25.01.2022 Who else loves deliveries? I have added a new set of @_makarlu_ to the studio. The Makarlus are designed in Brisbane and made in Australia. They are just gorgeous and so versatile. Thanks @carla_mullins_ for the new pair.

25.01.2022 Let me introduce you to the lovely Lexi. Lexi is training to be a yoga instructor and Pilates helps her build stability to improve her yoga practice (and posture). I've been blown away by her progress and it's such a privilege to watch her learn. My favourite part is hearing how she's copied my cues in her yoga classes.

24.01.2022 What do you do when you have back pain? Paracetamol (panadol and similar) is a common pain killer, however a recent study has shown that paracetamol has only proven effective for four conditions: knee and hip osteoarthritis, craniotomy, tension headache and perineal pain after childbirth. The study found the evidence to support the use of paracetamol was low quality or inconclusive for most of the conditions for which it is commonly used. Back pain is one of the conditions fo...r which paracetamol has shown to be ineffective. Up until recently, the usual advice for back pain was rest and painkillers. Increasingly, studies have shown that exercise plays a critical role in treating and controlling back pain. I first started Pilates because of back pain. In my clients, I've found back pain is actually one of the most common motivators for starting Pilates. The Pilates method offers a lot of benefits for assisting with back pain. We can use repertoire that both stretches and strengthens the back. We start in supported positions (usually supine), where you can learn how to engage the muscles that need to be engaged. I start with foundational exercises that teach you how to support your back and find your deep stabilising muscles. From there, we increase load and challenge. "You are only as young as your spine is flexible" Joseph Pilates.

24.01.2022 Qld Health have clarified when you need to wear a mask during indoor exercise. A mask will be required in my studio for all clients unless they have a medical exemption. I will also be teaching in a mask. Honestly, I find masks quite claustrophobic and I'm struggling to adjust. I completely understand show unnatural it feels, but it is necessary to protect our community. I'm hanging out for 22 Jan and hopefully a lift in restrictions

24.01.2022 Dating advice from residents in a Victorian aged care facility. When my now husband and I went on our second date, I was exhausted from work and I wasnt talking very much. Andrew didnt know how tired I was and tried to pick an appropriate topic of conversation. He decided to explain Quantum physics to me . So, my dating advice is: Quantum physics is not a good conversation starter.... My heart breaks for the residents of aged care facilities who arent able to see their families and are being cared for by unfamiliar staff. At Warratah Lodge (where the residents in this post are from) enjoy seeing comments from people like you, so why not head over and send them a message

23.01.2022 Lower blood pressure is just one more reason to add Pilates into your weekly fitness routine: https://www.mindbodygreen.com//high-blood-pressure-new-res

22.01.2022 Loving the long weekend! Park plays, catching up with friends and enjoying the sunshine. What have you been doing?

21.01.2022 Day one of teaching with masks. (Anyone else a fan of The Princess Bride? My husband and I watched it last night and giggled at this line)

20.01.2022 I am rocking my curls in the studio today. Once upon a time I would have been embarrassed by such big hair. Thank goodness we no longer live with the fashions of the late 90s, early 2000s. They were not kind to those of us with thick, curly hair. Who else had the super straight, thinned hair? That hair cut did not do me any favours .

20.01.2022 I love this time of year. Spending time with loved ones, eating good food and taking time to rest before the new year begins. This year, this period of rest is more important than ever. I love the way Rachel has framed it - the warm down of 2020. Enjoy this period of rest to reset and refresh for the year ahead. Whatever your 2020 looked like, be grateful for the good, learn from the journey and head into 2021 with confidence that the best is yet to come.... "Don’t skip the final and possibly most important exercise of 2020 The processing, the stretching, the return to breathing as normal as possible."

20.01.2022 From my family to yours...Merry Christmas! May today be a day of peace and joy as you spend time with loved ones.

19.01.2022 Second last day in the studio for 2020. Time for some fun balance challenges with Lexi.

19.01.2022 You are enough. There are so many messages that tell us we arent thin enough, fit enough, smart enough, strong enough. Sometimes, those messages are in what we see around us, other times its what we tell ourselves. But, you are enough.

19.01.2022 Pilates is more than mats and reformers. Joseph Pilates was an avid inventor and I love showing clients how each of the pieces of equipment are linked. Whats your favourite piece of Pilates equipment?

19.01.2022 Can you spot the difference? I used these photos in a session today to help show a client the difference in their alignment. What difference do you see between the first and second photos? It is subtle, but it makes a big difference to how she uses her core.

17.01.2022 Funky socks and funky new tools in the studio. The Mobo Board is the newest addition to the studio. It builds stability and balance through the feet. It has been fun to play with and introduce to clients.

17.01.2022 I love this time of year. The days are warmer but not too warm. Over lockdown, my friends and I started catching up over bushwalks rather than food. Happily, we have continued the habit and tomorrow I am going walking with one of my best friends and I cant wait. I am also looking forward to celebrating Fathers Day on Sunday. I love all the little presents and cards that the kids make. What do you have planned for the weekend?

16.01.2022 How are you doing today? This is a workout from one of my favourite Pilates instructors, Carla Mullins from Body Organics Education. It is a lovely way to unwind after a busy week. Carla is incredibly knowledgeable and creative with movement and she generously shares videos and tips. She is also the inventor of the Makarlus - one of my favourite tools to use in the studio (https://www.makarlu.com/). Why not try this 15 minute workout to start your weekend? Let me know if you ...give it a go. I am sure you will feel amazing afterwards. https://vimeo.com/400412995/2171f7efa3

16.01.2022 Some time out of the studio this afternoon to celebrate Mother's Day. Maybe I should wear my crown in the studio next week?

16.01.2022 I love the simplicity and the complexity of Pilates. Pilates takes simple exercises and helps you focus on whats important. By learning the seemingly simple exercises and building on the foundations, you move into a deeper understanding of your body and how it works. That is what allows you to go deeper into the Pilates method and build strength from the inside out. What do you love about Pilates?

16.01.2022 And that's a wrap for 2020! Thank you for your support throughout the year. The studio will reopen on Thursday 7 January.

16.01.2022 Im not much of a runner, but Ive been trying to run a little bit lately. There is an oval near my house and I made a goal of running the track around the oval and seeing if I could just do one lap. I got about half way around the oval and I looked over at the people playing on the oval. I started to think about how ridiculous I must look with my run that was more of a shuffle. I was embarrassed and about to stop and then I thought of this image. It is a picture of one of my... knee xrays. Four knee surgeries, 5 scars on each knee, multiple hours of physio focused on bending my knee when it was stuck with scar tissue, 9 months on crutches... The people on the oval dont know my story (and they dont need to). I know my story. I know how far Ive come and how amazing it is to me that I can even run at all. Knowing where I have been gave me the confidence to keep going and run my way and at my pace. We all have our unique story and it is easy to start thinking of how our journey looks to others. But, it doesnt matter what it looks like. Knowing your goals, celebrating your successes and surrounding yourself with people who cheer you on is what moves you forward.

15.01.2022 We cant wait to see everyone back in the studio tomorrow. The new COVID restrictions in Brisbane will not affect the studio and classes are able to continue as usual. We are following our COVID hygiene protocols and maintaining a register of who attends classes. Remember: if you are unwell, stay home and get tested. Keeping our community safe is important and we all play a part.

14.01.2022 Who loves a good massage to relieve pain, stress and tension? Steph from YogaSol & Sol Therapies has written a post that explains why a massage feels so good. "When we massage the body we are inputting stimulus to the nervous system in the form of touch. This sensory input is received by neurons that are insulated and send information more rapidly unlike those that transmit pain. It is theorised in the Pain Gate Theory that it is because the sensory input from massage travels faster than the pain signal, it reaches the brain first closing the gate to the pain message. Pretty cool right!" Yoga Sol is owned by the lovely Claire, who is an experienced yoga instructor, massage therapist and myotherapist. I often refer my clients to her when they need some relief from pain or an injury.

14.01.2022 Monday fun to start the week

13.01.2022 This is my why...I don't want to be a spectator....I want to participate. What's your why? #whyidopilates

13.01.2022 This is what used to happen in my family. I loved looking just like my older sister. What about you? Did your parents dress you identically to your siblings?

12.01.2022 Lockdown update: The studio will be open again from Thursday. Per the Qld guidelines, you will be required to wear a mask during your session. If you don't have one with you, I can provide you with one. Thank you for staying safe and following the guidelines.

12.01.2022 Meet Sir Thomas Moore, Britains newest knight. For his 100th birthday, he decided to walk 100 laps around his garden to raise 1,000 for the NHS (UKs National Health Service). He ended up raising over 32 million. I hope at 100 that I can walk 100 laps of my garden and have a love for my community like Sir Thomas. "If I kneel down, Ill never get up again, but Im sure itll go well, as shes done it before.... AFP

12.01.2022 Fortunately Joseph Pilates didnt need to apply social distancing to his teaching....

12.01.2022 "Exercise is the most transformative thing that you can do for your brain." A single workout has a positive impact and, longer term, it helps protect the brain from degenerative diseases. https://www.facebook.com/29092950651/posts/10162924188310652/

11.01.2022 Happy Sunday! The best day for enjoying a brunch with family. If you are looking for an afternoon activity, the Qld Symphony Orchestra are playing at the Upper Kedron Reserve as part of the Brisbane Festival. Enjoy the spring weather and some talented musicians.

11.01.2022 I tossed and turned a bit last night. I would have liked a bit more sleep. Repost from @jessicavalantpilates

10.01.2022 Upper Kedron at its glorious best! Last night's sunset was gorgeous. #nofilter

09.01.2022 Today is National Dog Day. 18 months ago, we added Jazz to our lives. Can I confess something? I struggle to motivate myself to exercise sometimes. Jazz has been an awesome (paw-some?) motivator to get out and walk. Pilates appointments can work the same way. Having a date and time locked in your diary each week takes away the indecisiveness that leads us to miss essential exercise.

09.01.2022 Today is R U Ok day - a day that reminds us to take the time to check in with those around us and truly listen to what is happening in their world. Listening is one of the greatest gifts we can give to someone who is struggling with the world around them. We dont need to have answers and solutions.

09.01.2022 Happy birthday to Joseph Pilates! Officially, his birthday was yesterday, but I'm celebrating with those in the northern hemisphere . 09.01.2022 My friend posted this today and it made me giggle! I hope you are enjoying the windy, cool morning. Its gorgeous in the sun.

09.01.2022 R U Ok day was yesterday, but it is something we can practice everyday. If you are interested in learning to be a better listener, I watched this TED talk recently which inspired me to try hard to truly listen to the people around me. https://www.facebook.com/29092950651/posts/10162670801715652/

09.01.2022 Take the risk, make the leap and try something new. Starting something new can be scary. I am guilty of delaying making changes to my life because Im waiting for the perfect time. But perfection isnt real and sometimes we just have to take the first step.

08.01.2022 How do you breathe? Do you breathe through the mouth or nose? Do you breathe deep into your belly? Or do you have shallow breaths into your chest? One of the first things I assess in an initial consult is how you breathe. Joseph Pilates said "Above all, learn how to breathe correctly". Breath is intrinsically connected with how you move, your posture and how your body functions.... I came across this article today and loved it. It has some great exercises and releases to help you breathe better. https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au//breathe-better-and-reduc

07.01.2022 Stay safe everyone. If you are unwell, get tested and stay home. We are continuing to maintain strict hygiene protocols within the studio, as well as keeping registers for who attends class.

07.01.2022 Yesterday I posted two pictures of my lovely client. The pictures showed the difference between a tiled pelvis and a neutral pelvis, which then created a neutral spine. Here is a video of my client using tactile feedback (her hands) to help cue her into a neutral pelvis whilst doing leg and footwork. But, why is it important? Without a neutral pelvis and spine, Bel wasn't effectively using her core. It makes a big difference to seeing long term improvement, less back pain a...nd more functional movement. These subtle corrections are so worthwhil. That's why my studio has small class sizes. I can help you achieve the best movement for your body. It is personalised and tailored to your needs so you see long term benefits.

06.01.2022 I like watching how leaders lead. Daniel Andrew, the premier of Victoria, has fronted press conferences everyday for about 70 days. To him, it is a show of leadership - the Coronavirus doesnt take a break so neither will he until the situation is under control. He wants to be present for the Victorians facing weeks of lockdown. His ability to show up everyday is admirable, but is it a good practice? There are four key elements to good health: * what we eat * how we sleep... * how much we move * how we relax. Rest and relaxation are as important to our health as what we eat or how much we exercise. 2020 has been a busy, challenging year. Finding rest within the crazy is important for our mental and physical health, gaining a fresh perspective and motivation and building relationships with our loved ones. It is easy to forget its important in building a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. What do you think of Daniel Andrews daily commitment?

04.01.2022 Genesia Pilates has a range of class options to suit your needs and budget. Given the current environment, I am updating my pricing to help manage your cashflow. I am reducing the price of my packs of 5 classes to match the price per session of a 10 pack. Here are my prices per session for packs of five classes: Mat work: $15/class (60 mins) Group reformer: $25/class (45 mins)... Duet personalised class: $38/class (60 mins) Individual class: $65/class (60 mins) The website will be updated shortly to reflect the new pricing.

02.01.2022 How well can you balance? Adding balance exercise into your weekly routines is important. Our sense of balance begins to decline from around the age of 30! Eek! We rely on three systems to maintain our balance: * Visual * Vestibuluar (inner ear)... * Somotosensory (feedback from our muscles and ligaments) Practising balance exercises helps train our brain to use these three systems to maintain and improve balance. How often should we practice our balance? 5 minutes per day at least 5 days per week (so, 30 minutes each week). The Pilates repertoire contains many opportunities to practice balance and stabilisation. And I love using the tools in the studio, like the MOBO, to challenge stability and spatial awareness.

02.01.2022 Did you know: Joseph Pilates would say "After an hour, get in the shower". Clients in his studio would be asked to shower after their Pilates workout. Joseph had a technique for showering and would sometimes get into the shower with people to teach them proper washing and scrubbing techniques! If you want some more 'fun facts' about Joseph, check out this link: https://tinyurl.com/y2x6k5j4
