24.01.2022 Do you want to see what we see when we are using Ground Penetrating Radar? Well, this is the video for you. In this video, I take you onto a real job site where we have been using radar trying to locate the underground services in the area, before they come through and dig a new trench. It's a quiet job site, with minimal traffic on the side road that we are working on, so I finally get the chance to show you exactly what underground services look like on the GPR monitor and how different they can look simply by moving from one soil type to another. Also in the video, I make reference to Daniel Bigman from Learn GPR. If you are interested in radar and would like to learn more about how it actually works and the science behind it all, then I highly recommend you check him out. Here is a link to his website - https://bigmangeo.com/
24.01.2022 Once again, another real estate sign, somehow, just misses causing a catastrophe.
24.01.2022 If you ever do a Dial Before You Dig request and an email comes back saying you need to pay for the plans, DON'T DO IT. Here is a video I made this afternoon, that might help you out.
23.01.2022 Some restrictions are set to be eased tomorrow. However, I don't like our chances of being allowed to go away just yet. But hey, I guess there is nothing wrong with being hopeful hahahahahaha
22.01.2022 Its good that the guys putting the new fence in waited till I got to site to locate where the power and phone cables were. Although that front fence is a bit to close to the underground services. I guess, maybe let's just give them the benefit of the doubt and hope they dug it by hand.
22.01.2022 This is something we don't see every day and is pretty cool
22.01.2022 In this video we show you; - Why we look up Dial Before You Dig plans, even if we are working on private property; - How we hook onto a Telstra cable that we need to locate; - Where we can obtain additional more information about underground electrical services, when not shown on the DBYD plans; - What an underground power pit looks like;... - A different way to induce a signal onto a power cable, rather than clamping around the cable at the pit. 20.01.2022 Gas main hit in Ballarat this morning. https://www.thecourier.com.au//gas-leak-blocks-one-of-ba/
20.01.2022 Gas pipe struck and damaged, warning message gets sent out to residents in the area to go inside and brings there pets inside with them. https://www.standard.net.au//gas-leak-contained-in-new-ho/
20.01.2022 This video is for those of you that are new to locating / surveying or even those that have been doing it for a little while but are still a bit shy and reserved. Sometimes, you have to get out of your comfort zone and even get a bit confrontational in order to get all the key stakeholders to understand and appreciate, that you are here to help them and that if you don’t get full access and get everything you need, then you won’t be able to fully do your job to the best of yo...ur ability and the risk of something going wrong and a service being missed will be greatly increased. Actually, the video is probably good also for fencing contractors and other related contractors to watch as well, as it shows how a job that traditionally would have only taken an hour can take so much longer simply because of the hurdles you have to jump through on some of the sites we work at.
16.01.2022 For anyone that works from home or even a noisy office and has issues with background noise when trying to do Zoom or Skype call, you will love this FREE noise cancelling program that you can put on your mac or PC or even your Apple phone - https://snip.ly/gu2kog
15.01.2022 Road workers hit gas pipe today.
13.01.2022 Chalking up another win for the camera vs the reel. At this site, we not only were able to locate the entire sewer line, which I highly doubt we would have been able to do if we had used our normal locatable push rod. But we also found an issue with the sewer line itself. So we were able to show it to the homeowner there and then. We then went and located exactly where the issue was and took a recording of the whole line which we gave to the homeowner. They can now schedule ...their plumber to come out at a time that suits both the homeowner and the plumber and do some preventive maintenance, well before this causes any issues in the future. I’m starting to lose track, but I think we are up to win number 28 for the Ridgid camera vs the fibreglass reel we used to always use :) Still can’t believe I didn’t buy one of these years ago. Seriously, if you are a professional locator and you are not yet using a CCTV camera then I highly recommend you head down to Sydney Tools or get in touch with RIDGID Australia and get your hands on one of these. Trust me, you will be glad you did. See more
10.01.2022 Melbourne eastern suburbs were without internet due to cables being hit at a Box Hill site last Friday. Well would you believe we actually knew these cables were there as we were out there looking at this site 2 years ago.
09.01.2022 This is more of a tip for those that have to travel for work, but as we come into Christmas holidays and with everyone having to travel locally instead of heading overseas, this little tip might also help a few of you out as well.
09.01.2022 Do you know any restaurant or cafe owners or managers that are thinking of setting up some new outdoor dining areas, to comply with the new Covid restrictions? If you do, do you mind sharing this video with them, or even just tagging them in the comments below, so that they are reminded to make sure they know what is below the ground before they do any works? They especially have been through so much these last 6 months or so, the last thing they need is to finally start serv...ing customers again and then have someone hit the phone line going into there restaurant, causing them to lose their EFTPOS facilities. Or even, hit a gas pipe and cause the whole place to be evacuated. So if we can help make them aware of the risks and remind them to check where everything is first, it will at least be one less thing, that could go wrong for them this year :) Thanks Ben
09.01.2022 Yes, home security is paramount, I completely get that and am not disputing that at all. Also understand that on busy roads high fences can make a big difference to the quality of life and the ability to enjoy some peace and quiet while at home, that is totally cool. But, all I am saying is that, if you are going to have high fences surrounding your property, please, add a doorbell or sign with your phone number on it or have some way that guys like us, who are trying to hel...Continue reading
08.01.2022 We recently joined Ausjet Ltd They are an association that deals with high pressure jetting, drain cleaning and vacuum excavation. Whilst we might not use ultra high pressure jetting or do any industrial drain cleaning as such, we still do have a hydro excavator that digs at 6,000 psi and we have access to a range of vacuum truck that can go up to 3,000 CFM. So it just makes sense to join an association that is focused on the safety of the guys out in the field and setting the standard for the industry to follow.
08.01.2022 Underground gas and water services don’t always run straight from the meter to the main. Here we have two houses, both built at the same time. One has the services coming from the meter, out to the driveway, then up to the main, the other has it from the main straight to the meter.
06.01.2022 I still can’t believe it has taken us so many years to actually buy a CCTV pipe inspection camera. For years, we would use our locatable fibreglass push rod reels to try and locate any pipe that we had access to that was not conducive. And look, for 20+ years those reels have worked great and still continue to work well when we are locating long runs of fibre optic cables. But when locating sewer pipes or stormwater drains that often have multiple bends along them, we would ...Continue reading
05.01.2022 A big thank you to Dial Before You Dig NSW & ACT for sending us down some of the new Dial Before You Dig face masks and Dial Before You Dig sanitiser wipes. The ongoing support and assistance DBYD New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory have given us over the years, despite the fact that we are based in Victoria, is really very appreciated.
05.01.2022 In this video, we are in an area that is full of rabbit burrows that need to be destroyed. There are a few options to do this: they can excavate through them, they can use dynamites to destroy them, or they can fumigate them. But, before deciding which option to choose, they first need to confirm where all the underground services are in the surrounding area. So, that is what they have called us out here to do.
04.01.2022 Very close call this afternoon, with an Audi SUV nearly driving through a red light near Geelong High School.
04.01.2022 This is why you always Dial Before You Dig prior to any excavating. And if you get the plans back and you still can't work out where the cables are on site, then call us and we will come and mark out the location of them on the ground for you. Or if you are from interstate (we only service Victoria) then get onto the DBYD Certification Ltd website which will give you a list of certified locators right around the country. ... https://www.sheppnews.com.au//rushworth-loses-internet-and Dial Before You Dig Vic/Tas Dial Before You Dig NSW & ACT Dial Before You Dig Queensland Dial Before You Dig SA/NT
02.01.2022 50mm gas main hit in Ballarat, because contractor trusted plans they had and did not dig down to confirm if the gas main was really there or not.
02.01.2022 It's been a few years since I watched the block, so thank you Dial Before You Dig NSW & ACT for sharing this video. Those of you that have been following us for a while you will know that I like to try and educate and give insight, to underground services, when and where I can, and this clip from the Block gives us that opportunity once again. So, a couple points about this one. Firstly old mate from the block (sorry I don't know the contestant's names) kept referring to it... as a gas main. No, it's actually not a gas main. Its a gas service. Gas mains are the pipes in the street. Gas services are the pipes that run the gas from the main to the house. Did you notice there was no trace wire laid with the pipe? The pipe itself is plastic, so what they should do when they instal the pipe is run a trace wire with it. The reason you should run a trace wire is so that locators like us, can come along and locate the pipe in the future, just in case anyone wants to do any digging in the front of the property and needs to know where the gas pipe it. Say for example, if they want to instal a new front fence, or need to replace some stormwater pipes, or hey, maybe even want to dig down and remove a tree hahaha. Luckily these guys dug by hand, so they did not damage the pipe when digging around the tree, but if they were using an excavator as the majority of people would use, then they would have surely hit the gas pipe and caused a major incident on site. Lastly, I don't like the technique they used to try and dislodge the pipe from the tree. Yes, being plastic means the pipe is more flexible than say a copper or galvanised pipe, but with the weight of the tree if the pipe was tangled in the roots it still could have caused damage to it when the tree came down. What they would have been better of doing is using hydro excavation to dig around the pipe under the tree, this way they would know for sure it was not tangled up and would be safe to pull the tree down. In fact, using non destructive digging to remove palm trees is actually a very common practice and it's disappointing to see they did not do it here . Although let's be honest, there have been many situations that we have seen shown on the block over the years that do not comply with best OHS practices.
02.01.2022 This video was taken last year, but we never ended up posting online, as we only got to film half the job. The idea was to do a conclusion at the end showing what we found, but unfortunately, we didn’t get any footage on the day the truck was out there exposing all the services so the video just archived. However, I just watched it, and I’m thinking it is still worth posting as it does show a great example of water pipes that might look to be copper or gal, but in fact, once they go underground they are plastic and can't be located with a cable and pipe locator. And the video shows that even though they are plastic, we do still have other methods we can use to try and locate these pipe, despite them traditionally being not locatable.
02.01.2022 An optic fibre got hit in South Australia today and tonight Western Australians (that are with Aussie Broadband) have no internet!!! If your job involves you doing any form of mechanical excavation, always always always get Dial Before You Dig plans.
01.01.2022 Dial Before You Dig has now been around for over 20 years and those that work in the construction industry and use DBYD, have a pretty good understanding of how it all works and what you can expect from Dial Before You Dig. However, the average homeowners, may possibly only ever need to use the Dial Before You Dig service once or twice in their life. The majority of them will not realise that not every underground pipe and cable is shown on the DBYD plans. They may also be v...ery surprised to see that, say for example gas plan, will so the gas main in the street but not show the gas service going to the meter. Or show the gas pipe that goes from the meter to the house. In this video, we went out to a site to locate an Optus cable. The Optus cable was well outside the area of works, but luckily we investigated a bit more about what works they were actually planning on doing and once we saw there they were digging we realised, whilst the Optus was nowhere near there works, there could quite possibly have been several other services that were actually going to be within the area of works and could have been damaged. The homeowner did not know about these because they did not show up on the Dial Before You Dig plan. Guess we, well more so he, was just lucky the Optus plan looked like the cable was close to his works, so he got us to come out and check it out. If the Optus DBYD plan did not show this, then possibly they would have gone ahead and done the works and maybe hit one or more of the underground services.
