17.01.2022 To All Our Valued Clients & Followers; In light of the Covid-19 Pandemic enveloping our wonderful community, we have enacted our health and safety quarantine policy. 1. All visitors to GBS Equestrian must be by prior appointment only, and necessary in nature.... 2. All approved visitors will be required to stop at the front gate and walk through the ‘Virkon’ foot bath provided, wash hands thoroughly with disinfectant provided, put on a pair of gloves that have also been provided. 3. All owners who are dropping youngstock off to be started under saddle must be competent to unload and lead your youngster too a designated yard. Our Team will be unable to assist you due to social distancing laws in place, and not touching communal equipment. All gear is to be removed from said youngster and taken home with you. If you are unable to do the above, we recommend transporting your youngster with a knowledgeable equine logistics company that adheres too high cleanliness and hygiene practices and is a horse person. 4. Anybody who has travelled recently or is showing signs of being unwell, please do not enter our property. 5. For our clients who have youngsters being started under saddle now or in the future, our practices for bio security are of a high standard. All our equipment is soaked/sprayed in Virkon on a regular basis as a standard practice. 6. Clients picking up youngsters that have been started under saddle will receive a brief via email & phonecall on our handover bio security practices. 7. All lessons are suspended effective immediately. The above can change at any given moment. We are following all recommendations and guidelines as they become available. 12.01.2022 Let’s talk ‘stepping up’ The goal we are aiming to achieve with each and every youngster is a confident horse who understands we want them to stand still, calmly and confidently while we mount. The way we achieve this outcome is through our process we call ‘stepping up’. We are big believers in giving youngsters time to process each lesson. Stepping up is no different. In the first instance we start slowly bouncing on the balls of our feet on either side of the horse.... This progresses to holding the saddle and jumping up and down, slowly adding weight to the stirrup all the way through to standing in the stirrup and leaning over and being able to pat the horse on the neck and rump whilst they stand willingly and confidently. This is done on both sides of the horse How long does this process take? That depends entirely on the individual. On average we spend several days ‘stepping up’ on each youngster to achieve the standing in the stirrup and patting them down on the neck and rump. When that day comes, we sit in the saddle for the first time. This is an integral moment where their learning and confidence building in the long reins is transposed to under saddle. The first ride under saddle is focussed on getting them to step off in the walk confidently and carry a rider for the first time. We change direction in walk... so they can see us on both sides, then we call it a day. It also means that during a year like 2020 we understand the pressure that COVID-19 has applied to many of our friends, family and clients daily lives. ...
