16.01.2022 CALLING ALL MENTORS (note: we will be calling for Mentees soon... stay tuned) are you the kind of Beek who helps out your friends and neighbours with their hive? Do folks call you with their bee related questions? ... Is your gear and bee reference book always out on loan to your bee buddies? YOU MIGHT ACTUALLY ALREADY BE A BEEK MENTOR !! GCABS are preparing a mentor program to connect new beeks with the likes of you: the slightly more experienced, kind hearted and happy to chat folks who willingly answer Beek questions and share advice. Not sure if thats you? Ok.... but if you are or know someone who is a mentor to others, please let us know. Love, GCABSs training team.

11.01.2022 Happy World Bee Day! The main purpose of World Bee Day is to spread awareness of the significance of bees and other pollinators for our survival. Simply proclaiming World Bee Day does not do much for bees and other pollinators; the main work of safeguarding their existence still needs to be undertaken. World Bee Day is an excellent opportunity to put bees at the centre of the national conversation for a day and encourage actions that create more bee-friendly landscapes. Beeke...epers and nature conservationists are united in encouraging improved conditions for bees to build pollination security and to safeguard our food security. Join us in celebrating World Bee Day 20th May 2020 https://www.worldbeeday.org.au/ We look forward to sharing our monthly club meetings again with you soon.
11.01.2022 Our July, August and September classes were all sell outs. Our October course has only two places left, so if you would like to participate, get in quick!

09.01.2022 Earlier today QBA received approval to circulate information relating to the recent detection of Varroa jacobsoni/ Asian Honey bees in the Port of Townsville ar...ea. On the 16th and 23rd of April 2020, whilst routine surveillance work was being undertaken by the National Varroa Mite Eradication Program (currently underway in the Townsville region) a detection of Asian Honey bee wings was found in pellets from rainbow bee eater birds. On the 28th of April 2020 a nest of Asian Honey bees was detected in the vicinity of the Port of Townsville area. The nest contained 2,850 bees, no drones or drone comb. Varroa mites were present within the nest. The nest was destroyed and removed for testing. Subsequent testing was carried out by CSIRO and the Queensland Department of Agriculture with a determination made that this recent detection is a new incursion and not related to any other Asian Honey bees previously detected in Queensland. The testing conducted between the two laboratories has confirmed the presence of Varroa jacobsoni. The QBA will continue to liaise with all respective Departments and Agencies involved in the detection and the National Varroa Mite Eradication Program and will provide industry members with updates as they are made available. For beekeepers and members of the public this recent detection serves as a timely reminder to all, that Biosecurity is everyone's business. Should you detect or suspect and exotic pest in Queensland, please contact Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23 or alternatively contact the Exotic Plant Pest Hotline on 1800 084 881.
09.01.2022 This past weekend while packing down two hives for winter, unfortunately, we found one of our hives with American Foul Brood (AFB). GCABS mission is to provide information to members & members of the public in relation to the keeping of Honey Bees. Accordingly, this short post is what happened when we found AFB. After visualising a scattered brood, foul small and sunken cells, we tried to do a quick ropiness test but we still were not sure. We then cut out a sample, secured ...the hive and then dropped the sample at one of our committee members who had a home AFB test kit. These kits are handy to have as they are a quick and easy way to check. Unfortunately! We had a positive. We now have sent the sample to Biosecurity Queensland but due to the initial test, we decided to euthanise the hive immediately. This is a particularly really sad decision but a responsible decision as I have other hives on the apiary and wanted to isolate the risk as fast as possible. So as soon as night fell, I sealed up the hive and sadly measured a cup of petrol in the hive for a burn in the morning. The next morning, we dug a deep hole to capture the melted wax and honey and moved the hive for the burn. All the equipment including gloves, brush and tools were also included in the burn. This is necessary as AFB has highly persistent spores and highly contagious and there is no cure. We will further check the other hives in a few weeks and fingers crossed we have responded quickly, and no other hives are affected. Please make sure you are diligent in your inspection of pests and diseases. Please be informed. At GCABS we also hold annually information sessions on Pests and Diseases as well as articles in the Buzz Magazine.

03.01.2022 Update on State Borders - Friday 7 August Firstly - even though you cant see every postcode listed on the map, our area IS part of the border zone. Thats... the area across Qld and NSW where you can cross the border within for ANY purpose. Only postcode 4216 is on the image that Ive posted (straight from the website) but if you read the full health direction 4212, 4214 and 4215 are all included. So Queenslanders can travel anywhere within the NSW part of the zone with a border pass. You can now apply for the new border pass youll need for tomorrow here https://www.qld.gov.au//queensland-border-declaration-pass Again, you can only travel into NSW as far as the border zone covers So someone from Arundel cant drive to Coffs Harbour.
