22.01.2022 HELPING TEENAGERS ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM COMBAT ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION Now, more than ever, we need to build the protective factors around our adolescents, particularly those on the spectrum. " A new website developed by QUT in partnership with Autism CRC and Positive Partnerships will help build protective factors against depression and anxiety for teenagers on the autism spectrum.... One in two young Australians on the autism spectrum experience anxiety and one in three experience depression, rates up to twice as high as those for non-autistic young Australians. The new website, www.autismteenwellbeing.com.au, is designed for parents, teachers, schools and communities to support wellbeing in teenagers on the autism spectrum by cultivating a sense of belonging and the ability to regulate emotions in the face of stress. Recent research indicates that 53% of autistic people aged 15-25 years old experience anxiety and 29% experience depression, compared to 25% and 17% (respectively) of their non-autistic peers (Study of Australian School Leavers with Autism, 2018). The resources available on the Autism Teen Wellbeing website were developed by building on the successful Commonwealth-endorsed Resourceful Adolescent Program (RAP). Today in our climate we believe the need in the community is increasing, and our ability to support that need is expanding into multiple locations both via physical sessions and online platforms In this video you will hear about stress, loss, anxiety and sadness - and the hope and healing that can be found through accessing professional support. 10.01.2022 It's (still) holiday time!! The mornings may be less frantic, the family taxi may be less active. However, for weeks and weeks siblings are been compressed together. YES they may get along or figure things out by themselves, but chances are parents might need to be a little proactive to help them develop the skills they need to manage relationships with family. Here is a resource that might be useful in helping your children reflect and consider how they interact, to develop effective conflict communication, and to work things out without crying ‘MUUUUUM, or ‘DAAAAAD! 10.01.2022 Did you know that getting back to nature can assist with reducing stress, anxiety and depression. Research suggests that interacting with natural spaces offers therapeutic benefits. For instance, calming nature sounds and outdoor silence can lower blood pressure and levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which calms the body's fight-or-flight response. While visually, being present in nature and noticing the greenery can assist with a reduction of negative thoughts. However,... not all people have access or time to spend outdoors. Therefore, finding ways to bring the outdoors inside can be a helpful with bring the calming effects of nature into your daily life. Dr. Strauss suggests that the type of nature setting doesn't matter. "Focus on places you find the most pleasing, the goal is to get away from stimulating urban settings and surround yourself with a natural environment."
