23.01.2022 GOLD COAST FISHING REPORT 26/27th DECEMBER 2020. GOLD COAST OFFSHORE ... Finally Holiday time for most, and this year with that, comes some decent weather. This... Sunday, Monday and Wednesday are definitely the pick days at the moment on the forecasts. We will give you another short updated fishing report again midweek this week, but for now this is what’s been happening this past week. Palm Beach has seen both Spanish and spotted Mackerel being caught. Even though the water is still green from the flood run off, the Mackerel are happy and hungry in it. It would also be worth trying at Mermaid reef and off Southport over this coming week leading up to the full moon. Trolling WA Pilchards on slow trolled mackerel rigs has been doing the damage. If you want fish cubed pillys with no weight whilst at anchor and with heaps of diced up Pilchards as burley, you might get a decent feed of spotted mackerel. If there are any explosions of bait and birds on the surface, cast 20-50gram metals into the schools of fish and retrieve them quickly back to your boat, generating a hook up and a blistering run normally. Remember, it’s early days for our Mackerel season but it has started ( try trolling hard body lures on the Diamond reef area off Southport as well ). Snapper have also been on the chew as we said last week, in on the 24fathom reefs. Although the size is not massive, with lots of fish in that 35-50cm bracket, the qty’s are good. There have also been a few Black Marlin in and around the 40-50mtrs depth off the Seaway, even though the water colour is not good, they are there in and amongst it. Heaps and heaps and heaps of sharks out along the 18 and 24 fathom reefs, if you want to go out and have some fun. Out on the 36fathom reefs, there have been good catches of small to medium sized Dolphinfish around the fads and best methods of capture has been whilst trolling skirts. The water here is clearer and Black Marlin are also on the chew across the 36 fathom reefs. Some quality sized Snapper on the 36 fathom reefs east of the Seaway. The 50 fathom reefs is where the water is clear and the action is happening. The Dolphinfish out there at the moment are of solid size with an average 1mtr plus in size. Big talk this week is that the Marlin are showing up everywhere. Just as we can see in the photos below with Rossi’s boat Lucky Strike Charters catching 6 from 8 Marlin just a couple of days ago. Yesterday Spot X was going off with boats hooking up on little Blacks whilst trolling skirts and Marlin going crazy on live baits as well. As for the bottom fishing out there, expect to catch the usual Snapper, Pearl Perch and Kingfish. So if you want to stretch your arms on a Kingie or two, get out your slow pitch or fast jigging outfits, because the current has dropped a couple of knots from its usual 4 knots at this time of the year, making jigging easier at the moment until that current starts to pick up again later next week. Out wider the Blue Marlin are back on the chew as are Dolphinfish, Spearfish, Wahoo and still..Yellowfin Tuna. Fish around Riv Grounds, try wide of Jim’s Mountain and at the Tweed Canyons. Spanner Crabs are on at the moment, try around 48-52mtrs deep east of Main Beach to Q1. JUMPINPIN AND NORTHERN BROADWATER... It’s been another week of Mud Crabs coming in from all around the Jumpinpin and western side of the Pin area. Try in the Pimpama River, Logan River and any small creeks that run off the main channels up into the mangrove islands throughout the Jumpinpin area. With the bigger full moon tides later this week, you should be able to get into most creeks with a small boat, to set your crab pots overnight. Whiting are still biting well especially around the northern end of South Stradebroke island. Rossi from Lucky Strike Charters has been getting his clients heaps of quality sized Whiting this past week as seen in the pictures below. There have been some decent size Jew caught in the deeper water at the mouth of Swan Bay, but sharks are a problem there at the moment. Plenty of Bream around Kalinga Bank and the south east side of Crusoe Island. Try for Sand crabs throughout Tipplers Channel and further north on the eastern side of Russell Island. BROADWATER AND BEACHES The Seaway is definitely the happening place at the moment. With solid sized Mangrove Jack’s and Jewfish being caught on livebaits and Trevally smacking soft plastics and soft vibes. With the moon coming up later this next week, expect the fishing to even get better. As we spoke about last week, the amount of Jack’s being caught in this horrid dirty water at the moment is amazing and still continues. Whether you are fishing in the Coomera river between Paradise Point and the Highway Bridge at Coomera, in the Nerang River between the Railway Bridge to Monaco street Bridges in the east or around the canals of Broadbeach and Runaway Bay... it’s been good and some of the quality in the Jack’s is very good. Live baits, hard body lures ( surface and diving ) and soft plastics are all working well. There have been a few Cod and the odd Barramundi caught as bycatch as well. Whiting are still biting throughout the Nerang River, try around Carrara to Bundal during the day and around the old council chambers to Budds Beach at night. Whiting are also biting well around Wavebreak island as seen in the catch’s of Brad Smiths charters, again this past week. Some good sized Whiting off the foreshores early morning at first light around Labrador, Runaway Bay, Paradise Point and in the Broadwater near the rock walk of the Seaway. Try in the surf for Whiting and Dart along the Spit, using beach worms for bait. A few Sand Crabs around both sides of Sovereign Island and Ephrim Island. Mud crabs have been good up in any of the small deeper creeks off the Coomera river, Coombabah Creek and islands between Paradise point and the Jumpinpin. SOUTHERN GOLD COAST AND BEACHES. The water is slowly clearing, so try for Whiting, Dart and Bream off the surf beaches. Look fir a deep hole or banks that run into a deep hole for the whiting. Plenty of Mud Crabs throughout all of the southern Rivers after the recent rain. Try in the small creeks that run off the Tweed and Brunswick rivers and Tallebudgera and Currumbin Creeks. If you want to have a fish with the kids, maybe worth a try off any of the Jettys along the Tweed river or along the beaches in the creeks early morning on the high tide and fish very lightly weighted rigs for Bream and use worms or Yabbies for Whiting. Definitely worth a try for Mangrove Jack’s in the deeper rock holes of the rivers and creeks, and around bridges and casting along pontoons, especially late afternoon if it’s humid. FRESHWATER FISHING... Great to see the Bass are still biting in the Hinze Dam, plenty of fished schooled up on timber and points. Use soft vibes, micro jigs 20-30grams andy soft plastics worked slowly. Try in Maroon and Sommerset Dams for Redclaw, but keep an eye on on your pots. WHATS ON!! 20.01.2022 GOLD COAST FISHING REPORT 12/13th December 2020 GOLD COAST OFFSHORE ... Well we can definitely say that the Black Marlin have started, again this week they were... caught whilst trolling skirted lures, from last report on Thursday just gone. From east of Pt.Lookout to The Nine Mile reef at Tweed Heads and in between, many were hooked up or caught. Add to this a massive southerly blow that’s about to hit us , pushing in super clean warm water and yep, it’s going to be WHAM BAM fish on!! when we all get back out there hopefully later next week. Although the water has been cold and green in close this past week, the Dolphinfish still continued to smack skirted lures whilst trolling for Marlin. And yep those mega Yellowfin are still out there but they were quiet to take any lures this past week. You need to be out in 500mtrs to 2000 mtrs deep, look for the birds and start trolling a couple of deep divers in close and some skirted lures out wide from the boat. Blue Marlin should be on the bite after this big blow, which will also help to slow down the raging east coast current that has been smacking us this past month. The Blues have been hitting on 10-15 inch skirted lures at the moment, around Riv grounds to Jim’s Mountain and north to the Pt.Lookout Canyons. Snapper were again on the chew in on the close reefs this past week ( maybe due to the sudden drop in water temp to 21C in on the close reefs and the 36 fathom reefs). The current has been smashing it out wide on the 50’s this week but the Kingies are still hot on jigs at the moment. Don’t forget that Spanner Crabs will be back on the menu list from 1am this Wednesday morning 16th December, after a 6 week closure. I’ll post up on our You Tube page how to catch them again . My tips of the week for offshore fishing for this next 7 days are ...... * Don’t risk going offshore until the wind and swell drops and hopefully this will happen sometime later in the next week... * Get your trolling gear ready over this crappy weekend, because the Marlin, Dollies and maybe even Spanish Mackerel will be on the chew after the weather settles. * Get your Spanner Crab Pots ready for later next week, nobody has touched the Spanner Crabs for the past 6 weeks and they should be thick out there, but remember to tie a brick to each pot and attach at least 2 to 3 floats positioned a mtr between each float to your pot rope( to battle the current). * Once the wind and swell drops, try float lining or live baiting in on the close reefs for big Snapper after this big wind blow. JUMPINPIN AND NORTHERN BROADWATER... Probably a good time to prepare your Mud Crab pots over this next few days. With good rain expected , this is what we have been waiting for to bring the Mud crabs on and the prawns out of the creeks. Alrhough the weather is about to get ugly it has been good fishing this past week around the Jumpinpin area again for Whiting and Flathead. The Whiting are coming out from around Gold Bank’s eastern edges, the bays and main channel at the northern end of South Straddie. The average size has been around that 24- 30cm at the moment. Other areas to try are the western side of Kalinga Bank in the narrow channel, the banks heading up towards Jacobs Well from the east and in the Pimpama River. Yabbies and either Blood or Beach Worms are definitely the best baits. For Flathead around the Pin, cast soft plastics over the edges of the weedy banks and in the shallows over and around the weed patches. Try the banks opposite the Bedroom, Tipplers and towards Jacobs Well. Soft plastics on lighter 1/6 to 1/4oz are the go when the tide is either near low or high with not much run in it, focus on using 1/2oz when fishing the faster running water in the deeper channels and sand bank edges where the current is flowing fast. Try also trolling around Pandanus Island and the banks opposite the old Bedroom and around the flats opposite Tipplers on the high tide. Also try casting soft plastics around the northern entrance of Wally’s Gutter. All these areas continue to work well, and with high tide in the mornings and run out tide bite this next week should be good. Only thing that will stuff it is, if we have too much rain added to the large morning high tides, the run out will be dirty and too fast to fish in many areas. So maybe concentrate your the creeks or out of the wind. Try for Sand Crabs throughout Tipplers Channel and around the Slipping Sands area, overnight is best. Banana Prawns already starting to be caught in the Logan River, this weekends heavy rain should see a start to our Prawning season. BROADWATER AND BEACHES - [ ] Again, the big increase in captures this past week have been Mangrove Jacks. From fishing with either live baits or flesh fillets around the estuaries, canals, bridges, deep holes and rock bars.... to casting soft plastics and deep divers along the pontoons and pylons, it has all been producing some quality sized Jacks. After a bit of rain this weekend expect the Jewies, Mangrove Jacks and Snapper to be on the bite in the Seaway. Be careful of the large swell and definitely stay away from the eastern end of the seaway during the run out tide. Fishing further north in the Broadwater for Flathead, try around Crab Island, The Aldershots, Browns Inlet and along the southern end of South Stradebroke Island around Currigee. - [ ] For Whiting, try around Budds Beach, the Council Chambers and Sorrento Straight. Still a few GT’s and Big eye Trevally in the rivers at night , casting poppers and stickbaiots work best, fish the run out tide, if the water is dirty .... don’t bother to fish the surface: For a feed of Sand Crabs, try around Sovereign Island both east and west side along the deep channel edges, overnight is best. SOUTHERN GOLD COAST AND BEACHES... This weekend is definitely nit a weekend to fish our southern beaches. Try in the rivers and creeks early morning on the high tide for Bream, Flathead and Whiting. Bream are also being caught along the rock walls throughout the Tweed Rivers and the creeks south of Burleigh Heads. A few decent Flathead around the sandbanks and weed patches from the Hospital to between the two highway bridges. Try for Whiting around the Tumbulgum Bridge and heading south to the sugar mill. FRESHWATER DAMS Some solid Bass were again caught in the Hinze Dam over the past week. Please be careful if you are up there this week, due to strong winds and very heavy rain. Later this week though, try fishing the waterfalls and run offs, as this is where the big fish will be feeding during that time. WHATS ON!!
