With Filipinos consecutively topping the world in terms of social media use, there is a lot of room for abusers to engage in sexual exploitation of children behind closed doors and in front of a webcam. The Philippines has been dubbed by the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) the global epicenter of the live-stream sexual abuse trade. One in 5 Filipino children are vulnerable to online sexual exploi...tation. The Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of Cybercrime received at least 600,000 cybertips of sexual images of Filipino children in 2018. This is more than a 1,000% increase from the previous 45,645 in 2017. Officials from the DOJ and the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported continuous training of their front liners for prosecuting the evolving crime. But why are so many children in the Philippines still in danger of being sexually exploited online? Unicef and the Child Rights Network reported that a number of factors in the Philippines allow for easy proliferation of online sexual exploitation of children (OSEC). These include: - widespread poverty and resorting to OSEC as a form of income - cheap internet and smartphones - ability to speak English well - wide availability of money remittance centers - prevailing norms of secrecy - lack of parental supervision, sometimes caused by parents having to work abroad - lack of resources to investigate and prosecute perpetrators, and rescue and rehabilitate victims Unicef also noted the alarming involvement of children’s own family members as crime facilitators. OSEC crimes fall under various laws like the anti-child pornography and cybercrime prevention acts, but there is no current all-encompassing law that clearly includes the full range of OSEC activities. Philippine laws related to OSEC have gaps of needed protection. For instance, the anti-child pornography law of 2009 does not explicitly cover livestreaming of sexual content and the role of social media in OSEC. #Generation414 #BeHerChange

22.01.2022 , , , . 16 men have been arrested in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia in recent months on 828 counts of child sexual abuse, production and distribution of child abuse material and bestiality. Australian Deputy Federal Police Commissioner Justine Gough said a child carer and a child football coach were among the defendants. ...Gough added that investigators in Australia had identified a total of 46 victims aged 16 months and no older than 15 years. No child should be exposed to the abuse and violence of people he trusts, whether it be a family member, a childcare worker or a soccer coach, Gough said according to AP. Sadly and heartbreakingly this has been the case for the victims. A total of 18 matters were referred to the U.S., where three men were arrested in connection with child abuse material, the intelligence agency reported. According to Gough, the investigation resulted from a February tip from the U.S. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children warning Australian police that a man from New South Wales had uploaded child abuse material. After the arrest of a 30-year-old man, authorities reportedly searched his computer, revealing an online child abuse network the man was connected to. Gough said that the pedophile community used the regular Internet as well as the dark web to connect and share material. 22.01.2022 : , A crackdown on alleged child sex offenders across the country has resulted in 44 men being charged as cops say the problem is worse than ever. The operation has led to arrests across the country, with a total of 350 charges laid against the alleged offenders.... Assistant Commissioner Lesa Gale said traffic to dark web forums hosting child abuse material had more than doubled since last year, with websites regularly crashing under the demand. In addition to the spike in quantity of the material, its content was turning darker. Along with the increase in reports and the relative size of seizures, Australian law enforcement is witnessing an increase in the severity of exploitation, and a trend towards younger children, including babies. 19.01.2022 In 2018, the Department of Justice Office of Cybercrime received more than 600,000 tips of images and videos of naked, sexualized, and abused Filipino children. This marked a 1,300% increase from the previous year. The woman sitting in the cramped cell was unrepentant. ... It was just my first time. I was just unlucky that I got caught by the police," she said, looking at me squarely, her arms crossed over her chest. Her husband, who was also detained in the cell next to hers, was more subdued but equally unrepentant. We were only trying it out." The couple was detained at the Philippine National Police Headquarters for live streaming and selling video images of their children to foreign nationals through their cellphone. The ease of selling sexual images and videos of children online through a laptop or mobile phone and the convenience of accepting payments through cash remittance services are among the reasons why the online sexual exploitation of children (OSEC) is a booming family business. Ini 2017, the Department received more than 600,000 tips of images and videos of naked, sexualized, and abused Filipino children. This marked a 1,300% increase from the almost 46,000 tips received in the previous year. The couple used their two children ages 12 and 11, a 17-year-old girl who is the live-in partner of one of their older children, and a 15-year-old girl who is the girlfriend of another child in their home-based OSEC business. An 11-month old grandchild who lived with the couple is suspected of being abused too. The couple lived in an area of Manila where OSEC is endemic and is a booming home-based family run business. Neighbors and other residents have become desensitized and even some of the children involved have been groomed by their parents or guardians to view it as a way of making easy money. The government is grappling to curb OSEC in the Philippines, which is deemed as a top global source of sexually explicit content that makes use of children.

Periods of lockdown and isolation have affected us in different ways, and we are beginning to see the impacts on child sexual assault and exploitation in our communities. While some of us are spending more and more time together with those we love, families are under increased stress and children and young people are spending more time connecting with others online, leading to an ...increase in vulnerability to harm. In the US, there has been a 106% increase in reports of suspected child sexual exploitation rising from 983,734 reports in March 2019 to 2,027,520 in the very same month in 2020. In the UK, police are seeing increases in number of reports of online exploitation, with one district noting an increase of 146% in reports from March 2019 compared to March 2020. Here in Australia, the Office of the eSafety Commissioner has seen similar impacts to those in the US and UK since lockdown. From mid-March, there has been a 200% increase in reports of image-based abuse, and an 87% increase in reports of child sexual exploitation online.
