25.01.2022 How do sperm swim? Well, for centuries, weve all believed that sperm swim through the female reproductive tract by lashing their tails from side to side, rather like eels. BUT ... scientists using state-of-the-art 3D microscopy, ultra-high speed photography and mathematics have smashed that theory, saying that in fact, another animal analogy is more apt: sperm are more like playful otters corkscrewing through water.... The discovery reveals that the sperm tail is, in fact, wonky and wiggles on only one side. This uneven stroke puts the sperm at risk of swimming in circles, which is avoided through a clever adaptation. #sperm #malefertility #maleinfertility #fertility #infertility #IVF #ICSI #andrology

22.01.2022 #IVFFirsts - Genea is the home of many of the worlds IVF advances. Incubators are a vital element of fertility treatment, theyre the equivalent of a humidicrib for your embryos. Before our sister clinic Genea developed our current incubator, Geri, their embryologists actually helped develop one of the first mini incubators back in the 1990s. It simulated the natural environment of human fallopian tubes by using low oxygen levels and introducing just the right amount of ca...rbon dioxide to help embryos grow. Known as MINCs, these incubators also maintained the optimal temperature to reduce stress on the embryo and theyre still in use in many Australian clinics. Weve moved on and now only culture patients embryos in the latest time-lapse incubator, Geri. Once inside the incubators, precious embryos are nurtured and supported by culture medium. Genea has also been developing and using its own culture medium for more than two decades. Exclusive to Genea in Australia and used by more than 600 clinics around the world, our experience in culture medium development is world leading. More recently, we have developed and released a continuous culture medium which means that embryos can develop undisturbed in the same liquid for the five or six days they spend in our labs. Its made in a specialised lab right here in our Sydney headquarters. #fertility #infertility #IVF #worldleaders #science #fertilityscience #TTC
22.01.2022 #IVFFirsts - Genea Elements IVF is the home of many of the worlds IVF advances. Did you know that our sister clinic Genea was the first clinic in Australia to develop and routinely replace the old slow freezing method for embryos and eggs with the more efficient and successful vitrification process? Genea then went on to create the worlds first automated vitrification instrument - Gavi - which is exclusive to Genea, Genea Elements and Genea Hollywood clinics in Australia.... Gavi allows all embryos to be cryo-preserved under exactly the same conditions and therefore maximises the opportunity for each embryo to develop into a healthy pregnancy. Genea also ships the Australian-made Gavi to clinics all around the world. #fertility #IVF #infertility #fertilitytreatment #TTC #vitrification #fertilitytreatment #Gavi

19.01.2022 Lets break down the silence around miscarriage once and for all. Were trying to help by amplifying the stories of people who have experienced early pregnancy loss. Why is it that nobody really talks to you about miscarriage when you start trying to get pregnant but as soon as you let people know youve had a miscarriage, many come forward to tell you about the babies theyve lost? 13.01.2022 #NationalScienceWeek In our last scientist profile for the week we talk with Dan. He has a twin role as a Senior Embryologist with Genea Fertility and as a Fertility Laboratory Trainer with Geneas Centre of Excellence for Fertility in Bangkok. As a Senior Embryologist he works in Geneas Kent Street clinic and as a Fertility Laboratory Trainer he educates embryologists and lab directors from around the world in what it takes to run a high quality IVF laboratory and clinic.... Another part of his role is consulting in clinics around South East Asia which involves providing an objective assessment on the things theyre doing well and advice on the things they can improve, ultimately to improve success rates for their patients. Dan says his favourite part of the job is the people: Whether its my fellow embryologists, the nurses, all the supporting staff at Genea its an incredible team we have here. Its also a privilege to be able to combine my embryology knowledge and skills with my passion for teaching and training at the CoE in Bangkok. Not only am I able to pass on Geneas experience and expertise to embryologists from around the world, I always walk away from our courses having learned something new as well. Unquestionably, however, the thing I love most about my job is talking with patients helping them to understand the science behind their infertility and talking them through both the positive and challenging times in their journey brings me immense job satisfaction. #science #scienceweek #scientist #embryology #embryologist #lab #IVF #fertility #infertility #fertilityscience #australianscience

10.01.2022 Pregnancy loss affects 1 in 4 pregnancies. The Pink Elephants Support Network is encouraging women to support each other and be part of the #CircleofSupport so no one suffers alone. It’s believed that when a mother elephant loses her baby, the other elephants stand in a circle around her, allowing her all the time she needs to grieve and mourn. The #circleofsupport collective is the heartbeat of Pink Elephants. Like the elephants who hold space to support a grieving mother, they understand the importance of creating safe spaces. They ensure no one walks the journey alone. #PinkElephants is hoping people will consider pledging to give $14 to empower the circle of support. #pregnancyloss #miscarriage #miscarriagesupport #rightthestory #1in4

02.01.2022 #IVFFirsts Genea Elements IVF is the home of many of the worlds IVF advances. Scientists at our sister clinic Genea, pioneered pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD also known as PGT) and our expertise and techniques are among the best in the world. Many clinics have followed their lead and modeled their approach to embryo biopsy on Geneas. Genea also developed the worlds first clinically applicable blastocyst biopsy method - now used routinely by IVF clinics around the... globe. PGD techniques involve testing embryos created in the IVF process for genetic abnormalities and help detect the best possible embryo for transfer. PGS is used by couples who are older, have experienced recurrent miscarriage or have had a number of failed embryo transfers following IVF treatment. It maximises patients potential to have a baby by reducing miscarriage rates and increasing live birth rates. PGD is often used by couples who dont have an infertility issue but know they carry a serious genetic disorder, with the aim of having a child free of the disease. At Genea and Genea Elements, we have experience with more than 230 genetic diseases as part of our PGD program. These conditions are often disabling, have no prevention, cure or proven treatments, beyond symptomatic care. For example, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, Huntington disease, Hameophilia and Fragile X. PGD also screens for cystic fibrosis which is the most common single gene disorder screened for at Genea and Genea Elements. #geneticscreening #PGD #PGS #IVF #fertility #infertility

01.01.2022 Its #NationalScienceWeek and here at Genea Elements IVF, we believe our innovative approach to fertility science is a vital element of the care and success we offer our patients. To celebrate, we are going to introduce some of our scientists and let them explain in their own words what they do. First up is Steve, a Supervising Scientist in Geneas Molecular Genetics Laboratory. When asked how he describes his role to friends and family, Steve said: Testing of IVF embryos ...for inherited genetic diseases and random chromosome errors, thereby permitting the choice of healthy embryos for implantation. He loves that his job gives him the chance to help people achieve their dream of a healthy baby free of a hereditary disorder. And he likes challenges in his spare time too, taking on rock climbing and mountaineering. #science #scienceweek #scientist #PGD #geneticscreening #molecular #molecularscientist #lab #IVF #fertility #infertility #fertilityscience #australianscience
