17.01.2022 Here is another video in the series of what we can do to reduce our stress at this crazy time: Mindfulness When we hear the word mindfulness often what comes to mind is meditation or even relaxation. Mindfulness is not synonymous with either of those things. ... Mindfulness is essentially paying attention to what you are going and what is happening in the moment. In the context of a domestic task such as washing dishes for example it would mean paying attention to what you are doing as well as things like the temperature of the water, the feel of the soap on your hands and being aware of handling each item you are washing. In the context of our mental and emotional experience, being mindful is about noticing and paying attention to our thoughts and feelings at a given moment. You might acknowledge with I am having the thought that or I am having a feeling of. Or, taking it to the next level I notice I am having the thought that... When we do this, we are able to step away from the emotional storm and become an observer rather than participant. This in turn creates the opportunity to respond rather than react to a situation. Practice mindfulness/paying attention regularly, train it like a muscle. Mindfulness is the gateway to self-knowledge. Self-knowledge is the gateway to self-mastery. Self-mastery is the power to choose your response to a given situation. 15.01.2022 Here is the second video in the series of what we can do to reduce our stress and calm the nervous system at this crazy time: Using the Breath Practice the following exercise for a few minutes at a time a few times a day:... stand tall or lie down with your back supported take slow deep breaths through your nose, filling up the belly first (picture the expanding belly of a sleeping baby), then fill up the chest while expanding the ribs sideways and back to front on the exhalation soften the rib cage first and then empty the belly repeat the breath cycle for a period of several minutes, guiding the breath but not forcing it ensure that you inhale and exhale through your nose whilst keeping the tongue on the top of your mouth where your teeth meet your gums The benefits of this include: the parasympathetic nervous system (the bodys relaxation response) is activated the movement of the diaphragm (the breathing muscle which separates the top and bottom halves of the trunk) effectively massages the internal organs and improves circulation breathing through the nose can provide protection from infections as the air is filtered before it enters the body this way of breathing is closer to the natural way we were meant to breathe before we got scrunched sitting in chairs for the majority of the day It seems like a simple exercise, but trust me, the magic is in the application. I believe each of us has gifts in the form of valuable ideas, insights and experience which might illuminate or provide a different perspective on an issue or a problem another has. Self-reflection is one of the highest and most powerful abilities we as humans have. Self-reflection leads to self-knowledge. Self-knowledge is the path to self-mastery. Self-mastery is the power to choose our responses in a given situation. The Good Chat Virtual Café aims to inspire self-reflection and connection so we can benefit from each others wisdom and experience. This sessions theme will be Learnings from Isolation. As life inches towards something that will eventually become the new normal, we will reflect on some of the things that we have learned during our time in isolation. 11.01.2022 It has been just over a year since I last had an alcoholic drink Like a lot of frazzled and stressed mums I was using a glass of wine at the end of the day to try and relieve tension and to survive the evening’s chaos. In fact, we all know, alcohol does exactly the opposite. It stresses our system, wreaks havoc with our emotions and sleep and is a proven contributor to our risk of developing cancer. ... I was having a glass on most days and more on the weekends. I tried to cut down, but it did not work out for me. I therefore made the decision to stop completely, and I am much happier and healthier for it. Of course there are much more effective ways to deal with stress and overwhelm. We are not our thoughts and feelings. We are the observer of our thoughts and feelings. The key is to learn to manage our thoughts and feelings in ways that allows us to nurture ourselves through difficult times and take actions that bring us closer to the things and ways of being that are important to us.

Today is about cleansing or minimising in order to make more mental space and breathing space for the things that matter most: (1) Our surroundings and our belongings: Can you find some time to clear out your wardrobe, the cupboards and shelves? Give away what can be reused and dispose of the rest.... (2) Our physical consumption: Could you aim to eat healthier, drink more water and less alcohol and maybe even incorporate one or two fasting days into your week (I know this is made a bit more difficult now that we are at home). (3) Our mental consumption: This refers to being more aware and more selective about things like who we follow on social media, how much time we spend on it (why not take a social media fast?), as well as what we read and watch. And most importantly, we should be making time to just sit still and be and listen to our quiet voice in the quiet place, without external inputs.
