17.01.2022 Diwali Today we celebrated Diwali, the Indian festival of lights. Our amazing educators created beautiful opportunities for our children to be involved in experiences throughout the day, including their own Rangoli’s and painting fireworks in small groups. Celebrating this activity was guided by one of our very own staff members who celebrates Diwali as part of her culture. Miss Sandeep provided ideas and resources (along with our amazing Lead Educators) for each r...oom to select as part of Diwali celebrations. Miss Sandeep also wore her Traditional Dress Clothing and Accessories- the children were so engaged in learning about, and trying on, these items. They were in awe of the entire experience, and expressed that they want her to wear it again and again! Participating in activities such as this supports the children in becoming culturally aware and developing an appreciation for diversity. We want to wish you all a joyful Diwali that brings happiness prosperity and joy to you and your family. #Diwali2020 #culturalawareness #BuildingConnections #alittlebitofgeniusgoesalongway #itsgenius #besteducators

14.01.2022 As a part of Early Childhood Education we know it’s important to undertake cultural celebrations in acknowledging rights and traditions. When teaching, learning and investigating festivals, traditions, and/or religious celebrations it is important to us that we also choose those that are relevant to the children and families within our centre and ones that can enable children, and educators, to become aware of each other’s cultures. ... We would love to know more about our families events, celebrations, beliefs and about their cultures. This week we will be placing a cultural calendar in our centre reception area and invite all families, children and educators to add to it and share any special upcoming events with us #alittlebitofgeniusgoesalongway #itsgenius

13.01.2022 This week our 2yr old Safari Room children have been learning all about, expressing and understanding their own, and each others, emotions Emotional regulation involves recognising emotions, using language to express feelings, learning to calm them selves down in the face of overwhelming emotions, and learning to treat others with kindness and empathy. ... These are skills and behaviours that need to be learned, Toddlers are learning so much about themselves and their place in the world. They are often overwhelmed with big emotions as they develop and grow, learning to master big emotions and the associated social skills of emotional regulation helps children to succeed not just in childhood but right through to adulthood. Engaging in playful feelings and emotions activities is perfect for engaging young children with recognising, thinking and talking about emotions, which is an important first step in the process of learning to manage emotions. #emotions #engagingplay #alittlegeniusgoesalongway #itsgenius #bookatourtoday

13.01.2022 Hi Families, Tropical Cyclone Kimi is now estimated to be hitting inland south of Cairns later today or early tomorrow morning. We are still open at this stage.... We are however strongly encouraging families to please keep their children home today and tomorrow if at all possible - as with the unpredictable direction and intensity of this cyclone (or even any unsafe weather coming from it) we may need to close the centre quickly at anytime. We will be monitoring all day and making decisions based on warnings and changes of advice for everybody’s safety. Please ensure that your current details are up to date if you are needing to bring child/children into the centre today or tomorrow so you can be contacted in the case of an emergency. Thankyou to those families who have already notified through the Xplor app that their child will be absent and staying home. There will be regular updates on Xplor so please ensure your notifications are turned on to receive future updates. You can also follow latest updates on the Bureau of Meteorology page and app aswell as your local radio news stations. The next update will be at 8am today AEST Monday.

13.01.2022 It’s Beginning to look a little like Christmas..... Our children and families have begun setting up their Christmas decorations and traditions at home. This has sparked many conversations throughout the centre between children, families and educators. ... Our amazing Educators are extending on this interest and have begun setting up interest areas within their rooms - Interest settings are beneficial to both children and educators. For children, interest areas guide play, exploration and discovery which are all used to foster children’s holistic development. Interest areas enable educators to think intentionally about how to organize the space and involve the children to provide accessible materials that engage children and enhance their play experiences. #alittlebitofgeniusgoesalongway #itsgenius #christmashomecorner

06.01.2022 Japanese Children's Day Today, May 5th is Children’s Day in Japan (Is , Kodomo no Hi). It is a day set aside in Japan to respect children's personalities and to celebrate their happiness. It is a designated national holiday and it has been a day of celebration in Japan since ancient times.... We have a some beautiful Japanese educators in our Centre who wanted to share a special Japanese cultural event with us, which of course we welcomed with open arms! Our very own Miss Kumi and Miss Yasi organised Origami craft activities and fun sensory experiences, they showed and encouraged the children to make origami Kabuto (Samurai helmets). Miss Kumi and Miss Yasi discussed with the children how they celebrate Children’s Day and what people do for it in Japan. Miss Kumi prepared a experience to create Koinobori which means ‘carp streamer’ which is displayed in each house to celebrate the day in Japan. Children were very curious to hear the Japanese "Koinobori song, which is a traditional song and they seemed excited to start making own Koinobori! Children used cups, clothes, eye bowls, origami papers to decorate using their fine motor skills and unique imagination. Children we asked questions throughout the experience such as, "Do you remember what we call the fish? and Why do Japanese people use Koi fish to display at their homes? Educators explained These Koi fish are symbols of family. Parents display them hoping that their children will grow up healthy and strong as Koi is known as strong/long-lived fish. We think this is a wonderful tradition! For afternoon tea all children were able to try making their own temaki rolls with vegetables, teriyaki chicken, sticky rice and Seaweed sheets. The children, learnt about and explored, the diversity of culture, background and celebrations - Which opens opportunities for new understandings. #CelebratingCultures #alittlebitofgeniusgoesalongway #itsgenius #bookatourtour
