20.01.2022 History of Meitoku Yagi and the Meibukan Meitoku Yagi also known as "Dai Sensei Yagi" was one of Chojun Miyagis most senior students and the founder of the Mei...bukan branch of Goju-Ryu. He is a descendant of one of the original 36 families that emigrated to Okinawa from China. Meitoku Yagi was born in 1912 and began studying under Miyagi in 1926. It is said that he was the first one that learned all of the Goju-Ryu kata from Miyagi. In 1952 he was given permission by Miyagi to begin teaching and opened his own dojo in the Daido district. This dojo was later moved to the present location in Kume. The Meibukan is unique in that they practice 5 additional kata that are not found in the other branches of Goju-Ryu. These kata were created by Meitoku Yagi himself. Meitoku Yagi never wrote any books or produced any videos as he thought this was not appropriate or traditional. He believed students who were interested in classical Okinawan Goju would seek him out on their own. He didnt believe in advertising or promotion, just like his teacher Chojun Miyagi. He was named a living national treasure and awarded the fourth order of merit by the Japanese Emperor for his accomplishments. Chojun Miyagis family also presented him with Miyagis gi and obi, signifying they wanted him to be the successor. Meitoku Yagi had many accomplished students including Senaha Shigetoshi who went on to establish the Ryusyokai, Masanobu Shinjo, the late Anthony Mirakian who brought the Meibukan style to America and of course his two sons Meitatsu and Meitetsu Yagi who carry on the Meibukan legacy today.
