Yesterday on Mornington Island... a tribal elder of the Lardil people Darryl Williams has been charged with unauthorized fire lighting doing an early burn off to manage vegetation on his own land Mornington Island has a proud record of minimal bushfires due to traditional land management. Recent showers make for very slow trickling burns that create wonderful feed for native fauna and good firebreaks for the hot dry spring. Thousands of years of knowledge. He has been coerced into a guilty plea that will be heard in his absence without legal representation.
