21.01.2022 The Western Australia Police Pipe Band (WAPOL) would like to announce the official launch of the Western Australia Police Youth Development Pipe Band. The band ...will feature both a professional grassroots teaching program as well as a non-competing performance pipe band. This is available for all young people aged under 18 and will provide a safe and unique musical learning experience, both for the benefit of the community of Western Australia and its local piping and drumming scene. Tutored by the world-class members of WA Police Pipe Band, members ranging from complete beginners to the more advanced will be able to build self-confidence, communication skills, discipline and musical skills on the bagpipes or drums, creating new friendships and connections along the way. The WA Police Youth Development Pipe Band will be managed by Alisdair McLaren, the Pipe Major of the WA Police Pipe Band. Alisdair has extensive experience in this field having recently spent 11 years at The National Piping Centre in Glasgow as Director of The National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland (NYPBoS). The NYPBoS is one of the world’s premier youth pipe bands and currently boasts some of Scotland’s best young pipers and drummers in its ranks. Pipe Major Alisdair McLaren said: Being a local West Australian, learning and developing my piping skills firstly through my school band at Trinity College and the Police & Citizens Youth Club, I am extremely excited about this new venture from the WA Police Pipe Band. Development is so vital in any local scene to ensure that the tradition and rich history is maintained for the future. Having been involved in developing young people in Scotland for over a decade, I’m really looking forward to being able to now do this in my home town, passing on the knowledge and skills gained from playing at the highest level to the next generation. This will help them become better musicians and also assist with the development of fundamental life skills. In time these players will then be able to filter out and be a part of their local band within the WA community. The team here at WAPOL is made up of many world class pipers and drummers with years of experience so it’s a fantastic opportunity for the local community to take advantage of this. Hopefully in the future we’ll see some of these kids making their mark both locally and internationally. Leading Drummer David Johnston said: I am very excited to be a part of this effort to bring young people together from all different backgrounds, cultures and communities to not only learn and develop as musicians, but to experience the camaraderie and team work within the WA Police Youth Development Pipe Band. Starting my drumming career at 11 years old and having taught drumming for the best part of 10 years, I know from personal experience how crucial it is to make sure that the youth of piping and drumming achieve the correct basic skills needed to perform within a pipe band. As well as improving their playing ability these young people will gain vital social and communication skills, and for some, the opportunity to step in to a leadership role. The youth players today are the future pipers and drummers within the WA pipe band community that will be set on the path to maintain and sustain the standard and growth of pipe bands within Western Australia. I am looking forward to working with the young pipers and drummers of WA to help them progress and achieve the highest standard of musicianship possible. Officer in Charge, Sergeant Darren King said: Developing youth is the only key to pipe band success and longevity. The WA Police Youth Development Pipe Band has now created an opportunity for young West Australians to learn from, and play alongside Australia’s Grade 1 WA Police Pipe Band. As the Officer in Charge of the WA Police Pipe Band I am excited for the future of the program and look forward to working alongside our future stars of the pipes and drums. The band is now actively recruiting for membership from complete beginners to young people already playing the pipes or drums. For more information and to register your interest, please contact Alisdair McLaren via email at [email protected] .

12.01.2022 Are you interested in attending one of these free Clan MacLennan webinars hotted by our Clan Genealogist, Bruce McLennan. Author Michael Veitch will be present...ing an ‘author talk’ during two separate sessions listed below. Extreme Migration Voyage HELL SHIP Zoom Author Talk next Tuesday pm or Wednesday am (Aust Eastern time) REGISTER NOW! For more than a century and a half, a grim tale has passed down through Michael Veitch's family: the story of the Ticonderoga, a clipper ship that sailed from Liverpool in August 1852, crammed with poor but hopeful emigrants - mostly Scottish. The Boston-built Ticonderoga was an elegant example of the record-breaking, modern clippers. The 1852 Passengers Act and the Highlands and Islands Emigration Society went to great pains to look after the migrants. The new Great Circle Route had shortened the voyage time. Yet one in eight of her passengers were to die. In his book HELL SHIP: The true story of the plague ship Ticonderoga, author Michael Veitch tells the story of his ancestor and how the disaster unfolded. The book is available from bookshops (ISBN: 9781760877460 ), or by Apple Books or Kindle or as an audio book. Every family has a story Michael shares his experience in how to collect your family’s story at www.hellshipticonderoga.com Tuesday August 4 KINTAIL ROOM 7.00pm Sydney/Melb/Bris time, or Wednesday August 5 CAPE BRETON ROOM 9.00am Sydney/Melb/Bris time To REGISTER - email [email protected]

08.01.2022 A message from THE SCOTTISH BANNER. As Covid-19 continues to cause great concern and disruption amongst the world, which certainly includes our very own Scottish community. One of the industries severely impacted are those of us in publishing, with many titles around the country already folding, and due to cancelled events, travel restrictions and impacts to Scottish businesses the Scottish Banner has lost a great deal of advertising revenue going forward. In addition, Scotti...sh festivals are currently not taking place causing a further major cut to revenue. Every reader that buys their own print or digital copy makes a big difference to keeping the Scottish Banner viable. Thanks as always for your support, Sean The Scottish Banner PO Box 6202 Marrickville South, NSW 2204, Australia P: (+ 61) 02 9559 6348 E: [email protected]
