25.01.2022 Geelong Canoe Club landing upgrade commencing soon Dear members,... We are pleased to advise that the landing upgrade works will commence towards the end of this month. At this stage, the broad completion timeframe is before Christmas, 2020. Duing this time, parts of the landing will not be accessible and there will be some time where the entire landing will not be accessible. We are lucky that we have an alternate landing about 150m upstream. A nice easy walk along the river bank. Regards, GCC Committee

22.01.2022 Paddle Update It is exciting news to see people back paddling even though the days are getter shorter and the weather cooler. After a meeting with Paddle Vic it was good to hear how other Clubs are managing and that they are slowly getting back to paddling in groups. We like to welcome all members back to the Club. Remember to ensure that you sign in and out, clean all the touch points as well as your equipment. Sanitizer, wipes and buckets are provided for you to do this. Th...e sign in sheet which is compulsory (government regulation) is located as you exit the door on the river side of the building. The toilets are now open but unfortunately not the showers. At this stage we plan to have introductory sessions back on the calendar very soon so watch this space. We request that members are not permitted to bring guests and use the club equipment without completing the appropriate paperwork.

22.01.2022 GOOD NEWS River Users IMPORTANT NOTICE BARWON RIVER THROUGH GEELONG BOATING FACILITIES CLOSED TO RECREATIONAL USE... Boating facilities in the Barwon River through Geelong precinct are closed to recreational use. Emergency or commercial use is permitted. Victorias Chief Health Officer has provided advice that canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, rowing and surf skiing, as long as physical distancing is complied with and people dont travel large distances to do them. Recreational fishing and boating are not permitted. For more information visit betterboating.vic.gov.au/news/covid19-boatramp-closures/. Victoria is under Stage 3 restrictions to combat the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. 20.01.2022 Yesterday was absolutely beautiful for a paddle on the river. There was a gentle breeze to keep you cool and check that you were working on the way back from Queens Park bridge. The prediction was rain and wind but it was great out there. Maybe next time Saturday paddlers.

20.01.2022 Canoe Landing upgrade project. The recent and predicted rainfall will and has had an impact on the Canoe Landing upgrade project. The catchment currently saturated and Lal Lal Reservoir spilling over, it is predicted that the river will easily rise again with any rain we may get between now and the end of December. It is unlikely that a start on the project will be made before Christmas.... The entire landing was under water again this week, and with the probability that it will rain again between now and December, it is likely that a start on the project will not be made until January 2020. January 2020 is now the likely start date, Rationale: - That time of year is going to be more likely to be dry enough to complete the work efficiently and avoid unnecessary disturbance. - The earth works and saturated banks are an issue due to the contamination, with cost and safety implications if not done at an appropriate time. - Contractors are back at work after Australia Day The CCMA will keep track of conditions and make a start if possible. However it is now more realistic that work on site will begin at the end of January 2021 and be completed by March 2021.

20.01.2022 Welcome to our new member Mac

19.01.2022 Update Re Landing at Geelong Canoe Club. Hi all, Just a gentle reminder to continue to make sure that your members are aware of the rules and zonings for activities on the river. Don’t hesitate to contact the CCMA if you require any clarification.... Barwon Water have asked us to re-iterate the Barwon Aqueduct Bridge as it is important for managing public safety. This structure crosses the river approximately 1.5km downstream of Breakwater road. It is in a state of degradation and is an unacceptable risk with concrete falling from it. Due to this no one is permitted to pass underneath the structure at any time. This is all clearly marked out with an on-water barrier and fencing around the entire aqueduct. There are also signs at Breakwater next to the river. Barwon Water is currently planning the removal of four spans of the aqueduct so that there can be access past in future via the river. 14.01.2022 The weather did not stop someone from heading out for a paddle yesterday. The kayak wheels were a giveaway. Paddling on the Barwon river is such a good place to be to unwind and relax.

13.01.2022 Hi Everyone We hope that you are all travelling ok but staying at home. It has been frustrating trying to understand the reasoning behind the closure of facilities which never really sees physical distancing as an issue. The message is loud and clear in Victoria although not shared by those in other states. The Victorian government reasoning is that it is harder to rescue and treat someone who has an accident on the water compared to having an accident on the land. We there...fore have had to close the Club and ask people if they wish to remove their craft to do so by Friday April 18th. The message from Paddle Vic is STAY AT HOME. Do NOT go paddling. All waterway infrastructure closed Recreational Boating includes Canoeing / Kayaking => More information. Updated April 9th 1pm. Please be aware that all waterways are closed under the Marine Boating Authority. I guess you just need to stay on land and run, walk or ride a bike. Maybe someone could create a kayak on wheels propelled by a type of paddle.

11.01.2022 Message from CCMA You will most likely be aware that the Barwon is experiencing a minor flood at the moment. Currently some key areas have been closed along the Barwon River due to the river rising, these are:... Belmont Common Boat Ramp Breakwater Road car park Queenspark car park There are various areas of the walking track that are quite wet and slippery at the moment so we advise to take care, especially given the amount of pedestrian traffic currently. In addition to this there will be various fixtures submerged, such as decks and other features, so its advised not to access through inundated areas. As the water subsides CCMA will endeavour to clean up and maintain the reserve, in our area of management, as quickly as possible.

10.01.2022 Level 2 closed for cleaning 22nd and 23rd July 2020 Dear members,... All unclaimed craft were photographed and the photos will be posted soon for people to claim their craft. 06.01.2022 To River User Groups Please be advised that the Barwon River is currently experiencing high levels of blue-green algae. This has been picked up in water sampling from 30/01/2020. High levels of toxic blue green algae have been found around Shannon Avenue Bridge (Marnockvale area) and it appears it is moving downstream based on sample results. The CCMA advises that people and their pets should avoid contact with the water. Contact with blue-green algae can cause skin rashes, e...ye and ear infections, vomiting and diarrhoea, mouth ulcers, sore throat and asthma symptoms. We will continue to monitor this situation and advise of any changes. Please dont hesitate to get in contact with me if you have any questions. 05.01.2022 Update re Landing from CCMA The plan is we will begin concrete prep Monday/Tuesday next week of the multi-use improved access section (concrete area). This means that the exclusion fencing will encroach further across to the concrete join mark. There will still be an access point beside the existing large craft roller. This can still be used if people wish. Until the FRP deck side is completely finished we will keep that closed out.

05.01.2022 Geelong Canoe Club carpark will not be accessible to members this Friday January 29th 2021 from 10.30 till late afternoon. The Club will still be open, however, you will need to park on the street. My apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.

05.01.2022 Everyday is a good day for a paddle but just remember to wear a face covering when in the storage area and to and from the river. Arnie and Blake never miss an opportunity.
