18.01.2022 The adorable Bambi and her mum Jessica visited the clinic today for Bambi’s vaccination. Vaccinations can help protect pets against deadly diseases. They help the body create antibodies to fight viruses and bacteria that pets may come in contact with. Vaccines can help keep pets from contracting diseases particularly those that can be fatal. Vaccination occurs in a series of vaccines to ensure the puppies receive high levels of immunity.... Common diseases that can be prevented by vaccination: Parvovirus - Deadly virus that causes bloody diarrhoea and occasionally heart disease in puppies Distemper - Deadly virus that causes a variety of signs including coughing, diarrhoea, seizures, blindness Hepatitis - Virus that causes permanent damage to the liver Kennel cough (Bordetella, parainfluenza)- Highly contagious pathogens that cause respiratory disease #vaccinateyourpets

12.01.2022 Ultrasound is a form of medical imaging that uses sound waves to form an image and is the second most common form of medical imaging. When an ultrasound examination is performed, a harmless, high-frequency sound beam is projected into the body of your pet. Ultrasound examinations can be used in addition to radiography. They are useful in detecting abdominal diseases and are often able to provide a diagnosis when radiographs cannot. #ultrasound

10.01.2022 Yesterday we meet the very sweet Salem. Salem visited the clinic after his family noticed he had increased thirst and urination. A blood test revealed Salem was experiencing kidney disease. The kidneys play a vital role in maintaining good health. They are responsible for helping to control blood pressure, regulating chemical balance within the bloodstream, producing necessary hormones and enzymes, ensuring adequate red blood cell production and removing waste products. In k...idney disease, waste products can accumulate in the bloodstream affecting many systems within the body. Although any cat is at risk of kidney disease and failure, it is thought that long hair breeds such as the Persian and Angora and middle-aged to senior cats are more predisposed. Common signs of kidney disease: Increased water consumption Increase urination Weight loss Decreased appetite Vomiting Diarrhoea Bad breath Oral ulceration Salam will spend a couple of days in hospital on intravenous fluids to flush out the waste products from his bloodstream. He will then go home on a prescription diet proven to support the kidneys and we will continue to monitoring his kidney function in the future. #catlife

09.01.2022 () Jane is originally from Drysdale and always wanted to be a veterinarian from a very early age after growing up surrounded by animals. She attended school in Geelong before starting her Veterinary Science studies at the University of Melbourne. After attaining her Veterinary degree in 2000 Jane worked in mixed practice in Bendigo before moving to the UK for seven years. During her time in the UK Jane worked in several locum positions arou...nd England and Wales before taking a job at a busy Veterinary Charity Hospital in London. After Jane married her husband James, they left the UK and moved back to her hometown Geelong and Jane took on a job at the Corio Veterinary Clinic before coming to Highton. Jane and James took over ownership of the Highton Veterinary Clinic in mid-2010. Jane has done postgraduate studies in Small Animal Medicine and has been admitted to the Medicine Chapter of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists. She has also done additional study in small animal surgery with the University of Sydney Post Graduate Foundation course. Jane enjoys both small animal medicine and surgery cases. These days Jane spends more time with their young family than in the consulting room, keeping their tribe of kids out of trouble - Seamus, Niamh, Aislin and Declan - in addition to all of their pets! #GeelongWestVet
