24.01.2022 The phrase The cat is out of the bag, refers to the cat onine tails, an instrument of punishment once used in Victorian colonial gaols. The instrument was stored in a red felt bag, and a convict who flagellated (whipped) a fellow convict would be "letting the cat out of the bag". Head on down to the Old Geelong Gaol Museum to see a cat onine tails on display. Open every day these school holidays between 1pm and 4pm.

10.01.2022 Exciting New Exhibition at the Geelong Gaol!! SAGA BEHIND THE ARMOUR The myths associated with outlaws or ‘social bandits’ are important elements of national identity in many countries around the world from Robin Hood to Jesse James these names resonate to the working-class masses.... Ned Kelly was convicted of murder, assault, theft and armed robbery over his brief criminal career, but his crimes were seen as acts of resistance against Australia’s British colonial rulers. A man of the people, speaking out loudly against a colonial government that discriminated against the poor and immigrant settlers. Long after his death, Ned Kelly lives on in Australian culture through art, books, films and music, ensuring his position as a symbol of Australian identity. Either love him or hate him one can’t deny that Ned Kelly is one of the most recognisable figures in Australian history. The Saga Behind the Armour is an exhibition that brings to life the story of the Ned Kelly and his Gang though the eyes of the Geelong people involved in the story. Geelong Gaol Museum is open on Saturday and Sundays from 1pm to 4pm. From Boxing Day to the 31st of January the museum will be open daily between 12pm - 5pm.

09.01.2022 Prison Mug Shoots The system of taking photographic likenesses of prisoners at the Pentridge Prison is stated to have proved of great assistance to the police department in detecting crime. ... The system was commenced at Pentridge in 1872, and since then one of the officials who had a slight knowledge of the art, with the assistance of a prisoner had taken nearly 7000 pictures in the first two years. Each male prisoner is photographed at least once when he entered Pentridge, and in some cases male prisoners were shaven and a second photos was taken. Duplicates of the photos were sent to all parts Victoria and the adjacent colonies to help in the detection of fugitives. Considered too expensive in 1874, to employ an official entirely for the purpose, and as constant employment could not be provided in the future only photos were taken at Pentridge gaol. A photographer was later appointed, who will visit Pentridge, Melbourne and Geelong Gaols twice in the week, and the hulks at Williamstown once. The prisoner was seated and positioned to capture the prisoners full face and profile in a single shot. Some times showing their hands to reveal any distinguishing characteristics such as tattoos, birthmarks or even missing fingers. Im later years prisoner were photographed standing. Sadly due to the cost, photos of convicted prisoner where not taken in all Victorian colonial gaols. Geelong Gaol Museum is open every day these school holidays between 1pm and 4pm
