25.01.2022 In addition to being dedicated and caring health professionals who work in the CCU / Cardiothoracic Inpatient unit at Gold Coast University Hospital - GCUH all of these staff have something else in common. They are a part of the unit’s baby boom. This image of new mums, expectant mums and one very excited expectant dad was taken in July 2020 so the number of bubs now on the ‘outside’ has grown. The number of new expectant parents has also increased. In fact, over the past 12 ...months there has been 15 pregnancies in total among Nurse Unit Manager Sue Martin’s staff. Sue said there was a buzz of excitement across the 4th floor of B Block. "It’s such an exciting time for us all," she said. "As the mother of 3 teenage boys, I have been fortunate enough to have balanced family life with having a great career. "I believe in creating a workplace that is committed to doing the same, it’s about fostering the right balance for each individual family’s needs." Congratulations mums and dads. And who knows some of these bubs might be our future health professionals. See more

23.01.2022 Endorsed Enrolled nurse Hanna Szarmach doesn’t mind if you call her darling. For Hannah, the fact her colleagues and patients use such a term of endearment shows they are comfortable and trust her. That’s something she considers an important part of the care she offers in the respiratory unit at Gold Coast University Hospital. Hannah was born in Poland and emigrated to Australia from New Zealand in 2001. Over the past two decades, Hannah has worked in a number of health roles..., including in aged care and mental health, and has continued to study and develop her nursing skills. She started working with Gold Coast Health in 2003 as an assistant in nursing. Hannah is a member of the respiratory unit’s Multicultural Initiative Project which champions the diversity of our workforce and patients. The project was developed to help patients who speak different languages so nursing staff can better understand these patients and their cultures and give them the best care with respect for their cultural needs, Hannah says. I have travelled significantly over the years with a focus on exploring Europe and visiting my home country where I still have many friends and family. I also maintain tie with Polish community on the Gold Coast. My patients are often diverse and have different multicultural backgrounds which puts me in a strong position to help and care for them. Caring for my patients is very important to me and I take great pride in this and believe my kindness and empathy helps me build strong trusting relationships which results in patients leaving unit having had a positive experience in my care.
21.01.2022 Gold Coast University Hospital - GCUH Medical Imaging Department nurses (left to right) Dana Fox, Emma Egan and Rebecca Buyn are among staff who have helped young people in hotel quarantine beat the boredom. 20.01.2022 Good oral hygiene is important at all stages of your life, but when you have braces it can stop your teeth from getting stained, protect the health of your gums and stop you from having bad breath. Whenever possible, you should always try to brush your teeth after every meal. If you can’t, then rinsing your mouth with water or mouth wash can help to remove plaque and food build up until you’re able to get to your tooth brush. #DentalHealth

18.01.2022 Gold Coast Health teams in Human Resources Services and Operational Services have joined forces to deliver smiles to families affected by domestic violence. Learning and Development Support Officer Kara Naylor and Operational Services Officer Ross Naylor delivered a boot load of gifts to RizeUp Australia to help bring some deserving families cheer this festive season. We received so many great gifts, including lots of lovely ladies’ toiletries, water pistols, bubbles and ...even jewellery," Kara said. Ross and I felt so honoured to be delivering these gifts on behalf of our kind-hearted workforce, and RizeUp were extremely grateful for the gifts." RizeUp raises awareness of family and domestic violence by providing practical support for the families affected, giving them hope and empowerment to move onto a life free from violence. The Christmas donation drive, organised by Director Support Officer Karlie Stanaway of Organisational Capability, is an annual movement focused on the true meaning of Christmas giving. I love this time of year; running our donations drive and seeing how grateful the Charity organisers are for the generosity," Karlie said. It also brings our HRS team together as everyone is so keen to donate. It’s a small part we can play in making someone’s day." See more

15.01.2022 A young mother diagnosed with cancer a few months ago knows too well the importance of Blood Awareness Week from 9-13 November. Georgi Potter said receiving donor blood helped her continue to enjoy everyday things that she wouldn’t otherwise be able to do. Between 300 and 400 patients receive red blood cell transfusions at Gold Coast Health each month. Georgi was working as a baker, when she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in June. Since then, she has lived on the... Gold Coast to receive chemotherapy at Gold Coast University Hospital while awaiting a stem cell transplant this month in Brisbane. She has received 18 units of red blood cells and 13 units of platelets in the past five months. I really want to say thank you to the blood donors for their generosity. It’s truly an amazing thing to do for someone, she said. I’ll always be grateful to the amazing donors out there who are saving lives. Georgi and her husband Kyle have a son, Chayce, age three. GCH uses an average of 800 red blood cell units each month. The blood comes from volunteer donors through the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood donor centres. Georgi is pictured here with Gold Coast Health's Kayalia. See more

15.01.2022 Southport Health Precinct café isn't just serving coffee and meals, its also changing lives. Gold Coast Health Board Chair Ian Langdon recently handed over the keys to Active Opportunities general manager Amelia Gow and her team which will run the The newly renamed Opportunities Café. Active Opportunities is a not-for-profit organisation which provides employment and pre-employment training and support to people with disabilities and other barriers to employment. I thought ...if only we could have a café here, in our facility, providing an opportunity to people who haven’t had an opportunity for whatever reason, disability, lack of education, a lack of language, Mr Langdon said. In January 2021, Active Opportunities will start its first Southport Health Precinct hospitality program. In the program, 10 participants daily will run the café. The participants will learn front of house or back of house skills over the course of four months. Amelia says the program will change the face diversity and acceptance and kindness on the Gold Coast. We really want people who think they didn’t have chance to know they can walk in here and they have got a group of people who believe in them and we are going to give them the skills and the confidence to get a job elsewhere, Amelia said. 13.01.2022 A rapidly growing COVID-19 cluster in the north of Adelaide has prompted new safety measures for travellers from South Australia. Queensland borders will close to local government areas in the city of Adelaide from 11.59pm tonight. People who travel into Queensland from Adelaide after this time must complete 14 days of hotel quarantine at their own expense. This restriction will apply to anyone who has been in the city since Monday 9 November 2020.... Anyone currently in Queensland who’s been to Adelaide in the past seven days has been asked to immediately get tested and self-quarantine, even if they don't have symptoms.

12.01.2022 It’s been a busy week of orientation for 158 newly qualified nurses who are about to start their placements at our hospitals. We had the pleasure of chatting to some of them to hear a little about their individual journeys. You can read some of what Cushla, Kiun, Yasamin and Jack had to say in the comments section of their photos. #goldcoast #health #nursing
12.01.2022 Gold Coast University Hospital emergency doctor Hayley Frieslich is one of 251 known cases of Ross River Virus on the Gold Coast this year. Dr Frieslich hopes sharing her experience will help to raise awareness about the virus and its debilitating effects. After developing headaches, sore muscles and sore joints early last month, Hayley went to see her GP. After two weeks of just feeling really lousy, I started to have some quite high temperatures, she said. Blood tests or...dered by her GP showed Hayley had Ross River fever. She's urging Gold Coasters to be vigilant about avoiding being bitten by mosquitoes. There is no treatment for this, so the best way to treat it is to prevent getting it, Hayley said. Be aware in those higher times of getting bitten, which is dawn and dusk, and use repellents, wear your long-sleeve clothing and think about your children as well. See more
12.01.2022 Today is World Prematurity Day and to raise awareness of this special day and life’s little treasures, Gold Coast University Hospital has turned purple. Our Newborn Care Unit has had 1113 admissions so far this year of which 390 babies were born prematurely and 21 were born extremely prematurely (before 28 weeks). Our smallest baby admitted weighed 520g and we’ve cared for 20 babies weighing less than 1000g the same weight as a litre of milk. Twins Sienna and Jessie were bo...rn earlier this month at 31 weeks, surprising mum Kylie. I feel pretty special because they are little miracle babies and are doing so well. I now appreciate what my friends have gone through and it’s good to hear other people’s stories and share my own. Clinical Nurse Consultant Julie Dunsmuir says it’s important the Gold Coast community knows the service is here for parents and their babies if they need us. I really enjoy watching the babies grow and seeing them go home and also watching the parents progress from being scared and frightened of ‘what’s happening to me?’ to feeling confident in going home and knowing that we play a major part in making this happen. 10.01.2022 Omana Sibu has spent the past 11 years caring for patients in Gold Coast Health’s respiratory ward. Originally from the southern Indian state of Kerala, the clinical nurse began her career in Mumbai, India, more than two decades ago. She then worked in the UK before eventually calling the Gold Coast home. My multicultural background has enabled me to understand emotional pain patients from different backgrounds go through, Omana says. Additionally, through my background, I... have helped patients communicate their needs which has helped me significantly in this role. Omana says she finds leading her team through complex situations to get positive outcomes for patients and their families one of the most rewarding parts of her job. It’s rewarding to I see patients I have cared for completely healed and when junior nurses and colleagues learn something new from my guidance, she said. Another thing that makes me happy is when patients express their gratitude for caring and helping them. Omana is a member of the Multicultural Initiative Project which champions multiculturalism in the respiratory unit and wider Gold Coast Health. The project was developed to embrace the cultural diversity of our workforce and patients and help raise awareness and improve communication and patient experience. She is also the president of the Gold Coast's Malayalee (people of Kerala) Cultural Association, consisting of about 300 families. Through the community, she has organised multiple blood donations alongside her work colleagues. #Multicultural #Society #Nurses #HealthHeroes See more

07.01.2022 Sometimes I wonder when my own time comes to die, whether they’ll all be there waiting for me. Holding that vigil like I have for them. It’s a lovely wish, and one that I hope comes true. Each one was so much more than patient to me, the time we spend on this ward is intensely intimate and meaningful." These beautiful words were shared by Gold Coast Health's Jane McNamara with Ann Wason Moore - Journalist about her work with people in the Robina Hospital Palliative Care Unit. As the advanced recreational officer at the unit, Jane works with a range of staff to create memories for patients and their families. https://www.news.com.au///dd90ec6b75ec448c26709afcb6fb5591
04.01.2022 Welcome to the world, baby August! August was born today at Gold Coast University Hospital, weighing 8.6 lbs or just over 3.9kg. He is baby number two for his proud parents, who can't wait to take him home and introduce him to his two-year-old big brother. We think he couldn't look any sweeter in his knitted hat!
03.01.2022 Colouring in has gained widespread interest throughout the world in recent years with many people returning to the much-loved childhood activity to reduce stress and anxiety. At Gold Coast Health, one creative staff member created this custom colouring in image so health workers and their families could practice this form of mindfulness throughout this difficult year. Jaime Hilton has been creating art since she was a child and said she found it heart-warming that people wanted to colour in something she created. Check out these interpretations by Registered Nurse Indu Sukumaran, scientist Belinda McAuliffe and Clinical Nurse Sally Miller. What mindfulness activities do you most enjoy?
03.01.2022 Around 50 emergency department and trauma unit nursing and medical staff participated in a joing HAZMAT drill with the QFES this week. 03.01.2022 ArtBeat People’s Choice Award Winner announced ... Leigh-Ellen Roundhill has won the ArtBeat People’s Choice Award for her entry ‘Seeking the Connection’ out of the 60 artworks on display for this year’s Art Exhibition. Over 200 people voted over the two weeks that the art was on display in celebration of Queensland Mental Health Week. Describing her motivation toward creating the piece, Leigh-Ellen said My inspiration was based around COVID-19 and border closures. But also ...how mankind has and is still prevented to connect on many levels! She said the work aimed to convey the difficulty in connecting with one's own mind and experiences. Creative Health Project Officer Maddie Bridgland said that Leigh-Ellen’s art has been capturing people’s attention ever since she started exhibiting her work in our ArtBeat exhibitions in 2014. Leigh-Ellen’s art often conveys deep messages, ones which the public connect with. She now has quite a following of people recognising her particular style and technique on display each year. A big thank you to all those who voted and purchased artwork in this year’s exhibition. See more
