24.01.2022 Lazarus House is where Geelongs most vulnerable and homeless can go for a warm meal, a friendly chat, a shower and to clean their clothes, five days a week. Al...ly Wimmer had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Nolan of the Lazarus Community Centre. Michael is one of last years Westfield Geelongs Local Heroes. Heres why: Michael, a former Priest, has an amazing presence and warmth that is beyond goodness. He led the team that opened Lazarus House in late 2017. He insists The tireless effort of many supporting him allowed a wonderful collaboration and outcome. Three Geelong churches came together with Geelong Rotary Club, to secure the location, within the Geelong gaol. Michael, in his inclusive manner, mentions all who have helped from those working to provide food, those serving and assisting, to Geelong Connected Communities. He tells the story of the carpet received from the Geelong Cats and the woman who dealt with council and regulations enabling it to be laid for the benefit of the centre. He praises Rotary who painted and supported the project every step of the way, to Salvo Connect and the Neami team for providing showers for the homeless. We witnessed clients dozing on couches after a hearty warm meal in front of heaters ablaze, in a very comfortable setting. A lot more comfortable than the streets on a cold winters day. 85% of clients are homeless men and it is not in their makeup to ask for assistance, the Centre is their safe place. Michaels history in pastoral care from Norlane to Broadmeadows has given him an insight in to how it could happen to anyone and how life can be, at times, harsh. As a Geelong boy he is proud of how Geelong comes together for football, for crisis and for care. He and long time colleague, Wendy also worked at Wesley Uniting Church with the Life Enrichment Program assisting victims of domestic violence, grief, bereavement groups and womens groups for empowerment. At the time of the interview, the Centre had been open 11 days since the easing of Covid19 restrictions and 217 people had come through for a hearty meal and a safe place. Everyone has a different story and many are very lonely or feel abandoned. Michael is a widow and has two adult sons and one daughter. Hes blessed with a grandchild and one on the way. His marriage gave him much joy, he and his wife shared many adventures in their 10 years together, which he admits was too short a time. Michael cooks for the centre on his days off and always has time to chat as he knows every individual their issues, their needs and has an open non-judgemental approach. The food is so healthy, warm and wholesome. Michael, a youthful 81, is a wonderful community leader. He is a real-life hero, a collaborator of endless grace and goodness whose desire is to create equality and a better life for all. He is a source of great love and blessing for the neediest in Geelong. Ally and Jack Weiler established a social enterprise, called of Blooms2Leaf, to support Geelong Homeless. Blooms2Leafs little fund arrived at a good time for Lazarus House as many sources of assistance have dried up due to the current environment. Donations: money, toiletries, clothes, especially warm socks are welcome. Story: Ally Wimmer. Photo: supplied

20.01.2022 Throughout life we cross challenging bridges, which can be small but mighty or long and tiring. However big or small, all challenges are difficult in their own ...individual way and effect each person differently. Every week we walk with our friends as they go through a challenging time in their life, which often leads to loneliness and isolation. It's not always about what items we can offer them, but more so about the conversations we have and the emotional support we can therefore provide. Like our new friend pictured in these photos, people who are newly homeless often don't know where to begin in getting support. Having this opportunity to assist, we are able to provide our phone numbers and numbers linked to support services, a map showing where to get free meals in the Geelong region and the location of Salvo support services. We have such an important role in building relationships with those less fortunate and linking them to services. We hope our efforts can help even in the smallest way. See more

20.01.2022 A TROPHY OF GRACE - POLL COTT (40 years in and out of prison and 257 Convictions) ..... Transported to Australia at the age of 16, Mary Mcguires life may have... got back onto track after her marriage Jack Cott, but the death of her only baby. Her grief turned her to drunkedness and violence. She threatened and attacked all who confronted her. Mary "Poll Cott took what she wanted from shops and anyone attempting to stop her would receive a blow to the head from a lemonade bottle lethally wielded in an old sock! On 18 May 1885 Poll Cott was armed with a pair of scissors and intent on doing bodily harm to a railway porter at Maitland West, when Captain William Rundle stopped her and invited her to his home for lunch. A bemused Poll accepted, and immediately devised how she would steal from her host. Given a bed for the night, Poll Cott left it to suss out the place and was rocked when she overheard Captain and Mrs Rundle, with tears in their eyes, praying for her ..... At midnight Poll Cott was on her knees beside the Rundles, where she found Christ. At last finding peace, she lived a quiet Christian life for years until her restful death. See more

18.01.2022 One of the biggest privileges we have each week, is to speak into the lives of so many and give them hope and support. The man in this photo lost his mother som...e time ago, but the pain from this loss still deeply effects him with each passing year. It was no coincidence that our paths crossed one night. While sharing a coffee, he opened up to us and allowed us into his world for a short while. While we didnt have all the answers, we were able to listen, encourage and empathise with him and his situation as he poured out his heart to us. We will always remember that night and will use this encounter as we have with so many others to encourage our efforts. We will continue to spread the message of hope to many others in challenging and heartbreaking situations. Encounters like this is the reason we love what we do each week and we thank you for supporting our efforts.

17.01.2022 It was a pleasure today to officially open 25 new social housing units right here in Grovedale. These units will house vulnerable Victorians in need and provide... a safe place for people to rebuild their lives. The units were built with an $8.1 million investment from the Andrews Government, on land provided by the The Salvation Army - Victoria to be managed and operated by Salvation Army Housing Victoria. Thank you to the Salvation Army for their partnership on this important project. I look forward to the Andrews Government working with community organisations to deliver even more social and public housing to fuel our economic recovery. #SocialHousing #PublicHousing
