24.01.2022 - # As winter approaches it is important we keep our feet dry and warm. ... Chilblains present most commonly as single or multiple tender, itching red-blue-violet patches, lumps or nodules on the tips of your toes (and fingers). In severe cases, blistering and ulceration can occur. Chilblains are often painful and they usually clear up on their own within 1 - 3 weeks. Chilblains can occur in anyone, however are more common in diabetics with neuropathy, or people with Raynauds. It is important to wear warm shoes or boots and socks that can protect your feet in icy temperatures. Keeping your feet dry and warm is particularly important. The better the insulation the less likely it is for chilblains to occur / recur.

24.01.2022 Remember to take care of your feet in summer! - Just when you want your feet to look good, walking barefoot or even in different shoes, and perspiring can lead to dry and cracked heels. Moisturising often will make a huge difference - it'a a good idea to use a product made for dry heels. - Whilst on the subject of barefoot - there are some definite benefits to allowing in the fresh air and sunshine But....we so often see cuts, insect bites and foreign objects in f...eet at this time of the year. - so be super careful f you don't want to be limping your way through the festive season. - If you're a diabetic, wear shoes at all times - even a tiny cut can cause big problems. - Don't forget your feet when applying sunscreen! - Thongs - yes, they're easy and part of our Sydney culture, but go easy - they don't have arch support and offer no stability. Great for the hot sand on the beach or when using those public showers, but not for long walks... Enjoy the summer, keep safe and don't forget to social distance! PS Gentin Podiatry & Physiotherapy is open through the holiday season for all your foot care and physiotherapy needs.

23.01.2022 Did you know that 13August is International Left-Handers Day? Approximately 12% of the worlds population is left-handed. Famous Australian Lefties include Allan Border, Michael Clark,Rod Laver, Mitchell Starc, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman and many more. The New South Wales Workplace Health & Safety Act 2011 must address the needs of left-handed employees. Employers should ensure that a left-handed employees telephone, computer, and workstation is correctly designed and oriented for left-handed use. Placement of office equipment such as the telephone and computer in the correct relation to each other is important to efficient and effective work.

22.01.2022 - # Are you lucky enough to be going to the slopes this year? , , .... Skiing uses muscles we dont use the rest of the year so its important to get those feet and legs ready for their workout - youll be asking a lot of them. * Our physiotherapist (and experienced skier), Sara, will get you ski ready with a personalised stretching and strengthening program - ! * Visit us for general foot and nail care wearing your ski boots * Walking barefoot is good first step, stimulating your muscles and nerves * Massage gets the blood flowing and releases the plantar muscles * Dont double-sock - this causes wrinkles and friction! * Ski Size Matters - boots are often best when 1-2 sizes smaller than your usual shoes. Make sure there is plenty of room for your foot in the boot by removing the liner and checking out the space. Try boots again with the shell, liner and your socks - they should feel snug!

15.01.2022 Don't forget your feet - they literally carry you through life! Think about the foundations of a building - unsound and weak underpinnings make a building so much weaker. It may not be something you pay particular attention to when you are focusing on your abs and your glutes, but think about that building again. Your feet and ankles provide your body with stability, and how you actually stand and move on your feet affects your posture and balance.

15.01.2022 Nothing better than a Sydney summer! Don't ignore your feet in your sun awareness routine and check them regularly, especially between the toes and under your feet. Melanoma can pop up anywhere your body. Use a hand mirror to check for changing moles, pink/red spots or growths, or brown/black vertical lines under a toenail. Unfortunately, past foot injuries can increase the risk of melanoma, so pay special attention to any areas that have been injured, even if years ago.

15.01.2022 Still missing your pedi? We are here to help get your feet looking good and feeling terrific - say goodbye to those long nails, dry skin and calluses with our professional foot treatment suitable for all.

14.01.2022 So many people have been working from home this year - and we’ve seen a marked increase in lower back and hip issues, and muscle stiffness and fatigue. And seeing there’s no guarantee office work is going to resume in person soon, here are some ideas to cope. Working in a home office is often not ideal from an ergonomic perspective. Your work station has not been set up with a view to you spending endless hours at the computer. For example, the heights of both desk and chai...r should be carefully worked out so that you can stare at the screen of hours while maintaining the best possible posture. The chairs themselves are often okay for a couple of hours at a time, but not for hours, days and weeks of staring at the screen. Talking about the screen, home office lighting should be looked at to make sure you are not straining your eyes. So how to help those aching shoulders, stiff necks and sore lower backs that so often are related to poor posture and sitting in a bad position? Get up! Walk around while you're thinking or on the phone. Grab a drink of water, look out the window, take some deep breaths. If you have time, lie on the floor for a few minutes and do some easy back stretches - pull your knees up to your chest and rock from side to side - you’ll feel so much better. Turn off your Zoom video and stretch your head and neck. The incidental walking we do each day while commuting to work, and while at work, should not be undervalued. Even if not at a pace, those bursts of activity stretch the muscles, get the circulation flowing and help realign the body after hours of being sedentary. Use the time you are saving by not travelling into work to give your body a treat - walk, jog, move around. Channels like YouTube and have so much on offer - you can do a quick stretch class in front of the TV. If you are really inspired, sign up to a Zoom exercise class. Take a good look at your work station. Your computer screen should be at eye level. Elbows should be able to rest comfortably on the desk, at 90 degrees to your torso, and shoulders should be relaxed. Likewise, your wrists should not take strain - try a trackpad or mix this up with a traditional mouse to give your muscles a break. Make sure that your chair has some lower back support - if it does not, use a physiotherapy recommended lumbar support or some supportive cushions. Don't cradle your phone under your chin - a good pair of earphones will be a game changer!

14.01.2022 Some fun ideas to move our bodies (and in turn move our brains) We have planned a series of fun ways to walk between places - instead of normal walking you can introduce movement patterns, strength, balance and coordination just by getting from A to B (as well as refresh and get the brain firing). Check today one out.... "The Penguin walk" Stand up straight and turn your feet out. Keep arms straight by your side and take short, quick steps. Encourage walking on heels to waddle like a penguin. Make it harder: Add a ball or balloon in between your knees. The Benefit: When your child balances on their heels (with their ankles and toes flexed up) this facilitates pelvic floor muscle activity which in turn increases abdominal muscle activity = CORE. This will aid overall posture and co-ordination. Walking on heels in penguin pose means less foot on the floor. This means your child has to stabilise themselves on this decreased foot area. Automatically they will progress their balance skills. Its a win win.

11.01.2022 Daylight Saving ends on Sunday 4 April at 3am - don't forget to turn your clocks BACK 1 hour (that means an extra hour of sleep!) DID YOU KNOW? - Daylight Saving was first trialled in Canada before WW2 - The 1st state in Australia to trial Daylight Saving was Tasmania, in 1917 & 1942... - Other States (excluding Queensland) adopted the practice in 1971 - Today, NSW, ACT, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania all have Daylight Saving - Queensland And Western Australia do not. 04.01.2022 Did you know: Childhood is the most important time for feet and body development your feet in this stage grow and strengthen to what they will be when you are fully developed. Flat, neural or supinated. As expert youth Podiatrists and Physiotherapists we recognise many children experience development problems and pains with their feet and lower legs. These may be hereditary issues, growing pains, in some cases poor biomechanics and problems can even develop from inappropr...iate footwear. The big question for most parents and educators is; How can you tell if your child has a problem? Often, they will begin to complain of a recurrent pain generally in their knees, ankles, heels or back. Sometimes, simply looking at the wear pattern on a childs shoes will help to tell you whats creating the problem. We have some simple techniques that can help fix these common problems. However, sometimes the problem is not simple it may reveal an underlying condition which may require immediate treatment or consultation with another specialist. The Australian Podiatry and Physiotherapy Association recommends foot health examinations for schoolchildren on a regular basis. So keep up the regular checks - and keep your kids feet healthy!!

04.01.2022 Our happy place!

03.01.2022 Gentin Podiatry & Physiotherapy will be OPEN through the holiday season - call us on 9387 3174 or email [email protected] for appointments

03.01.2022 Stabilising and strengthening your core has incredible benefits! Build core stability - Lightly pull in the tummy muscles. Hold for 5 seconds, relax. Repeat 12 times. Don't forget to breathe. Build core strength to bring balance to the front and back of your body. The Plank and Bridge are great for building core strength and can be done anywhere.Bridge: Lying on your back, bend your knees and keep your feet flat on the ground. Slowly raise your hips off the floor, lightly ...tightening your tummy muscles at the same time. Raise up to a comfortable point and hold for 30 seconds. Plank: Start on the floor on your hands and knees, with your hands under your shoulders. Step your feet back. For more stability, bring your feet wider than hip-distance apart. Make sure there is a straight line from your heels to the crown of your head and look down at the floor. Lightly tighten abs, quads, glutes and hold. This can be modified by putting your knees on the ground. Core strength lowers the risk of back injury, supporting and protecting the spine. Yoga and Pilates are great for strengthening the core. 03.01.2022 Ok, here is todays Hidden Stretch. Lets all stay strong while working "from home" or the office and avoid the niggles and pains. Remember, the goal is to perform the stretch throughout the day (at least twice, hopefully more).... Shoes off. Why: Simple as this. Our feet are made to move. Our feet werent made to sit in crammed shoes all day. So, do yourself a favour and keep a tennis or golf ball in your drawer. Take it out and enjoy a nice soothing roll. How: Start in a seated position. Place a small ball underneath the arch of your foot. Apply pressure down on the ball, and roll the ball from the base of the heel up to the base of the great toe. Where: You should feel this along the arch of our foot and maybe even referring up your leg or into your toes. The more you can get your feet moving freely the happier you will be. . . . . . . . . . . . . #worklife #stayfit #bodystrong #posture
