22.01.2022 Geelong Filipino Martial Arts Club will be moving venue this week. Classes will now be run from the Ultimate Muay Thai as of this Thursday. Will be great to be in a bigger, better equipped gym, but also sad to see the old Fighter Edge gym go, has been a great little club for the past few years. Will be looking forward to moving into excellent new venue.
17.01.2022 I have been in the Philippines competing and training for two weeks now, of a three week stay. The first week was spent competing in the World Stick Fighting Championships(14th WEKAF) I am happy to announce that I won a gold and also bronze medal, becoming the World Champion in two handed stick and also winning bronze in knife. I have been training under Supreme Grand-master Dionisio Canete and still have one more week of training to go, learning invaluable lessons. - Josh Wilkins (Head Instructor)
17.01.2022 Excellent result last weekend for the club. We had 2 members enter the Australian National Stick Fighting Tournament on Saturday with both Kyle and Hunter winning gold medals in their events. They will now both be invited to represent Australia at the WEKAF World Championships in the Philippines next year. Great work Kyle and Hunter.
10.01.2022 Great result for the Club on the weekend, at the National Stick Fighting Titles in Western Australia. 2 Golds and 1 Silver.
05.01.2022 Article from the Geelong Independant from a couple of weeks back. FAST FIGHTS A PROMISE by NOEL MURPHY MARTIAL arts are fast and furious, to say the least, but when their best practitioners pad up to the eyeballs in protective gear you know you’re in for a rumble of the first order.... And if you think Filipino stick fighting is a blur, you’re right. The speed involved is lightning fast. But the power behind two 70cm wooden war sticks in a fully-fledged assault is deadly too so it’s no accident stick fighters are padded up like bomb disposal sappers. This weekend, a Filipino stick fighting tournament will be staged at Geelong West’s Peter de Been Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Club in an exhibition show of reflexes and fitness. Although this sounds dangerous it is a very safe sport,’’ says organiser Josh Wilkins, coach of Tony Salta’s Boxing Gym and head instructor at Fighter Edge Fitness martial Arts. Filipino martial arts are much more than just stick fighting but the sport was created so that martial artists could test their skill, reflexes and fitness in a safe competitive environment. Glen Eden, who won the over-40s world championships in the Philippines last year, will help officiate the tournament.’’ The bill will feature a Brazilian jiu jitsu tournament as well and is set to kick off at 10am on Saturday at the Villamanta Place clubhouse. 04.01.2022 Australian Stickfighting Association held their annual National Titles on Saturday. Fortunately they were in Bendigo this year so we didn't have far to travel. Two competitors from Geelong entered, Kyle Tidd and Josh Wilkins. Although eliminated early, Kyle fought very well putting in his best performance to date, against the best stickfighters in Australia. Josh made it to the finals, getting 2nd place in the Heavy weight division.
