25.01.2022 The First Programmer. If you were to ask the average person When was the first computer program written? you’ll likely get a range of responses. Most guesses would probably range from the 1940s up to the 1960s.... Whilst the first high-level programming language, Fortran, was created in 1957 the first program was published in September 1843. That isn’t a typo. It’s an astounding thought; the first computer program was published nearly a whole century before Alan Turing enabled decrypting Enigma messages via an early computer. Although there is some controversy regarding this, it is widely regarded that the author of the program was Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron (the famous poet). She spent 1842 and 1843 working on a translation of a scientific paper and added numerous notes to it. One of these, Note G, contains many terms modern programmers would be very familiar with; data, variable, result. Amazing stuff. Equally amazing is that relatively few have heard of her. What did the program do? Not Hello world (most programming language tutorials start with an example that displays Hello world); Lovelace’s program computed Bernoulli numbers. Impressive indeed for the first published program! Today we not only celebrate Ada Lovelace, a significant contributor to the modern age, we also celebrate all women in STEM. Happy Ada Lovelace day! 21.01.2022 Microsoft released their latest update for Windows 10 earlier this week. There are a couple of potential issues that we feel you should be aware of. Firstly, some users are reporting that the contents of their documents folder are being deleted during the update. Hopefully, everyone backs up their files so this should be an inconvenience if it occurs. However, it might pay to exercise caution and ensure your are fully backed up before commencing the update.... Secondly, Microsoft have determined that there is an issue causing excessive processor usage and reduced battery life on machines running Skylake or later processors (2015 and later). The cause appears to be Intel's Graphics Driver. As a result, they are blocking the update on machines that have an older version of it installed. You can obtain the correct version from this link: https://www.intel.com//art/000030792/graphics-drivers.html Let us know if you have encountered any issues with this update.

Besides Adam and our great audience, we would like to thank the GC Hub for hosting our event, and The Shed for the fabulous food. We would love to hear your feedback, what was the biggest take home message for you? ... But we are also keen to hear what subjects you would like to hear more about and what your IT or tech pain points are that we can help you with. Did you miss this first event? Make sure you keep an eye out for future events as we are working on more inspiring talks in the near future!

17.01.2022 The first programmer, Ada Lovelace. The Analytical Engine could be made to calculate "any indefinite function of any degree of generality and complexity" - Ada Lovelace. (The foundations of computing and the information technology age, 2007, p. 47 and 48). In a famous collaboration, the mathematician Augusta Ada, the Countess of Lovelace and daughter of the poet Lord Byron, became actively involved in the development of Babbage's programming language, and produced extensive notes on the operation of the engine. For this reason, Ada is often referred to as the first computer programmer, although this term more properly belongs to Babbage himself (2007).
