19.01.2022 The Singapore Ocean Cup will challenge you like never before! Gold Coast waters are a great training ground for Singapore, but the atmosphere created by the local clubs at this event rivals anything you will see in Hawaii or Tahiti. Competitive teams are from all around the world, not just based in Singapore, but actually flying in. And the word is getting out ... ... So start making plans. Get your teams together and map out your training. This is one race you'll make an annual event on your calendar!
18.01.2022 The 2019 Gold Coast Cup is on tomorrow. Come down to Kirra to see the race start at 0830 .... maybe before heading over to the Cooly Rocks On event. Then join the crews at the finish line at the Southport Spit for a cold drink and hamburger .... sounds like an awesome day out to me!
18.01.2022 Great explanation from Vesna
18.01.2022 Both Surf Life Saving and Outrigging (as sports) are experiencing similar environments at the moment. Declining numbers, and changes that not everyone agrees with. Things change, for sure. But do you need to add other activities to attract a different crowd, or build on the crowd you have? SUP has certainly taken many outrigger and surf life saving competitors as the 'new up coming' sport. Why not hold a series independent, under the SLSA banner instead of incorporating it in...to the existing competition? Ski's, SUPs, Outriggers ... these are all ocean going sports that with marketing dollars could be built up to have its own series - separate to the existing Nutrigrain series! Just my 2c
17.01.2022 Swells here ... time for a downwind?
16.01.2022 Here's a great race that should really test your skills. Coffee Harbour might be a few hours down the road, but it usually provides some great conditions. Make the effort and have a crack at this one. You won't be disappointed!
16.01.2022 Gold coast Outrigger Canoe Club held the Wavebreaker Challenge on the weekend. Over 60 canoes and skis! Here's a minute where I had a couple of little runs
15.01.2022 A must do event on your calendar!
15.01.2022 Oh to have this sort of downwind swell on the Gold Coast! We do, but not as clean and accessible as Oahu. For GC paddlers, sing out if you're ever doing a downwind. The more the merrier!
14.01.2022 Looking for some fun and cross training during the off season? This will be a cracker of an event!
13.01.2022 Lets hope it's ready in time for summer!
13.01.2022 Changeover v's Iron Race Tell us what you think! Over the last few years, Northcliffe OCC has held the Gold Coast Cup as a Changeover or Iron race. For a co...uple of these, it has been integrated with both events. We would like to know what your preference is. So please fill in the poll below and let us know. And tag as many paddlers as you know so we can get a good perspective across different levels of skill and experience. Even paddlers who are no longer on the water. There are a couple of factors that determine what we can/can't do. The things we need to consider with this event include; - Maritime Safety Queensland and Gold Coast Waterways (they are getting tougher on the regulations of what we can do) - Crews wanting to train for international events such as Molokai, World Distance, Queen Lili. (These don't make up large numbers) - SQZone calendar versus seasonal conditions. - Our opinion is paddlers don't like changes in winter. And post-Nationals, there are fewer paddlers. - April/September have historically been the periods Changeover races have been held (warmer water, favourable conditions for downwind) - Now days, there are fewer crews able to field a Change crew - Expense of hiring support vessels suitable (we've had IRB's and tinnies in the past - but can't do that anymore) - Iron distance is a long way if you haven't trained for it. Especially if conditions pick up or for novice crews. - Expense of holding multiple races without getting the numbers to cover cost (Gold Coast Cup has run at a loss for 3 out of the last 5 years). Sorry ... we can only provide 2 options, so if you have an alternative, such as integrated Change/Iron, please advise in comments
13.01.2022 Need to find a new start point with the Moondarewa Spit closed for a few months. Hopefully by summer we'll have a new Spit ... coffee shops maybe ?
11.01.2022 Queensland paddlers beware....
10.01.2022 The race season has started for South Queensland. This local event will be great practice. Sign on up!
10.01.2022 Southerly wind is up on the Coast .... good for a solid downwind. Not quite the conditions of this years Kaiwi Solo which finished earlier today. Nice runs there ...
10.01.2022 I don't have juniors or children to coach, but I think this article says a lot about sports here in Australia as well. Surf Life Saving Australia and Outrigging are going through this. While juniors in our sports are key component to building the future, they're not the only thing we need to focus on. These points also relate to Opens, Masters and Senior Masters. Make the environment too controlled or stringent, and people get tired with it!... http://newsportfuture.com/the-teenage-tumble/

05.01.2022 I love this race. Save the date, and get your team together. You won’t be disappointed!
04.01.2022 Ok it’s time for a bit of a rant. Any of my friends who have ever been associated with surf life saving in the past, are involved now or intend to introduce the...ir kids to the sport in the future may find it worth reading on. A couple of months ago SLSA met with the elite athletes (from the professional Surf Ironman series) and clubs and made an announcement. Basically they said that the 2019/2020 series was going to be a different sport with 6 races. It was to be called Iron X. The Surf Ironman disciplines were going to have several other different new ones added to them. These new disciplines included SUP (stand up paddleboarding), rope climbing, monkey bar swinging and tyre flipping amongst others. Racing was from now on going to be like Ninja Warrior or Wipeout or whatever. Of course this announcement was immediately met with stunned disbelief and massive opposition. Athletes and clubs strongly voiced their opposition and disgust at two meetings. A document was prepared and signed by athletes outlining in great detail the absolute ridiculousness of the proposal and presenting all the issues such as pathways, junior’s expectations, coaching, tradition, expense, safety etc. But SLSA pushed on regardless. They presented another proposition that there be a 5 race elite traditional Surf Ironman series and a stand alone Iron X race at the completion of the 5 race series. And this is where it gets tricky (read sneaky). Whilst unhappy to lose a genuine Surf Ironman race and funding to a circus-like gimmick race, it appears the athletes were relieved that at least they would have a shortened 5 race series in the sport they love and have dedicated their lives to. And then SLSA announced the funding for the series.1st place in one of the traditional Surf Ironman races would be $2 500 and in Iron X 1st place would be $25 000! (yes that is an extra 0!). So $7000 more for a 36 minute novelty event than for winning Coolangatta Gold. They have thrown $100 000 at the single day of Iron X, and scheduled it for the Australia Day long weekend in January in Mooloolaba. Why have they done this? SLSA have made no secret that they intend the Iron X format to take over the traditional professional Surf Ironman series. (They tried implementing this at the first meeting.) They have now stated they will monitor the success of the Iron X race against the other races. Well I lived in Mooloolaba and guarantee they will have thousands of people on the beach that day, not because of any interest in Iron X, but because Mooloolaba beach has thousands on it in the January long weekend regardless of what is happening! And to throw $100 000 at the day, money potentially taken from the traditional series, will ensure that SOMEONE races. Though I believe it would would be an eclectic bunch of racers not necessarily with surf lifesaving backgrounds (Why would SLSA support that?) It also places pressure on the semi professional athletes who need the money. Hell, the money is appealing to me, I’d like to race! I can paddle a SUP. I could pretend that the crowd on the beach was there to watch me. I could even end up on the podium if enough athletes fell from the monkey bars and broke both their arms. So what is the measure of success? My sons started Nippers because they wanted to emulate their heroes from the Surf Ironman Series. That’s why they first set foot in a surf club. They then became members of a great community, they loved racing and dreamed of being elite ironmen and learned incredibly important lifesaving skills and the ability to look out for others. They made lifelong friends, became better people, learned to be part of a healthy lifestyle and chased their dreams. They got so much more out of the surf club life than being ironmen, but make no mistake, their initial motivation was a dream of one day being a Eckstein, Hurst or Holmes. Now they put back into that community. They loved and respected the tradition, still do, and so do I. I have been watching ironman racing for decades. Sure, the elite athletes maybe don’t have quite the profile as they did in the 90’s right now, but they are doing ok! The depth of athletes and quality of racing is unbelievably high, and seems to get better every year. They are the fittest athletes on the planet and fantastic role models. I see them at their clubs and the effect they have on the nippers is just as great as it ever was. Nipper numbers at clubs are extremely healthy. All these things contribute majorly to the health, and wealth, of SLSA. So I’d argue that the elite Surf Ironman series has actually been very successful. This is despite a couple of decades of financial and promotional neglect from SLSA. Things are not perfect, but blowing up the sport and replacing it with a circus like concept with no pathway, tradition or interest is ludicrous. For people who are interested to see what’s playing out, I’d recommend having a look at all the articles online in the Gold Coast Bulletin (might have to subscribe!) or their Facebook or on 9 News Gold Coast Facebook. There is a huge groundswell of opposition against what SLSA is trying to implement and reports of SLSA pressuring athletes into racing Iron X. Have a bit of a look about, dig up the facts and how this situation has evolved and who is behind it. I have, and am left shaking my head. SLSA have got this one horribly wrong.
04.01.2022 Here’s some great paddling videos!
