21.01.2022 JOHN (JONATHON) GODFREY REEVES was born in March 1847 at Eniscorthy, Ireland and arrived in Hobson’s Bay on board the clipper ship Lightning on the 27th Nov. 1855. On leaving school he entered the office of E.H. Cole & Co., Wine & Spirits Merchants in Geelong (his sister Hannah was E.H. Coles wife) and remained with this firm for seven years. then moved to Dunedin, New Zealand and worked there for nine years (with his brothers Charles Stevens Reeves who became mayor of D...unedin and Richard Reeves a politician ) as Manager of Reeves & Co. Aerated Waters & Cordial Manufacturers. Reeves then returned to Geelong and worked initially as Manager of the Clifton Springs Mineral Water Co. He was also the Lessee of the company but after spending six years there did not renew the lease after it had expired. Reeves then started his business in Geelong on the 1st November 1885, calling the business the Corio Steam Aerated Water Manufactory, with his factory situated on the corner of Smythe & Cavendish Streets. Geelong. This would have been in opposition to his cousin Chas Cole's business. His business evidently flourished as during the Summer of 1887 the production of drinks increased from 600 dozen bottles per day to 1200 dozen bottles per day. Some of the flavours advertised for sale by the firm were Soda Water, Lemonade, Gingerade, Sarsaparilla, Tonic Water and Dandelion Ale. J.G. Reeves was declared insolvent on 1st February 1890 and the business closed down that year. See more
20.01.2022 A few photos of some great rare jars and bottles. All highly sought after if you did happen to have one or know of one. You may see similar at our October 2 nd and 3rd Show. We are waiting until late July or early August to make a final decision on possibility of the show running. If it does go ahead we have decided to cut the Sunday to reduce show costs and increase its chances of running.

20.01.2022 Hello collectors. A reminder that as there has been no change to social distancing laws our April meeting has been cancelled. Schedules for our October show are out and available at our club website to download and print.... Aw big Thankyou to Paul Bruce for the hours he spent on the schedule. It is comprehensive to encourage everyone to enter the category of their choice. And another Thank you to Dave Bruce for updating our website and loading up the PDF of the schedule etc. Without volunteers shows would not happen. David Smith has spoken with AWA stadium and their thinking is the same as ours. That is yes, plan the event, get everything ready and decide much closer to the time if we need to cancel. A couple of great Geelong coloured glass items. The beautifully coloured AVA cordials is from Fyansford. The Chas Cole whisky is perhaps their last fully embossed bottle. We all miss lingering at Eastern beach . Stay safe. https://www.geelongbottleandcollectables.club

19.01.2022 Geelong’s Chas Cole and Co was one of Australia’s leading wine and spirit and aerated water companies in the period 1880 to 1930’s This may be surprising as it was after the grape vine disease phylloxera had been through the district. They registered a distinctive trade mark known as the Halcyon. One of their products was even called ‘Halcyon Cocktail (see image) The term "halcyon" is usually associated with calm, peace, prosperity and affluence all very desirable in an... aerated water and wine and spirit business on the shores of Corio Bay --however the derivation of the meaning goes back to Greek mythology. The story goes that Alkyone, the daughter of the god of the winds, became so distraught when she learned that her husband had been killed in a shipwreck that she threw herself into the sea and was changed into a kingfisher. As a result, ancient Greeks called such birds alkyon or halkyon. The legend also says that such birds built floating nests on the sea, where they so charmed the wind god that he created a period of unusual calm that lasted until the birds' eggs hatched. This legend prompted people to use halcyon both as a noun naming a genus of kingfisher and as an adjective meaning either "of or relating to the kingfisher or its nesting period" or calm. 11.01.2022 The Geelong Advertiser dated 30th August 1919 Geelong Aerated Waters Pty. Ltd. is the name of the new company that is to control practically all soft drink manufacture in this City. It will have a capital of 25,000 Pounds and embrace a few of the leading financial men of this district. With the closing of Bollington’s and Trait’s the field has been left to Messrs Chas. Cole & Co. The promoters of the venture approached the latter with the result forces have been amalgama...ted. Messrs Chas. Cole & Co. have one of the most up to date plants in Australia, in many respects it is ahead of anything in Victoria, but more room is required for expansion. 11.01.2022 Hello fellow collectors. In these tough times things have gone quiet on our page so I thought I would tell you of my lucky find today. I was fortunate to pick up a light aqua AVA Cordials, Fyansford. A new aquaintance had a box Of abandoned bottles in his yard. I was asked to appraise them. This was the only one of any value so some negotiations and a swap for a Broken Hill Crown Seal he desired bought this beauty to its new home. The citron one is hard enough but I have n...ever seen the aqua before. Has anyone else? I hope you are all well and safe. We will get through this. David Smith
10.01.2022 HODGES BROS BREWERY Isaac Hodges, an Englishman, arrived in Victoria in the mid 1840’s and moved to Geelong in the early 1860’s. In 1868 he bought the Royal Brewery in Malop St, the brewery site was originally the Royal Theatre, built by Henry Elmes in 1849. Isaac Hodges died in 1875 and his Brewery was taken over by his sons. At least three of the sons, Frederick, Isaac and Harry managed the Brewery and they changed the name of the Brewery to Hodges Bros. Brewery In about... 1881 they sold this Brewery to James Miller & Co. and bought the larger West End Brewery in La Trobe Terrace. They modernised the old brewery building and then again operated under the name of Hodges Bros. Brewery. The Brewery owned at least 12 hotels around Geelong and stocked them with its own beer. By 1889 the Brewery was employing 18 men and the monthly output of bottled beer was 1700 dozen with a further sale of 14,000 gallons of draught beer . The business was sold to the Carlton & United Brewery in 1925 They appear to have used only paper labelled bottles and a sand blasted ring seal beer Click on images to enlarge See more
09.01.2022 One of Geelong's earliest bottles is from the Chemist and Dentist J. T. Thomas --------he purchased the Medical Hall in Malop St from E Towle & Co in July 1850. Not long after the purchase Thomas advertised he was the sole agent for Dr Holloways Pills and ointments in Geelong and the Western District See pictures of a "surcharged "JT Thomas Holloway token (Mus Vic collection). J T Thomas bottles are very hard to get and there are a number of mould variations We would of course be very interested to hear about any E Towle bottles or containers if they exist .(Click on images to enlarge) PB

08.01.2022 C E Graham Marble Bottles These are very rare bottles from Portarlington on the Bellarine Peninsula. It has long been known that Mr Graham owned a successful general store and tobacconist shop in Portarlington. It was assumed that he operated a small aerated water machine to make soft drinks to sell through this outlet. He was also an enthusiastic poultry breeder and exhibitor with his black orphingtons in his All Black poultry farm. Mr Graham won many prizes for his marksm...anship in the Portarlington rifle club and trophies as a bowler. He was a Shire Councillor in the Bellarine Shire. He and Thomas Wardin from the Grand Hotel Portarlington were prosecuted in the Drysdale courthouse (the historical society building) on the 26th October 1906 for using other manufacturers trade- marked bottles perhaps this explains why the C E Graham bottles are so hard to get The photo from David Smith's collection shows the 3 known variations of the bottles This kind of prosecution occurred all over Victoria as large companies were losing the use of their own bottles. This case was reported widely in the press due to the large 100 pound fine imposed Click on the images to enlarge See more

06.01.2022 Charles Cole was arguably Geelong's most famous wine judge Having been chairman of judges of the major capital city wine shows for many years He also made many award winning Geelong wines. Two such wines have come to light recently via labels discovered on old bottles One is for Constantia and the other Xmas Port Both were most likely table wines fortified with grape spirit Port of course originated in Portugal in Oporto in the 16th Century Constantia was a famous 16th Century South African wine which originated in the Constantia valley on the edge of Cape Town and was made from an aromatic variety of Muscat grape Both of Chas Coles wines would have most likely been made from Geelong grapes of the correct varieties
05.01.2022 Should be some local stuff amongst this!
04.01.2022 OUR club is in the process of documenting the containers, advertising labels and posters of early Geelong traders and manufacturers. Some chemists have been particularly elusive Our last post on AJ Rushbrook unearthed a chemist dose cup we were not aware of . Our next elusive chemist is JAMES FARR DENTRY J. F. DENTRY appears to have commenced business in Jan.1885, having purchased the wholesale, retail and drug business of Mr. W. Colledge at 124 Moorabool St. In Jan. 1903 the premises, owned by W. Colledge was sold and Dentry relocated his business to 1 Moorabool St, opposite the then Moorabool Street Theatre. If any readers have more information about this chemist we would love to hear about it.
04.01.2022 Hello GB&CC Members, I am back from a great trip to NZ National show in Tauranga North Island. Made it home before the deadline but now in compulsory self isolation for two weeks. ... More on that trip in a newsletter report that I must send to Tony ! Your committee has had several phone discussions and have made the reluctant decision to suspend Monday 23/04/2020 AGM and General meeting. Current positions will retain status quo until we can run an AGM. We can review whether we can meet April 27th and subsequent meetings. This will be reviewed on a monthly basis by the executive committee Yes I know bit of a pain but necessary to protect the members at this stage. Please contact Paul, Cam or my self any time through this. We will send out emails as often as we can with any news and like that turns up. and look at our face book page and website. Please send me photos of any thing you find and I will pass on to members. Nothing stopping you from being out and about digging and supporting collectable shops. Bottle shows, swap meets and like have been cancelled . The internet will probably be your best friend through this period,. ABCR Auctions are on in April and there are many bottle, dig & dive, tins and like face book sites on line check them out and have some input. Committee will finalise the October 2nd to 4th show schedule, by email and send it out via ABCR magazine and Internet. Our plan is to prepare for and run the October Show at the moment. Obviously we can review it closer to the date. Cheers in Collecting David If any member needs any supplies due to panic buying please contact me on 0419434306 . P

04.01.2022 A J. RUSHBROOK. Albert James Rushbrook commenced business as a chemist in Ballarat in 1891 in Albert St Sebastopol (next to the post office). During his time in Ballarat he won a gold medal from the Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria. He moved to Geelong in about 1913, trading from 48 Malop Street. His premises were sold to Moran and Cato in 1917 and were to be demolished for their new shop .We are not sure what his bottle Salcuro (pictured) actually contained. Records are sketchy but it appears he also had a Chemist shop at 168 Pakington Street until his retirement in around 1940. His sons Albert Vincent and Kenneth were both Pharmacists and continued the business as A. J. Rushbrook & Sons. Click on the pictures to enlarge Paul B
03.01.2022 An old faded label on a bottle revealed an interesting story ---- LANSDOWNE NURSERY IN HIGHTON GEELONG WERE PIONEERS IN THE SACARAMENTAL "WINE" INDUSTRY the Geelong Advertiser reported the following in May 1881 A new industry is being gradually fostered at the Lansdowne nursery, at Highton, . by an old resident of that locality, Mr J. P. Foster. It is the supplying of the market with unfermented wines, in every way suitable for sacramental purposes, and of exceptional value... to sick persons. For some years Mr Foster was furnishing his customers with wine which passed through a boiling process, but the liquor lost its flavour, and as a marketable product had very little demand. Experiments have been from time to time made by Mr Foster to preserve the wine without boiling it, and yet supply the liquor pure from the grape, and in a perfectly unfermented state. In this he has been successful, and now a non-alcoholic beverage containing the full flavour of the grape is placed in the market for general consumptionfor all classes of worshippers of the rosy god. At a meeting of ministers and laymen of different churches, held in the Mechanics' Institute the other day, the wine was highly approved of as a liquor to be used in the church sacraments. Like everything else where skill has to be employed, a secret underlies the process of preserving the wine, and this Mr Foster keeps to himself, although he removes all doubt as to the genuineness of the grape juice by stating that the wine is unadulterated, as its purity of colour and taste amply testify. When gathered the grapes are passed through a mill, and the juice crushed out in the ordinary way adopted at all vineyards, and certain things done to prevent the fermentation of the liquor, whilst the colour is retained. It is then placed in casks, afterwards bottled, and supplied as ordered. With the limited appliances at hand, Mr Foster is able to make about ten hogsheads of various kinds of wine every year. One of the recommendations of the wine is that it improves with age and becomes a refreshing beverage. Mr Foster is now making an unfermented cider and is about to introduce a wine made from pomegranates, which is said to have peculiar medicinal properties. In addition to the wine industry, Mr Foster also cultivates nearly three acres of land in the rearing of fruit and ornamental trees and a variety of plants." "

03.01.2022 DOMINION SCHNAPPS A club member recently acquired this square bottle c1900 with Dominion on one side and schiedam on another and aromatic schnapps on another It had been apparently found in New Zealand. After a little research we found that ---The important thing to know is that Schnapps is Gin and Schiedam is a city and municipality in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands. The city is known for its historical center with canals, and for having the tallest windmills in the world. Schiedam is also famous for the distilleries and malthouses and production of jenever (gin) so much so that in French and English the word schiedam (usually without a capital s) refers to the town’s Holland gin. This was the town’s main industry during the early Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th century. (Wikipedia)

01.01.2022 Hope you are all fit and well and still collecting At our committee meeting on Sunday it was reluctantly resolved to cancel our two day State Show in October 2020 due to the uncertainties surrounding COVID 19 We have delayed this decision for as long as possible in the hope that the incidence of the COVID 19 virus would decline. With an overall budget in the order of $20000 we do need a considerable attendance from collectors and the public for us to cover costs. Our commit...tee felt that given the current lockdowns and restrictions on travel we could not proceed any further with our planning due to difficulty we would have in getting collector and public attendance and the considerable financial risks involved. Consequently we will be refunding our early entrants and stallholders and thanking them for their support. We were gratified by the excellent reaction by the general public and artisans to the Lost Skills workshops that were planned throughout the show weekend and will be asking the artisans we had approached to support the Lost skills component of our show in 2021 Our committee also agreed that we should commence planning to run our show in the same weekend in October 2021. They also agreed that the 2021 show would be a one day show with the normal setup on the Friday before the show on the Saturday . We will keep you informed about the 2021 show as our planning for this show progresses. Thanking you for your support and understanding Stay Safe Paul Bruce Secretary Geelong Bottle and Collectables Club inc. See more
