24.01.2022 Did you know of the exciting environmental action taking place at our Armstrong Creek campus? On Tuesday, seven students and three staff members planted out an indigenous plant woodland in the south west corner of the campus. The plants are all indigenous to the Mount Duneed region and include River Red Gums, Yellow Gums, Drooping She-oak, Lightwood (wattle) and Sweet Bursaria. Overall, about 120 plants were planted. The team is hopeful that the predicted rain in the coming week will help the plants develop their root systems in preparation for summer.

22.01.2022 Welcome to Ash Wednesday. The day marks the beginning of Lent, a period of 40 days leading into Easter. In ancient times, ashes were used to express grief or as a symbol of humble repentance. In current times, the use of ashes is generally an external sign of repentance and a reminder of our mortality. When the ashes are smeared on someone’s forehead in the shape of a cross, it is a symbolic reminder of the fact that Jesus’ death on the cross was for our salvation.
22.01.2022 We farewelled the students after school this afternoon in the beautiful weather.
22.01.2022 There's a very creative pathway developing at our GLC Armstrong Creek campus, with our robotics devotees honing their skills for an upcoming competition. Known as SEMATICS (Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Arts, Technology) 102 2020, the team members compete in competitions where their advanced programming skills are required to complete time-limited tasks. In preparation for its next competition the team presented to Head of College Ms Lange-Mohr and Principal Ms Ellis. Mrs Hollett has been mentoring the young cohort, with everyone giving generously of their own time. We look forward to seeing them represent the College professionally and creatively, just as they have done on previous occasions.
21.01.2022 At GLC St John's Newtown we acknowledge the Wadawurrung people of the Kulin nations, the Traditional Owners of the land on which we learn. We stand with them in acknowledging NAIDOC Week and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

21.01.2022 The wonderful thing about teachers is that all other professions emerge from the influence of those who are committed to developing the next generation. Today we celebrate those people who so wonderfully shape our children at St John's Newtown. Happy Teacher's International Day!
21.01.2022 We invite you to view and enjoy our new video showcasing the GLC uniform. With the transition period drawing to a close we thought it was important to show off the uniform that is to be worn by every student from the beginning of next year. https://vimeo.com/470453723
21.01.2022 On 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. With their armies retreating and close to collapse, German leaders signed an Armistice, bringing to an end the First World War. From the summer of 1918, the five divisions of the Australian Corps had been at the forefront of the allied advance to victory. Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wa...rs and armed conflicts. The reason poppies are used to remember those who have given their lives in battle is because they are the flowers which grew on the battlefields after World War One ended. This is described in the famous World War One poem In Flanders Fields. 'They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.' Lest We Forget

20.01.2022 After Friday's initial post, here's the official word from Miss Stevenson: What’s My Business 2020" As with each year, the Year 5 and 6 students of GLC St John’s Newtown have been working tirelessly throughout the term to prepare their ‘What’s My Business’ products and stalls. The unit sees students create a business and product idea, to then pitch to a ‘shark tank’ of school personnel such as Ms Lange-Mohr, Mrs Ellis and Mr Illingworth (amongst others) in the hopes of secu...ring a $20 loan. Students then use this loan to buy and create products for sale over the course of two market days, with all proceeds going towards the Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS). Friday marked the first of these exciting market days, with weeks’ worth of work, preparation and planning leading towards their very own group stall. Spirits were high amongst all students at St John’s on Friday, as classes took turns visiting the market to partake in games, and to purchase some of the wonderful items on offer. The day was a rousing success, with many groups selling out, and boasting fantastic first round profits. The cycle will begin again next week, with groups re-stocking and re-imagining their businesses, in preparation for the Main Market Day in Week 8, before deciding how to best use their proceeds to help others in need. This is definitely the case for Indi who has been working industriously during remote learning, as she has taken to baking cookies to raise money for RU OK day. To date, Indi has raised $300. In good news for us all, Indi hasnt finished yet and is ready to take orders for anyone who would like to place an order. One box of four cookies sells for $10. 16.01.2022 Establishing a daily routine with your family will be one of the key strategies to support you during remote learning. It is also a wonderful way to build family bonds and create time to fun and connection. The following article provides great tips on the how and why of family routines. https://raisingchildren.net.au//routines-r/family-routines
16.01.2022 Never doubt the fact that there are always people who care! The Geelong Lutheran College community recently received a gift pack from Bobby, a 14-year old, Year 8 student from Trinity Lutheran College on the Gold Coast. Mindful that restrictions on movement are significantly tighter in Victoria than in Queensland, Bobby pieced together a gesture of care to help us through this challenging time. A talented musician and keen golfer, Bobby included a letter informing our College community of his experience in school, and at play, in Queensland, while also sending us good wishes for the future. Bobbys Mum grew up just outside Ballarat, so we think there is a bit of Victorian in him. We are so grateful for the inspiring generosity and thoughtfulness of this caring 14-year old.

14.01.2022 Fun on the road to Canberra for our Year 6 students.
14.01.2022 GLC String Program 2021 In 2021 we are very excited to be launching our Year 3 Strings Program at both campuses. This program will be a welcome addition to our music department and forge the beginnings of an orchestral program at GLC. For one semester, students will be involved in a violin class. They will be provided with a violin to take home and practice in order to hone their skills. The learning of the violin will heighten students’ leadership and cooperative skills. T...hey will build their confidence and resilience and heighten their ability to focus. Students will also develop their aural ability and gain a practical understanding of music notation. The violin provides students with a very kinesthetic experience and draws together many thinking skills including social and emotional skills, critical and creative thinking and problem solving. In addition, it’s fun. Students will be energised with the sound of making music together, playing along to backing tracks and building friendships. We can’t wait to hear the results of these budding violinists in 2021. Earlier today, Armstrong Creek students Grace and Ryoma welcomed the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the new instruments. See more

09.01.2022 Last Friday saw our Year 3 and 4 students visit the ‘Surf Coast Strawberry Fields’ to pick some berries as an introduction to the Year 4 ‘Kitchen Garden Program’. This was followed by a walk from the Torquay Surf Club along the Esplanade to Elephant Park. It provided a good opportunity to introduce our inquiry topic ‘Our Planet Our Future’ as students were asked to notice the environment along the walk.

08.01.2022 Congratulations to our Year 5 & 6 'What's My Business?' owners who successfully took their new initiatives to market today. The students had previously 'pitched' their ideas in a Shark Tank-like scenario to gain the necessary funds ($20) to begin their ventures. A range of goods and services were on offer with all proceeds generated going to support Australian Lutheran World Service, the overseas aid and resettlement agency of the Lutheran Church of Australia. We're so proud of our young, aspiring businesswomen and men.

Some of the Year 9 & 10 onsite learning students made biscuits to be delivered to the Barwon Health, Baxter House Covid-19 wards. The gesture was part of a thank you gift, from the GLC community, for the medical fraternity working so hard to keep our broader community safe and well. #weareallinthistogether
