21.01.2022 Did you know Inverell used to produce about 80 per cent of the world's sapphires? We've unearthed this 1973 ABC documentary following the booming local sapph...ire industry in northern NSW. Today, most of the world's sapphires come from Madagascar, and the local industry has dwindled to just a few family mines. : Don Sheil | ABC New England North West

18.01.2022 Native Gold can appear in a myriad of ways. Some are unusual like this specimen from Grass Valley, California which almost looks like it needs a haircut!

18.01.2022 Have you ever seen fossilised poo? The right word for this is actually a coprolite. These trace fossils tell us what the animals would have eaten. The examp...les weve provided are from a turtle (brown one) and a crocodile (white one). Why are they two different colours you ask? Crocodiles would have eaten their prey in its entirety, ie bones and all, which turns their poop white, whereas turtles would have eaten a balanced diet, more focused on the healthier fresh greens and not a lot of meat, which makes their poop reddy/brown. These coprolites were found in the same deposit and are around 50 million years old. #coprolites #fossilfun #50millionyearoldcoprolite #turtlepoo #crocodilepoo

16.01.2022 The historic village of Hill End has seen boom and bust, the rich gold rush days and then the slow shrinking of its population. But the town is reawakening from the coronavirus lockdown and the sole remaining pub is ready to swing open the doors again. #9Today

15.01.2022 For many years, I have collected and replaced agates in 19th century Scottish silver brooches. My local lapidary society had an annual jewellery competition for... members and I made this sterling silver brooch with carefully matched pieces of Botswana Agate, that I cut to a custom made template, in the style of some Victorian Scottish pieces. 10.01.2022 BEGINNERS LUCK: HAVE YOU EVER STUMBLED ACROSS BURIED TREASURE? When Kerry and Peter Leemon moved to Dargo two years ago to take over the Dargo General Store, K...erry was looking for an outdoor hobby that would make her explore the local area, learn about local history and get out in the sunshine. Peter bought her a cheap a metal detector for a birthday present and one afternoon in March 2019, the couple decided to go for a drive up to Collins Flat. We decided to go on a bit of a bush walk this day. We had no idea what we were doing, but decided to walk along the high terrain and then the detector started beeping, says Kerry. After digging around to investigate, the couple came across a small pill bottle caked in mud and dirt. Curious as to why the bottle was beeping, Kerry dusted bottle, which soon revealed a lucky surprise! I started scratching the bottle and all these gold flecks were falling out of it, says Kerry. As it turned out the bottle contained around $15,000 dollars worth of gold (in todays value), that belonged to a miner by the name of John Collins, who had passed away in 1878. It was common for miners to hide their stash underground during the Gold Rush. Dargo was a popular stopover for miners heading to the Goldfields of Grant. On a return trip to Collins Flat, Kerry would later discover a small tin containing coins and a few pound notes that belonged to Mr Collins. She hasnt encountered any further gold finds since her beginners luck, but has since become hooked on the her new found hobby; the history, the wilderness, the exercise and the eternal promise of finding more buried treasure!
