25.01.2022 It is so hard to remain positive when my mouth so damn sore all the time. I had another biopsy on 29th July, (2-1/2 weeks ago) because another ulcer has appeared in my mouth just beyond my last lower molar. It still hasn’t healed and I am getting pain in my ear and throat as well. Results came back as negative to cancer, so why is the ulcer there? Is it possible that because I have had Radiotherapy in that area, the biopsy is taking longer to heal? Will it heal, or will I always have a sore mouth? Now it appears that another ulcer is appearing. It is so depressing. . . #tonguecancer #tonguecancersucks #oralcancer #mouthulcers #goldcoastartist

25.01.2022 Painting with my left hand.

23.01.2022 Another little one. Just playing with paint. The bandage on my broken arm is getting grubby with paint. I wore a glove today but still managed to get paint o...n it.. I can now paint with both hands. I am not feeling much pain in my elbow now. Finding the plaster a nuisance - but I have to leave it there. See more

20.01.2022 I want to learn to sketch as loosely as Lewis Noble. I am far too literal in the way I sketch. I love the way Lewis uses paint and tools to make interesting marks in his sketches. I bought this little sketching stool online. It has a bag attached underneath so carry your tools, As soon as I am allowed to drive after my surgery last week, I will be going out sketching. https://youtu.be/97zPNs-XJUk

17.01.2022 As it is Father’s Day today, I have reserected the first portrait that I ever painted which is of my father. He was in his eighties when I painted this from li...fe and was blind. He was visiting me in Deniliquin where I was living at the time and was sitting in my chair in front of the open fire, listening to one of his talking books when I painted this using pastels. I won numerous prizes with this portrait. My sister Bronwyn Chugg has this portrait hanging in her home In Warragul now. Dad lived until he was 92 and passed away when I was in year 2 at Uni studying for my Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1993. The first two house photos are of the house where he was born in Presteigne in Wales, and the last photo is his maternal grandparents home in Brampton Bryan in England. Dad’s family consisting of his parents and 10 brothers and sisters emigrated to Australia in 1911 when Dad was 10 years old (he was born in 1901). See more

16.01.2022 The bruise is gradually going away after nearly three weeks. Still have to wear this splint for another three weeks and a couple of days. Having an X-ray on Tuesday to make sure the break is healing nicely. After next week, I will be able to start exercising the elbow gently each day. At least now my wrist is free so that makes it a little easier. . . #brokenarm #brokenbones #brokenbonessuck #goldcoastartist

15.01.2022 I broke a bone in my elbow yesterday. I tripped over a hose whilst going into my studio with a container of water to start painting. I was very inspired after watching a @betty.krause.art YouTube video and eager to start painting. I had just put out some paint into my pallet and needed clean water, but tripped over a hose and landed very heavily into concrete on my right side. Ended up in Emergency at Hospital once again . It was so painful. I am right handed and won’t be able to use that hand for six weeks and not allowed to drive. I seem to be a walking disaster at the moment. I have never broken a bone before. . . #findyourjoy2020 #findyourjoycourse #goldcoastartist #abstractart #brokenbone #brokenelbow

14.01.2022 New work. Not sure if the coloured one is finished. My origin tension was to add lots of colour and texture, then sand back and add more, incorporating the textures. Should I do that, or leave as is? . . #findyourjoy2020 #acrylicpainting #abstractart #goldcoastartist

13.01.2022 Had a second tongue biopsy yesterday. My mouth, tongue and neck are so sore today, and my jaw. Can only have fluid meals. As most of you know, I battled tongue cancer last year. I now have another lesion on my tongue, right behind where my partial glossectomy was last year. An MRI scan last week didn’t show anything but my surgeon (and I) want to be sure it is not a return of cancer. I have had a root canal and tooth filed down in my last molar and it is right behind that. So it might be connected to that, but it could also be a return of cancer. Last year when I was first diagnosed, the MRI didn’t show anything and the biopsy revealed the cancer.

07.01.2022 On my way to Hospital just for the whole day. They are going to take out this damn catheter that I have had to wear since I was discharged last Wednesday. The...y will be monitoring my bladder all day to make sure it is working properly and not retaining urin. I will be so glad to be rid of the catheter. I feel sorry for anyone who has a permanent one. It is very restricting. But I did work out how to continue painting despite having to wear it. I had a total hysterectomy and bladder repair last Monday for those who didn’t know. See more

03.01.2022 By Russell Reichelt, Mudgeeraba Qld [embargoed until 26 January 2021] On receipt of an Australia Day Honour on 26 January 2021 I appreciate this honour very much and feel there are many others more deserving. On this Australia Day my heart and thanks go out to the thousands of Australians and migrants who are front line health workers, fire fighters, SES rescue workers and community volunteers helping all those suffering such awful stress. Many do this work every day with li...ttle recognition. I’ve had good fortune and privilege to work with many very talented and generous people and be frequently buoyed up by my loving family and friends, and parents who valued education and respect for others. This award inspires me to work harder to raise awareness of wonderful opportunities that stretch out ahead of us in building a safer, equitable and harmonious society that is in tune with our cultures and our natural surroundings. What is significant about your work on ocean science and climate change and the Reef? The ocean has special meaning for me. My earliest memories are of waves and the beach family, swimming, diving, fishing, boating. If I was an Australian indigenous person, I would definitely be with the ‘salt water’ people. I began my career as a tropical marine ecologist at Heron Island near Gladstone studying the corals and millions of other species that make up a healthy coral reef. Fairly theoretical work and I shifted focus to human impacts on the oceans starting with the Crown of Thorns starfish then onto the effects of coastal rivers loaded with extra sediments, fertilizer and chemicals. I also worked on how the practical management of commercial and recreational fisheries in Australia and in the Pacific to change practices to a sustainable use of the ocean. In the past 20 years my focus has been on the impacts of global warming on the ocean and on practical solutions to all of these issues. In 2005 I proposed a new type of scientific report on the Reef which became the Reef Outlook Report and a statutory obligation to be done by the Authority every five years. The key to the Outlook Report is that is not a static snapshot of current status but an See more

03.01.2022 I have decided to paint using water colours whilst my arm is in plaster as clean up is easier. Not so easy to clean up acrylic paint with one arm. I’d course,... they will be abstract as I doubt I could get the fine details that I used to get with my non dominant hand. These are two of the water colours that I did years ago when I used to live in Deniliquin. Will attempt some charcoal drawings too but again, unlimited get the fine details that I got with my right hand. It will be interesting to see how they turn out. See more
