23.01.2022 #waybackWednesday A quick look back at the 2019 Bupa Australia VNL GRAND FINAL. Its so hard to believe that this week, six VNL teams would be preparing to play in the 2020 VNL Grand Final. Eighteen weeks of preliminary rounds, 2 weeks of finals leading to the biggest game of the year. ... 2019 was a history making year for the Geelong Netball Club. It had taken years to build a strong club culture, a culture led by a brilliant coaching team in Gerard Murphy, Melanie Savage and Bec Faulmann. A culture that supported everyone to be their best and reach their potential, whatever that might be. Previous years the 19/Under and Division 1 teams had both tasted VNL Grand Final success. Many players and coaches had received individual accolades, but a Cougars Championship side had never won a premiership. Until 2019 that is. DIVISION 1 Geelong Cougars (45) defeated by Boroondara Express (46). *this was an absolute nail biter, Div 1 played their hearts out. Seeing Mel Bragg and Allie Smith progress through to Suncorp Super Netball is really wonderful and we are so happy and proud of them. We are excited to see Poppy Douglas, Olivia Taylor and Zara Walters move up into the open squad for the 2021 season. Ruby Pekin-Schlicht returns from overseas and Zanna Woods and Ally O’Connor will make a very welcome return from injury and illness. We’re just happy to get everyone back together at the end of January, and we’ll aim for all players to get to their best. It’s going to be an exciting year, hopefully without too much disruption. Tess Campigli Lily Eldridge Kiahna Fallon Indya Forde Isabelle Grapsas Tegan Line Ella Rees Emma Stacey Charlotte Todd Sharni Van Doren Brooke Wilson Selections were finalised at the Geelong Cougars trials which concluded mid-December. Eliza Cahill and Brooke Wilson are the only two returning players from the 2019 VNL season. The Geelong Netball Club's 'Flyers Junior Development Program' is proving to be a successful pathway with Eliza Cahill, Tess Campigli, Lily Eldridge, Kiahna Fallon, Isabelle Grapsas, Tegan Line, Ella Rees and Sharni Van Doren all representing Flyers in past seasons. Indya Forde Ella Rees, Emma Stacey and Charlotte Todd hail from Western Victoria. Their selection will help to shine a spotlight on the talented athletes from Regional Victoria. 19/Under coach, Damian Stephenson is eager to finally see the players take the court after a very long 2020. I think we’ve got a really strong squad with some very talented new players joining us. I’m super keen to get started because I think we’re going to have a great year.
