13.01.2022 May is Uveal Melanoma month. Thank you Marissa Wreford for sharing your story to help raise awareness. Most ocular melanoma is sporadic with rare hereditary cases. Each year approximately 7 out of one million individuals are diagnosed with some form of Uveal (Ocular) Melanoma. Around half of those people will develop metastatic disease (Stage IV). Whilst average survival time has increased from 6 months to three years since my diagnosis in 2017, metastatic uveal melanoma st...ill has a 5 year survival rate of just 15%. The best chance of survival is early detection. This May do something for your health, and the health of your eyes - a very underrated, yet essential, sensory organ. So remember to go and get a dilated eye exam. A standard eye checkup with your optometrist may not show small changes, which when found early can make a big difference. Don't take your eyes for granted. Don't think that wearing sunglasses or eating "organic foods" and general healthy choices will spare you or someone you love from this disease. Research regarding lifestyle risks are still to this day inconclusive. Your best chance is, and likely always will be, early detection. So this May ask specifically for a DILATED eye exam. Then continue to do this every May. Use Ocular Melanoma Month as a reminder to give your eyes some love. See more

12.01.2022 So what exactly is a variant in a chromosome? Chromosomes naturally have variation its part of what makes us all different. Copy number variants or CNV are small segments of DNA within a chromosome that differ to the general population. CNV are normal in humans and often have no effect. Some CNV are linked with disorders of growth or development, congenital (birth) anomalies or distinctive facial features. CNV include a missing segment of the chromosome called a deleti...on or microdeletion, or they can be extra segments of a chromosome called a duplication or microduplication. Whether a CNV causes a human disorder depends on which chromosome is involved, whether it is a deletion or duplication, the size of the CNV, the genes that lie within the CNV, how the genes work in the body and whether one or two copies of the gene are required for full function. Chromosome segments are denoted by letters and numbers. The letter q is for the longer arm of the chromosome whilst the letter p is for the shorter arm of the chromosome. Each arm is then broken into smaller segments denoted by numbers. For example chromosome 22q11.2 deletion is a tiny missing piece (a deletion) on the long arm (q) of chromosome 22 in the segment 11.2. See more

08.01.2022 So what exactly is a variant in a gene? A variant is a difference in the code of the DNA that makes up the gene. A variant is classified by the effect it has on gene function. A benign variant doesnt impact the gene at all, is tolerated by the body and is not associated with human genetic conditions. A pathogenic variant means the gene function is affected, causing human genetic conditions. Pathogenic variants are commonly referred to as mutations. We all have variat...ions in our genes so too do animal and plant chromosomes so this is a normal part of DNA in a living being. Whether the variant alters gene function is what is important. In addition to variations in the DNA sequence, genetic conditions can also be caused by a missing copy of the gene (a deletion) or an extra copy of the gene (a duplication) and other processes affecting the gene. 02.01.2022 "A common misconception is that genetic carrier screening is not necessary if a couple have no known family history of a genetic disorder. Almost 90% of carriers of Cystic Fibrosis, Spinal Muscular Atrophy and Fragile X Syndrome have no known family history of the condition. For conditions less common than these three, it is even less likely that a family history will identify at-risk couples." Our genetic counsellor, Lauren, presenting on the weekend on the topic of counselling issues in preconception carrier screening. #genes #genetic #baby #pregnancy #IVF #genesaustralia #geneticcounselling #preconceptioncarrierscreening
