16.01.2022 Today marks 150 years since the Queensland Derby was first held in Gayndah in 1868. The Derby was run on the final day of a 3 day meet, starting on July 7 and finishing on July 9. The event was well advertised, with bookmakers coming from as far as Melbourne and spectators coming from Port Curtis, Drayton, Ipswich and Nanango just to name a few. The race itself was labelled a tame affair, with 5 of the 9 nominations forfeiting prior to the event. Of the remaining 4, Goshawk, ...was injured on the first day of racing and unable to start. Escobedo neither looked or went like a racehorse, and the Hermit won without difficulty from The Rake, who though showed great dash of foot, was distressed nearly half a mile from home. The meet was a very social event, Publicans were able to purchase booths for 10 10s and Confectioners selling tea, cake and the like could purchase a booth for 2 2s. Gate fees were listed as 1s per person, 6d for a horse, 1s 6d for two wheels and 3s for four wheels. The photograph shown is the only one known from the Derby and gives a good insight into the festivities of the event. The Derby was held in Gayndah until 1871 when it then moved to Brisbane. See more

14.01.2022 Alan Watt has shared this photo from 1937 taken at the Royal Hotel in Gayndah, hoping someone may be able to identify the couple on the left. This is what he kn...ows: "My great uncle Bob Stewart either owned or co-owned the Royal Hotel in Gayndah. My Grandparents and my Dad, the boy in the picture visited Bob in 1937. They are pictured with Bob who is at the extreme right. The couple on the left, I don't know. My grandmother, Helen was Bob's sister. " See more
14.01.2022 Gayndah Museum is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019 and as usual we will be running displays over the Orange Festival weekend on the 4th and 5th of May. As well as the displays, we will also be serving devonshire tea at Ideraway Homestead - so if you are in town for the festival come down for a wander through the museum and enjoy a scone (or two)
14.01.2022 This weekend the Gayndah Museum hosted guests from the Queensland Steam & Vintage Machinery Society (Petrie) and the Maryborough City Whistle Stop. They, along with two of our volunteers, practiced on and observed our steam engines in action as they prepare to sit for their steam tickets!

09.01.2022 This weekend we were lucky enough to have some visitors from the Queensland Steam and Vintage Machinery Society to help us out around the museum. They did a great job cleaning and running our twin cylinder Marshall steam engine - thanks for all your hard work! We also pressure tested and fired the Keystone drilling rig for the first time since around 2008.
09.01.2022 If any one grew up in Gayndah in the late 1950’s 1960’s and 70’s they would remember Barry’s Bakery, this photo would be before Pat Barry bought the business
