01.01.2022 Earlier today we asked which password you thought had been hacked the most - P@$$w0rd or p@$$word. The voting results were split right down the middle! Believe it or not - P@$$w0rd has actually been breached more times than p@$$word - making it a less secure password (although you shouldn't use either of these passwords!) And password100 has been breached less times than both! Here's the number of times each password has been found in a password breach, according to haveibeen...pwned.com: P@$$w0rd - 4,880 times p@$$word - 2,770 times password100 - 2,655 times password98765 - 6 times It's common for hackers to try passwords from data breaches - in order from most often found password. "But they say to add symbols to my password to make it more complex!" we hear you say. But hackers already know this, and try common substitutions - @ for a, $ for s, 0 for o, 3 for e - the original leetspeak. Our recommendation is not to worry about symbol substitution. Instead, make the password longer. For every extra character added, the difficulty of cracking your password increases exponentially. Instead, take a couple of random words, and deliberately misspell them. Then add some numbers. For example, you could take the words "Bitter" and "Relaxation", and turn that into: BitturRelakzaycion396 A great benefit of this is that you can double click it to select the whole password to copy it - instead of one with a symbol in the middle, which will often break! It would take 24 days and 20 hours to crack the password P@$$w0rd It would take 494,607,663,621,551,300,000 (494 billion billion, or 494 quintillion) years to crack the password BitturRelakzaycion396 Thanks everyone for playing along!
