24.01.2022 If we're going to do better in the future, this needs to change. Insecure work is a superspreader.

24.01.2022 Workers have been calling for this for months - the Morrison Government needs to listen and act before it's too late. We need paid pandemic leave for all workers, NOW. Join us in demanding change: https://www.australianunions.org.au/paid_pandemic_leave

23.01.2022 Thanks to VAHPA Assistant Secretary Andrew Hewat for calling this out. Over 100 Healthcare Workers infected again today = 106 new cases from a total of 278. While the overall numbers are thankfully coming down, HCWs are still getting injured at work. That takes the total tally to 2,073 since the pandemic began. More than 2,000! That means 38% of today's infections are HCWs. The government is not acknowledging or accepting that these are workplace infections. You can't fix a problem until you accept you have one.

23.01.2022 For my new trackies. For the kids' craft supplies. For the letters from grandma and pop. Our posties are out doing a heroic job for Victorians. Our reliance on mail has never been greater, while at the same time hard working posties face attacks from their employers at Australia Post, trying to make cuts to the network! As workers we extend our solidarity and gratitude to the members of the mighty Communication Workers Union. Join them in sending Federal politicians a message to keep Australia Post running strong! https://postalpandemic.com.au/ Communication Workers Union National Office

23.01.2022 All welcome. Sustainability is the way forward

20.01.2022 CPSU welcomes reports this morning that the government has decided to save the Geelong tax office. Three months ago, Geelong tax office workers were informed that the ATO was proposing to close its Geelong office and send 120 jobs to Melbourne. Knowing how important good secure jobs are to regional communities CPSU members lobbied all sides of politics, including meetings with federal and state politicians, approached local government and launched a petition to save their jobs. There is power in union.

19.01.2022 Excellent analysis of Neo Liberalsim and it's impact on coronavirus transmission. Well worth a read Neoliberalism hasn’t just undermined the quality of specific sectors like aged care and security but, by undermining the centrality of secure jobs that come with sick leave, career leave and annual leave, it has undermined the foundations of the modern welfare state that Australia spent the 20th century building. https://www.theguardian.com//the-spread-of-coronavirus-is-

18.01.2022 Social And Community Services workers won a landmark Equal Pay campaign in 2012, and the Federal Govt needs to commit to funding their share of the pay rise in October's budget and not leave the sector with a nearly $600 million funding short fall. SACS workers support the most vulnerable members of our community through difficult and challenging times, and this year alone have done so through floods, fires, droughts and a global pandemic. Please sign and share the petition ...and join the campaign to Save Equal Pay Missed the lunch time SACS Mass Meeting today on the importance of Saving Equal Pay? What can you do? Step 1. Join the ASU! Already a member? Ask a co-worker www.asu.asn.au/asujoin Step 2. Sign the petition: saveequalpay.com/ Step 3. Hold a (virtual) meeting - PM us here to follow up Why? 12, 000 jobs at risk, gender pay gap needs closing not widening, and more! 15.01.2022 Shame on the Federal Government for attacking our superannuation guarantee! Particularly at a time when many working people have already withdrawn super to make ends meet during the pandemic!

13.01.2022 Over a million people are now out of work. It’s the first time its ever gone over 1 million. Our economy is in crisis and it will only get worse without bold Go...vernment action. We need action to create jobs and rebuild our economy. We need a National Economic Reconstruction Plan. Why doesn’t the Government have one? We've got a plan to get Australia back on its feet. 13.01.2022 Excellent article exposing casualised, low paid work In the coronavirus-ravaged northern and western suburbs, the rate of casual employment is between 25 and 35 per cent, the SGS analysis shows, with a particular peak in the hard-hit outer west. ACTU secretary Sally McManus tells The Sunday Age and The Sun-Herald the virus found a weakness there.... It was the contracting out model in the quarantine area, and it’s spread in areas where there’s a higher level of insecurity, she says. Ms McManus notes a similar pattern overseas. The United States provides a graphic example of where poorer people, in particular minorities, are much more likely to die. One of the keys to understanding poor pay and conditions in aged care is gender. Upwards of 90 per cent of aged care workers in both residential and home care are women and, according to RMIT University’s Professor Sara Charlesworth, their wages are demeaning. We undervalue this work because it looks like the kind of work women have traditionally done for free, she says.

12.01.2022 Utter shame on these Geelong businesses. Article text in the comments section The Fair Work Ombudsman probed Geelong businesses that typically hire high numbers of university students such as retail, cafes and restaurants, and fast food or takeaway outlets, located across suburbs near the city’s tertiary institutions. The audits, held between May 2019 and March 2020, found that 102 businesses (77 per cent) failed to comply with workplace laws, with more than half (52 per cent...) of those both underpaying staff and breaching pay slip or record-keeping obligations. https://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au//7f47c2238a27bfff4e55

08.01.2022 It will be 50 years tomorrow since Australia's worst industrial fatality. When the West Gate Bridge collapsed on October 15, 1970, it took the lives of 35 worke...rs with it. Dozens more were scarred for life by a tragedy that can never be forgotten. Tomorrow, building sites across our city will halt work at 11.50am to pay tribute to those we lost as a result of builders' negligence. We will also be sharing a special live-streamed memorial, via the Victorian Trades Hall Council. We hope that you will join us in honouring the lives of these irreplaceable men. #SafetyIsUnionBusiness

06.01.2022 Workplaces are driving around 80% of new coronavirus transmissions in Victoria. Shame, shame, shame on VicRoads and all employers who fail to take appropriate steps to protect their staff. People who visited the VicRoads Geelong customer service centre on two dates in July are being advised to monitor their health after a staff member tested positive for coronavirus. It comes as the Australian Services Union has slammed VicRoads for delays installing sneeze guards to shield w...orkers amid the coronavirus crisis. Anyone who visited the centre on Friday, 24 July and Monday, 27 July is advised to monitor their health and get tested if they feel unwell.

06.01.2022 Early Education and Care is a vital service for families and children, yet their workers are underpaid and undervalued, and they were kicked off JobKeeper weeks ago. Sign the petition to demand a wage guarantee for Early Educators. Today Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced that as of Thursday, most early childhood services in Melbourne will close, except for children of essential workers and vulnerable children. Educators like Shelley have already lost the support of J...obKeeper. Now educators in Victoria are faced with no guarantee of income for at least the next 6 weeks. It is NOT GOOD ENOUGH. SIGN THE PETITION to demand that the State and Federal Governments immediately guarantee educators’ wages during Stage 4 of lockdown! https://uwu.org.au/vicstage4

04.01.2022 Devastating news - our condolences and solidarity to all A 51-year-old man, who worked at Golden Farms in Breakwater for more than 15 years, has died after falling ill with coronavirus. The news of the Newcomb man's death came as workers returned to the Turosi owned processing plant for the first time since it was closed by the Department of Health and Human Services on July 28. Turosi chief executive officer Phil Hand said all employees were deeply saddened by the death of a... long-term employee. He had worked at Turosi for over fifteen years and was a valued member of the Geelong team. He was 51 years old, Mr Hand said. We were informed he had tested positive for COVID-19 and of his passing by Barwon Health, late yesterday." Mr Hand said Turosi will work with his family to provide what support it can through this very difficult time. Our sincere sympathy goes out to his family and friends, Mr Hand said. Out of respect for them, we will not comment further at this time. The DHHS said on Sunday 40 cases are now linked to the site. Mr Hand said the company was working Barwon Health, the DHHS and WorkSafe Victoria and taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of the workforce. See more
