23.01.2022 Congratulations to all the organisers of the MORTONE Twilight Life Saving Carnival last night. Organised by the Mordialloc Life Saving Club and Mentone Lifesaving Club, clubs including Pt Leo, Black Rock, Half Moon Bay and Portsea got behind what turned out to be a fun night. ( If I’ve left anyone out, please post) We ran a successful Covid safe event thanks to all the competitors and their support teams sticking to the rules. I reckon we’ll see another one not too far down the track.
21.01.2022 Perplexing to hear that Kingston Council’s CEO, Julie Reid is leaving after barely 12 months in the role. I have no hesitation in saying that in my time on Council Julie proved to be an outstanding appointment. She had earned the respect of most Councillors and council staff through a combination of hard work and attention to detail, I wish her all the best in her new role with Local Government Victoria. News of Julie’s resignation has caused a number residents to contact me,... asking how this could happen after such a short period of time. Due to being constrained by confidentiality provisions I can’t comment specifically however it’s worth noting that the current Council has the power to remove the confidentiality provisions covering the numerous in camera meetings held throughout 2020, this action may at the very least provide the community with the level of transparency it surely deserves. 18.01.2022 Great to have Parktone Primary School Grade Five down at Mordialloc Life Saving Club for the past couple of days learning water safety skills. A great bunch of kids who were enthusiastic and had a go at everything despite some horrible weather. We like to think programs like this make all who complete it a bit safer around the water this summer. Grade Six later this week.
15.01.2022 The Rotary Club of Bentleigh Moorabbin Central, Moorabbin and Mordialloc are holding a clean up day at Karkarook Park, located on Warrigal Road Heatherton this coming Australia Day, next Tuesday. I’ve attached a flyer so you can see the day includes a free BBQ. We’d love to see as many people as possible drop in to say hello and we can all do our bit to look after our own backyard.
12.01.2022 Last Sunday Nippers for 2020 and look who turned up at Mordialloc Life Saving Club, travelling in style I might add!
09.01.2022 Great news, the Summer Carnival is back in Mordi for another year. It hasn’t been easy to organise given Covid but Smart Amusements Melbourne, a great local business have made it happen. Jump on their website and see how it’s all going to work, then, have fun!... https://fb.me/e/1PVTr3Kvv
07.01.2022 I was pleased to have a start date confirmed for the planned upgrade to the Parkdale shopping centre following a question I asked at last weeks Council meeting. The work, which has been planned for over 12 months, will commence over winter, 2021. The works have taken on a greater degree of urgency since the closure of the McIndoe Pde pedestrian rail crossing. The ridiculous alternatives proposed by PTV demonstrate a total lack of familiarity or concern about local conditions.... The Parkdale upgrade includes a new pedestrian crossing directly adjacent to the station entrance in addition to improved footpaths and street furniture.
04.01.2022 Diasappointing that the Kingston Rd land in Heatherton that Council has long expected would be acquired by the State Government in order to establish a regional sporting facility will instead be used as rail yards for the suburban rail loop. The Delta site as it’s known is in part an old landfill however it was engineer filled making it perfect for the establishment of football, cricket, soccer, hockey or baseball fields. Given the Green Wedge zoning something along the lin...es of the original Albert Park precinct or even Fawkner Park would fit in perfectly. The Suburban Rail Loop is a project that requires an enormous amount of planning in preparation simply to even begin the business case that will be required however I would suggest that the loss of this land, ignores a very well documented immediate need. There is also the Chain of Parks project that the land in question would have formed part of. Admittedly the land required for the CoP can be capped landfills however the original plan will need to be altered. I believe the community need to make it clear to the State Government that the need for significantly expanded sports fields is immediate and justified and that this decision is going to do nothing to ease the pressure on local clubs and organisations, a dilemma that will only get worse. I’ll be interested to see how those that have been very vocal about retaining the open space feel of the Green Wedge, will react to have something similar to the photos below as part of the vista.
01.01.2022 The decision taken by the State Government to use the land in Heatherton known as the Delta site for a rail stabling yard instead of the immediately needed sports grounds and long promised Chain of Parks is certainly a kick in the face for not just local residents, but more broadly the municipalities of Kingston, Bayside and Glen Eira, all short of usable open space. It’s a well known fact that there is nowhere near the capacity for the demand of junior sport, boys and gi...rls, even before we consider the inadequate space available for community sport of all ages and abilities. The suburban rail loop may well turn out to be an inspiring project however as it remains only a concept, infrastructure that the community needs now should not be neglected in its favour. The Kingston Council needs to stand up for its community, a community who has heard plenty of rhetoric over the years, together with an abundance of grandstanding when it comes to the Green Wedge only to see Council apparently capitulate without a whimper when the Stare Government flexes its muscles. Council should not be considering alternative (AKA-2nd rate) locations for sports fields or the Chain of Parks, they should be assuming the role of community leadership and advocating without fear or favour for the community wishes, to move the stabling yards, Monday night will see how they go!
