25.01.2022 Client Spotlight This isn’t your normal before and after photo appreciation because sometimes photos just don’t do the journey justice but that doesn’t mean that @mynameis2v doesn’t deserve a massive shout out! I had the pleasure of chatting to Linda back in February after a good friend tagged her in one of my posts. Linda had already achieved some amazing results herself having lots the guts of 30kg and was hesitant to come on board as she had a holiday planned toward...s the end of July. After a quick chat she signed up and we got working together to help her reach her final goal! We started first by raising her calories as they had been running quite low for some time, she was reluctant at first but happily trusted the plan I had in place for her. We started off using machines over free weights to build up confidence and strength before we progressed onto some free weights. Over the past 10 months her efforts have been nothing short of perfect! She has grown from a shy gym goer to moving into the big boy weights and even showing the lads up on a few exercises . She managed her way through the covid lockdown doing every challenge I sent her way, she even asked if we could pause her fat loss pause to continue her strength goals , which ended with her smashing her 200kg leg press goal. If hasn’t been easy, far from it, like everybody she’s had a lot of challenges along the way, (including 2 broken fridges in a number of weeks ) but that has stopped her from achieving her goal. Her results and her commitment have been on a different level and it’s been a lm absolute joy having her onboard the team! Looking forward to finishing this fat loss pause (a loss of over 50kg) and pushing calories up to maintenance for awhile so can really starting enjoying the fruits of all her hard work! 25.01.2022 Let’s talk over extension! How far does one really need to go when pressing?? Photo 2 is typically what you see happen in most gyms, where the person try’s to get as deep as possible in the hope for extra gains. While this may be a very good technique for legs unfortunately it just doesn’t follow suit.... What one might not understand is for the most of us getting into this position while pressing is putting an increased strain across shoulder joint which may in turn be drastically increasing the risk of injuring! Photo 3 is where for the most of us our pressing should stop, with our arms parallel to the floor or many just a little deeper! This does not have only go for shoulder presses but also for chest work too. So is the risk worth it for the little extra but of muscle recruitment, for the most of us, most definitely not. Remember all your training should be done on a risk to reward basis! If you feel it’s to risky or you are feeling unwanted pain through your joints find a more suitable way or swap exercise out totally. 25.01.2022 How many people do you know around you that have tried and failed?? Probably many. How many people do you know that have tried a second time and failed? Probably a little less then the first. What about a third or a fourth attempt?? I’m sure the numbers are dwindling as we increase the attempts.... The world is full of people who can’t reach their goal because they have tried and failed and have pretty much given up! Trying and failing is part of life, you didn’t just stand up one day and strut around the kitchen, similar to you didn’t just hop in car and start cruising down the freeway, ( well at least I didn’t, I remember one of first times putting the car in reverse and nearly kangarooing through the garage door). Be the person who continues on their journey accepting failure as part of the journey, taking a lesson from every failure they came across. 22.01.2022 Its a simple concept, if you want something ensure your actions are in line with what it is you want. If its to lose weight, ensure you are in a deficit, not just Monday-Thursday and then yoloing the rest of the weekend! Yes its fine to bank calories for the weekend but that doesnt give you a green light to eat uncontrollably. ... If its to build muscle ensure you are progressively overloading each time you step into the gym! Muscle takes time and patience, you dont just show up and it grows, you need to work for every single gram. For me its jotting down my main goal each Sunday, followed by 3 things Im going to do to ensure it happens! 22.01.2022 A Very common mistake I see with people who are trying shoulder press is that they are putting unnecessary pressure through the shoulder joint and rotater cuff. If you press similar to the picture above on the left where you tend to fully open out your chest and tuck out your elbows try swapping it for the picture on the right where we have out elbows tucked in ever so slightly. This will reduce any due pressure or strain on the shoulder joint on and make the lift a lot more ...comfortable. 22.01.2022 The day I decided enough was enough. The day I decided things needed to change! I was stuck in a rut unhappy with just about everything in my life, my training was shit, I hated my job and i was beyond unhappy with how I looked and more importantly how I felt.... I knew things had to change and for that to happen I knew I needed help. I hired a coach & got some structure in my life. I fell in love with training all over again. It was the start of a new beginning. Instead of drinking on my time off I started educating myself on training and nutrition. I started breaking down exercises to gain a better understanding of how they worked. I ditched the chicken and broccoli life for a more balanced approach. I become obsessed with how I could improve which unfortunately alienated myself from many of my friends Would I change what I did? probably not. It took me to that level of extreme to finally understand this is what I wanted to do. From that moment on I knew thats want i wanted do to. I knew this could make me happy. Fast forward 3 years, Im currently in the best place Ive ever been, both mentally and physically. I get to help people on daily basis over come the same challenges I once fought. 18.01.2022 Are you unknowingly eating yourself out of a deficit?? For some very strange reason only known to themselves @myfitnesspal have this feature automatically switched on for most accounts. What does feature does is, it tracks any exercise you may do via your smart watch/phone and automatically picks a total random number of calories and adds it onto your daily limits therefore increasing what you see each time you log in to track something.... If your coach has given you a calorie/macro goal, more then likely they have already included exercise calories in your TDEE so there is no need to have this feature switched on. Although the IF zealots will have you believe that fasting for an ungodly amount of hours is the best way to lose weight, unfortunately its just not. 13.01.2022 We need to stop glorifying obesity as body positive. Yes you can be happy at any weight but unfortunately you cannot be healthy. Being overweight is the main driving of 3 of the biggest killers in the world today; stroke, heart attack and cardiovascular disease.... Having large deposits of visceral fat drastically increases your risk of type 2 diabetes which, unfortunately leads to these top 3 conditions! Type 2 diabetes which was a condition associated with age has now become rampant amongst kids and adolescents. Now this is a fat shaming post, im actually very much against them. I’ve come to learn that being obese isn’t just down to ones choices, they aren’t eating just because they want to. For most it’s a psychological issue, bedded deep down and for some it may even be in their genetic make up. We shouldn’t be glorifying obesity with with words like healthy because quite frankly they’re not. That’s not my opinion that scientific fact! How can we go from shunning size zero (which is on the other side of the unhealthy scale) to glorify the polar opposite? How was zero 0 unhealthy but a size 40 is?? We’re size zero models not happy?Why wasn’t their happiness considered when we demanded that companies stopped promoting their size?? We did it for health reason and to try not to encourage your kids to follow suit! Fitness can mean different things to different people and can come in all shapes and sizes. I for one am a firm believing in focusing on other aspects of training because when we focus on these our habits generally change and become more health focused, which in turn leads us to being at a more healthy weight range. Unfortunately for health, science doesn’t care about your feelings, it cares about your health markers and being obese unfortunately doesn’t make them a good read. 12.01.2022 Should you cut or bulk?? _ Its a question I often get asked and unfortunately the answer, like most, will be it total depends. Personally for me, the rule of thumb would be based around the visibility of your abs.... If you can see them, youre in a great position to start a bulking phase, if not its prob best to cut for a little while. Next week comes and theres a bank holiday in two weeks, youll start after that .... The bank holiday comes sure its a work function then. All of a sudden its 6 months later and youre even further away from your goal then you were at the start. There will never be a perfect time, never be that perfect moment, you will pick and choose events all year long to postpone that perfect time. Any reason will do to stop your from changing. Change is hard I get it, its hard stepping outside your comfort zone and into the unknown, so much can happen? You could try and fail, then what? It could very well come down to the type of study ( single vs meta analysis) or the person citing the study if they have a hidden agenda about the issue!... A perfect exactly of this would be in the slides above, a process known as cherry picking data to strengthen ones point without actually putting into context the sentence they cited. The Meta Analysis study will always come out of type as this is taking all the studies on a certain subject and seeing where lies the most evidence for results. 08.01.2022 Any of these look familiar? Unfortunately for a lot of us, we just seem to be on one big never ending diet, which in turn just leads us to binge, hate ourselves and diet some more. Not really anybodys idea of fun especially as we dont seem to be getting any results. Recently there has been some increasing evidence around actually taking a break from your diet for a number of weeks before recommencing.... The study itself looks at two diets based over a 30 week period with one being a continued diet and the other including diet breaks. What the study found is that the group that took the diet breaks actually lost more weight during the study and also kept the most weight off after the study had finished. 03.01.2022 Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face Well Christmas was that uppercut right to the face What I’d planned and what actually happened couldn’t have been more different.... Id pre planned meals (even order in some meal prep), planned on going the gym every other day and making sure I got my 10’000 steps in. What actually happened was, well not that I drank more in the past week then I prob have in the past year, ate chocolate for breakfast most mornings and when I wasn’t drinking or working pretty much laid on the couch watching Netflix . Am I happy with what happened not really, do I think I could have done better, of course. Can I change what happen, nope I can’t. Christmas is pretty much done and dusted, you may have killed it or you may have f*cked it, one thing is certain you can’t change it! You have a few options; You can continue like it’s still Christmas, feeling sorry for yourself thinking the world is against you and owes you something Or You can own it, accept it for what it is and move on. One of the common misconceptions of insulin is that when spiked it signals the body to stop burning fat and instead, absorb some of the fatty acids and glucose in the blood stream and turn them into more body fat. Because of this, the low carb zealots have jumped on the bandwagon that because carbs spike insulin, that they should be avoided at all cost. (Protein also has a similar spiking effect) and that the only true way to become lean is to follow... a low carb diet. Is the first statement true, yes 100%, insulin when spiked does indeed cause this to happen. But unfortunately what the low carb zealots fail to also understand is that even tho this process does happen, our body still abides by the laws of thermodynamics. Which means that overall energy balance through out the day will determine the amount of fat stored or indeed lost. When ever I ask why do you want to lose weight to my new clients, I always get the same generic response to look better Yes on the outside that may seem like a good enough reason but is it good enough to get you to the gym when you don’t want to? More then likely not!... To get to the real reason you want to change you more then likely need to dig a little deeper. Physiologist say you may need to ask yourself that question at least 5 times before you get to the real reason you want to change! You may start with wanting to look better but may end up as deep hating the way you feel or how you look! For me my why at the start was I wanted abs and after digging a little deeper I ended up with wanting to have self confidence.
