24.01.2022 Bees are essential for the pollination of up to 65% of our agricultural produce. The two simple and mandatory steps of registering as a beekeeper and recording ...your biosecurity activities will help protect Victoria’s apiary industry and the agricultural industries reliant on honey bee pollination. The beekeeper diary in the BeeMAX beekeeper registration and surveillance database lets beekeepers easily record all biosecurity observations and activities in one central place, such as pest and disease inspections, swarm collection data and any biosecurity training completed. This will facilitate real-time analysis of data to identify significant trends and risks to Victoria’s $17.5 million apiary industry and improve our ability to respond to an exotic honey bee pest or disease incursion. For the International Year of Plant Health we are shining the spotlight on the many ways to help protect plant life in the world of agriculture: planthealthyear.org.au/ Follow this link for more info including registering as a beekeeper and for BeeMAX: agriculture.vic.gov.au//honey-bees/beekeeping-for-beginners #IYPH2020

21.01.2022 https://mailchi.mp/3c62efee7248/ahbic-biosecurity-update On Sunday 1 November, 2020 a container was unloaded from an international vessel at Brisbane port and there was an Apis florea (red dwarf honey bee or dwarf honey bee) nest on the container. Examination of the bees have found no external mites.
19.01.2022 This is a donation many beekeepers would love to receive - consider supporting the conference and hope your name is drawn
18.01.2022 What keeps an Australian beekeeper awake at night? Varroa mites.......... Want to learn more about the biosecurity program in place to protect our honey bee i...ndustry? We've got a fantasitc podcast for you to listen to tonight. Follow the link below for an informative overview of the risks exotic pests, mites and diseases could have on our Australian honey bee industry and the subsequent industries dependent on honey bees for pollination of health food. This is a great podcast produced by our friends at Biosecurity Queensland. We thank them for making this educational overview to assist beekeepers both old and new to ensure they meet their biosecurity obligations. With the exponential increase in hobby beekeeping recently, it is absolutely critical every beekeeper and hive is registered with Biosecurity Queensland. If you've got any questions about registering your hive or becoming a new beekeeper, please contact the Queensland Department of Agriculture on 13 25 23. Bee biosecurity is everyone's business. #healthybeesneedhealthytrees #qbabees #beesecurityisfoodsecurity #queenslandbeekeepers #eatqld #beesneedtrees #biosecurityqueensland

15.01.2022 Lets face it there are more days and weeks of celebrating differnt things than there are days on the claendar. And Australian Pollinator Week is another event t...hat takes place as a spotlight on what we can engage with every other day and or week of the year. So while pollinator week took place a couple of weeks ago, there are still events going on that help inform and continue to raise awareness about our pollinators and their role in our lives, as share house partners of the landscapes where our homes, workplaces and lives carry on. Theres so many ways we can connect with our pollinators from native bees, native wasps, hover flies, honey bees, microbats, butterflies, moths and the list goes on. So I am super happy to be able to share some time with a very active advocate for pollinators in Australia Fiona Chambers from Wheen Bee Foundation. As part of the ongoing work of Rotary for Bees Fiona and I will be presenting as part of Your Garden - Our Future a free online talk this Thursday. Its a chance for us to look and share lots of information for everyone from children and families to individuals through all generations explaining not just the importance of our pollinators but ways that you/we all can help their ongoing survival, regeneration and sustainable growth in all our ecosystems. 15.01.2022 Here's some good advice when buying nucs:
14.01.2022 Message from AHBIC: avoid buying or using imported beeswax.
13.01.2022 Advice from the VAA: The VAA has been working with Governments during the current COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that our interests are considered as part of any movement restrictions and exemptions that apply to individuals and businesses. I have been able to gain some clarity around beekeepers being able to attend their hives for husbandry purposes in areas currently subject to stage 3 and 4 movement restrictions. The link below takes you directly to the relevant web page whi...ch has a number of frequently asked questions (FAQ’s). Where the FAQ indicates that you need to provide evidence about your animals/insects, I suggest that you carry a copy (both hard copy and electronic) of your beekeeper registration with you in the event of you being spot checked by authorities. For current information please check the relevant Victorian and the AHBIC websites as they hold considerable amounts of relevant information for you and your business. As the COVID-19 response continues, I will continue to represent the VAA and our interests at the relevant industry forums being hosted by Agriculture Victoria.ou and your business. Kind regards, Phil McPherson, President VAA Inc
