25.01.2022 Stay alert over the holiday season everyone.

25.01.2022 Wish I had of known this before I started. Ride the wave people.

24.01.2022 NVIDIA have announced the new lineup of graphics cards for this year. Cant wait to see local pricing and get my hands on one.

23.01.2022 Mac users beware, this is also for the Mac users that think that Macs don't get Malware.

23.01.2022 Giving this a bump, like and share to go into the draw :)

23.01.2022 If like me, you have been frustrated with the lack of support from the Narangba Valley State High School student I.T. support staff when it comes to getting student software onto student laptops, then this post is for you. This solution is for the Adobe Creative Suite of software such as Photoshop. The issue is that Queensland Education has a licence for the older 2018 version (v.19) of the software, not the current 2019 (V.20) software. Getting the older software is difficu...lt and the school charges $27 to supply it to you on a USB stick. The solution is as follows. 1. Create an Adobe Creative Cloud account, this is free, get it here. https://www.adobe.com/au/creativecloud.html , click on sign in and choose Get an Adobe ID. I used the students school email address and the school password for email just to keep things simple. 2. Download the Adobe CC Desktop App and Photoshop CC 2018 64bit from here, https://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cc-2018-direct-download-li . The Adobe CC Desktop App will auto update to the newest version which is OK. You will need to log in to both apps using the Adobe ID you just created. 3. Extract the compressed zip file and install the Adobe CC Desktop App first, then do the same thing for Photoshop 2018 V19. 4. Take the laptop to the Narangba Valley State High School student I.T. support staff, who will then be able to activate the software. This should work for the entire suite of software, but check with the student I.T. support staff first if you are unsure. Please like and share this post with anyone who has students attending NVSHS. This handy tip is supplied to you free of charge by GeekGuy I.T. Call 0491 120 171 for Fast and Reliable I.T. Support.

22.01.2022 It will be interesting to see how this ends up resolving. While Fibre to the Node will see many access faster internet than their ADSL2+ plans at present, the tech will be redundant far too soon. Cable users may soon face the same reality even though they can receive 100mbps right now if they choose to upgrade the plan they are on.

22.01.2022 Congratulations to Olivia Clark, winner of the December Thor Promotion. Will be in touch soon to drop of your prize :) With all the storm activity going on, couldnt be a better time to protect all your valuable electrical gear.

20.01.2022 Just met up with Olivia Clark and passed on her December Thor Promo prize. Congratulations again Olivia.

19.01.2022 NBN Rollout for Burpengary has commenced, finally some hope for more stable, and faster internet for you guys. Cant wait until Narangba starts rolling out.

18.01.2022 Recently I attended a job to investigate a hard drive with clicking noises coming from it. Below is a photo of the hard drive and the rings you can see on the round platters are the cause of the problem. The hard drive has been dropped and the rings are where the read head has scored the surface of the platters. This is death for a hard drive. The platters should be a clean mirror finish with no blemishes. Please, everyone, make sure you have a good backup. There is nothing ...that can be done for this hard drive and it was the only place this client had their information stored... all the kid photos and toddler first step videos are now gone. Hard drives are fragile and need to be treated with care. Any form of sudden movement can cause this kind of damage. If you would like to protect your data then please call 0491120171 and I will tailor a backup solution for you. Please share to remind those you care about to check their backups and make sure they have their precious information is stored on more than one hard drive.

17.01.2022 Just about all my customer base knows that I love my Surface Pro ... the Surface Studio however is just excellent, but pretty expensive. Australian pricing and release date have now been announced. So if anyone on my current client list buys one of these, I will help set it up, 1hr labour free, 1 customer only, first in best dressed :)

17.01.2022 This is a new ransomware scam, beware of ATO emails.

17.01.2022 I came across this over the weekend, hope you all enjoy it as well.

16.01.2022 RANSOMWARE OUTBREAK ALERT New TorrentLocker being spread on Optus Bill websites: If you are a Trend Micro customer: Make sure web reputation is on... Must have IP reputation on at least QIL level 2 At the present we have seen 143 compromised websites redirecting traffic to the TorrentLocker landing page: hxxp://abcvendingbrands.com/tpq1FOUXj/eIn0XNj4vUO.php hxxp://dentaquestnetwork.com/wZtKJyx0age/aVhWCXnEjUl1.php They are using landing pages such as: hxxp://optus-bills.net hxxp://optuspayment.org We advise IT Managers: Put such landing pages into firewalls for protection of other servers / devices (noting that they will rotate through multiple landing pages). The landing page is delivering malicious JavaScript. We advise users: Not to enter Captcha codes to any bill related websites you are not expecting.

16.01.2022 Is this the thing that will render VR devices like the Oculus Rift obsolete?

16.01.2022 I get inquiries regarding VPN and US Netflix pretty regularly. Hopefully this will help clarify the situation. Having said that though, if Netflix continue to actively block VPN providers, then it really is only a matter of time before we will be restricted to local Netflix content anyway.

16.01.2022 Over the past few weeks this email has been doing the rounds. Beware. If you interact with any of the links it will install Cryptolocker. Cryptolocker will encrypt all your documents, pictures and pdf files. You are then directed to pay a ransom to the makers of the virus in order to unlock your data. Note that the email address it is sent from is not an AGL email account. My Office 365 Hosted email exchange service successfully marked this as Junk and moved it into the junk folder. If you would like to find out more about Office 365 Hosted Exchange for email, then please contact me via email [email protected] or visit www.geekguyit.com.au and send me a message through the contact us page.

15.01.2022 Another day another scam ....

12.01.2022 Hmmm .... looks like our shiny new NBN connections are not as great as they could be. Also, 12Mbps plans are not NBN as far as I am concerned.

12.01.2022 Narangba Valley State High School now requires all Year 7 Students, from 2018 onwards, to Bring Your Own Device for school lessons. I have done my homework and have a great bundle deal that will satisfy the schools requirements and also be light weight for the kids to take in their school bag. Call 0491 120 171 or email [email protected] for more details and ordering.

11.01.2022 Ransomware Outbreak Alert Be aware of the newest Australia Post Scams. I have received 3 junk Aust Post messages in the last 2 days. Do not interact with them in any way except to delete the message. Interestingly the Australia Post retention of parcel rate seems to have gone up in my scam emails, from $1.65 per day to $1.74 per day.... If you are currently not using Trend Micro for your Antivirus and Antimalware solution then call 0491 120 171 to discuss your options and make a booking.

09.01.2022 Can't wait for the new Nvidia 1080's to hit the shelves, performance looks very impressive.

09.01.2022 Here is the new ad for GeekGuy I.T. which you may see at various locations around North Brisbane. It is going on screens at cash registers etc, so no sound, might put a track to it later.

07.01.2022 As the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic continues to escalate we are committed to keeping you updated on the precautions GeekGuy I.T. is taking and the changes we are implementing in response to the Australian Governments emergency requirements. We have been monitoring and following the advice from the Australian Government to keep our staff, your staff, and you safe. We have strengthened our protective procedures to help the Australian community flatten the curve and slow th...e spread of COVID-19. Additional steps we have taken: Our technicians have been equipped with additional personal protective equipment including hand sanitizer that will be used before and after any onsite service. Before entering a property, our technicians are asking customers if anyone in the property has tested positive to the coronavirus or is on home isolation. If there is any risk that our technicians may be exposed or that home isolation rules will be broken, the onsite service will be postponed for 2 weeks or you will be asked to reschedule as a remote session. Similarly if it is not possible for our technicians to maintain the new social-distancing rules, the onsite service will be postponed and you will be asked to reschedule your appointment until after the social distancing requirements are relaxed, or the area where the service is to take place can accommodate the Social Distancing requirements set out by the Australian Government. If you would prefer our technicians not to enter your household, but you have hardware related issues we can organise a doorstop pick up and drop off. All hardware will be sanitised before being returned. As is always the case, any staff member that is unwell is not attending work and we are requiring a doctors assessment prior to returning. Should one of our staff members be exposed to COVID-19, you can be assured we have contingency plans in place to protect our staff, your staff, and you. Remote and Managed Services GeekGuy I.T. has been providing remote services for customers for the last three years. Many service and maintenance tasks can be performed remotely with time being billed in twenty minute slots at $50 per twenty minutes. You will need to have TeamViewer installed. If you are unsure how to do this please call us on 0491 120 171. We encourage clients to contact us via [email protected] if you have any computer needs.

07.01.2022 So how long does it take to be connected to the NBN? #NBNfail For those interested, the story goes like this. I applied for my NBN connection on the 10th July. After numerous attempts to contact my RSP, I finally had the NBN techs connect me to my local node on the 15th August. This was much longer than the "allow up to 20 days to be connected" spiel on the website.... So on the 15th, my internet drops at about 9:30 am, and of course, I am thinking to myself, yay, lets hook up the new modem and start the fun. How wrong I was. I called my RSP to find out why I didnt have any internet, they politely informed me that the NBN techs have to fill in a report to complete the switch over, once that is done, the RSP can then activate the service and shortly after I would get the internet back on. Called again at 4 pm, still no internet. Caused by NBN not filing the report. On the 16th, called at 8 am, no internet, called at 10 am, no internet, called at 12noon, no internet, called at 4 pm, no internet. 17th August called again at 4 pm again because Ol Blinky the NBN modem was still not delivering the internet. Now at 9:30 pm, it finally turns on, below are my results. I am about 700m from the node, so this is about what most of us can expect from FTTN. I am on a 100Mbps down, 40Mbps up plan. The experience overall has been absolutely traumatizing. No real help from my RSP, and slow turn around times from NBN techs. Sure my internet is faster than before, but 3 days without the internet put pressures on my business and also my family. I have sympathy for those out there who have had a terrible transition onto the NBN. I feel your pain. We all rely on the internet so much these days, and there is only so much you can do on a mobile phone. I am looking forward to seeing how stable this new connection is and cant wait until NBN Co rolls out Fibre To The Curb so I can start receiving internet speeds that match the plan I am paying for.

06.01.2022 While NBNCo maintain the no delays rhetoric, there is still no NBN available for many customers in the Northern Suburbs of Brisbane. Hopefully the stars and moon will align soon to deliver much needed internet access in this part of Brisbane.

06.01.2022 This is the kind of VR that I believe will be the tipping point for future headset use. AR, or Augmented Reality, is pretty cool, just think what future GPS will be like.

04.01.2022 Cant wait for the new Nvidia 1080s to hit the shelves, performance looks very impressive.

03.01.2022 Nintendo have a new console coming out. Here is the First Look video for the Nintendo Switch.

02.01.2022 Here is another scam email example, this time supposedly from Australia Post. The dead giveaway is that the senders email address is not an Australia Post email address. I am not sure at this point what the links will do, however in past experience you will end up with malware and potentially be requested for credit card details. If you would like to know more about Microsoft Hosted Exchange solutions or Trend Micro anti virus solutions, call 0491 120 171.

02.01.2022 NVIDIA have announced the new lineup of graphics cards for this year. Can't wait to see local pricing and get my hands on one.

01.01.2022 Mac users beware, this is also for the Mac users that think that Macs dont get Malware.
