04.01.2022 Thoughts on passwords. It is not necessary to remember passwords any more than you would attempt to remember the phone numbers of all the people you know. (Only 3-5 passwords actually need to be remembered)... Trying to make them memorable is a major roadblock in creating good quality passwords. Much of the advice about passwords is wrong (or at least makes password creation, use and management more difficult than it needs to be) It's true that no password should be used twice and that no password should contain even 1 piece of personal info. Passwords need to be easy to type and easy to hold in your mind for a minute or two. For those who aren't ready for the friction of a password manager, I advocate creating passwords by choosing 3 short random words (flick to 3 random pages in a dictionary and pick some word from each page), capitalise some part of what you end up with and add a number. Record it. (This is the most important part - a book is fine for most of us and is completely secure from most attackers) Forget about it.
