19.01.2022 Monday 1 March - Sweet Thunder is a 13 piece jazz orchestra based on the Gold Coast.The band plays a mix of big band jazz arranged specifically for the lineup of three trumpets, three trombones, four saxes plus piano, bass and drums. While the band draws heavily on the Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn legacy they also play works by Benny Carter, Gerry Mulligan, Count Basie, Quincy Jones, John Clayton and others. Finalist for the National jazz awards, he has developed an online music school that has over 30000 subscribers and over 5 million lessons taken. 12.01.2022 John Morrison & Jacki Cooper Modern Jazz Saturday 11th January from 7 10pm Over the course of a decade, this musical duo have made their mark on the Australian jazz scene not only for their musical exploits, but also for their determination for all children in Australia to be exposed to music education. John and Jacki travel around Australia visiting schools and presenting their Make it Swing workshops. As well as visiting schools with established band and choir p...rograms, they also spend time in schools with little or no music program in the hopes that the schools will be inspired to make music part of the curriculum. Besides their educational adventures, John and Jacki are regular performers at festivals and jazz clubs around the country with their Sydney Jazz Band and with John’s Sydney Big Band, Swing City. Sharing a love of big band music, they started a big band festival, Big Band Blast in 2013 in Port Macquarie NSW. The weekend is held on the last weekend in May annually. 07.01.2022 Monday 17th Feb at 7pm. Andrea Szabo is a Gold Coast-based singer, songwriter and composer who’s been sharing with audiences around Australia for more than 20 years. Andrea’s professional singing career took flight after completing a Performing Arts degree at the University of Western Sydney. With her one-woman show, inspired by the great Mae West, she also gained acclaim as a traveling performer. On the road throughout the late 1990s, Andrea’s songbook repertoire took her ...to 5 star venues all over Australia. While discovering a love for jazz singing in the style of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah Washington Andrea was developing her three-octave range. Always an entertainer pushing creative boundaries and expanding her craft, Andrea spent the past decade performing variously as a cabaret artist and event host. Her stand-up comedy gives us her alter-ego, psychic, Ms Zandria Seesalot. With her amazing range and tonal quality, Andrea can and does sing anything from blues to ballads, from big show numbers to stirring soul, and from swinging jazz to classic. 06.01.2022 Monday 1st Feb 7pm. John Hoffman established himself as a world class trumpet player, performing with the likes of Glenn Miller, Buddy Rich, and Woody Herman before moving to Australia. He took up the position of sessional lecturer in Jazz Brass and Ensemble at the Conservatorium in 1993 and founded the Con Artists in 1996, remaining the band director until 2013. John’s seventeen year direction saw him mentoring countless students, arranging dozens of performances, and overse...eing various recordings. Tony Gould, head of music at the Victorian College of the Arts, described John as having the imagination, the creative force, and the extraordinary musical talent to bring it all together. He is a regular attraction at concert venues and festivals throughout Australia, Europe, Japan and New Zealand, and his dynamic and humorous show draws on many musical styles from The Classics, Jazz, Gypsy, Latin, Irish, the Blues and even a touch of Cowboy music. After meetin...g the French violinist Stephane Grappelli Ian swung his attention towards Jazz, and his fiery approach to the Devil’s Instrument became reminiscent of the music of the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. Luckily to us and for you we have been able to secure the following weekend in January. Sat 23rd January will be GALAPAGOS DUCK, Sun 24th the ANDREWS SISTERS TRIBUTE BAND and Mon 25th the amazing ESTAMPA....
