07.01.2022 A trip to Adelaide uncovers a long lost family of living relatives. Here in the Library Research Centre at Unley, sometimes our volunteers get to help members and visitors make amazing discoveries. This is one story from our dedicated library volunteer David Westley; the time when a visit by a woman from Sydney unearthed 31 living relatives. A visitor from Sydney came into the library to research her father’s past. Her father had lost contact with his father (her grandfathe...r) when he moved to Sydney from Adelaide with his mother when he was only 4 years old. David helped with her family research for 2 full days helping uncover where her grandfather had been born, where he lived, worked and buried. On her return visit approximately 6 months later, the visitor from Sydney had also brought along her father (as such David got to meet him and hear of all the updates in the woman’s search for her family history). During this trip they were able to spend time visiting several locations that David had helped research including Centennial Park Cemetery and other places associated with her father’s childhood years. Toward the end of the trip her father decided that he would like to see his old childhood home, a 1920’s house located in Edwardstown. On arrival at the house her father wanted to take some photos and they thought it best to ask permission first. Not knowing the owners of the house, her father knocked on the door, which was answered by an elderly gentleman. As her father began to explain why he wanted to take photos of the house the gentleman standing in the door said You are (name removed), G’ Day brother. Living in the 1920’s house was his half-brother. His immediate desire was to phone his sister, the family historian, who had visited her brother and was returning to Balaklava. They made arrangements for all of the family members to reunite a few days later, where they were introduced to another 4 half siblings and 26 nieces and nephews. A great party was had by all. If you would like help researching your family history our experienced library volunteers are here to help and for distance members who cannot visit the library personally we offer a free research service. The Society is continually broadening its collection and maintains a presence both online and at the Unley Research Library Centre with over 7,500,000 records in our online databases and our library catalogue holds in excess of 30,000 items making Genealogy SA the leader in family history research.
