22.01.2022 This explains how nitrogen fixing bacteria work. These bacteria are important to our ecosystem. As Western Australia has the poorer soils in the world and natural way of adding nitrogen is really important.... This article explains it well. https://www.britannica.com/science/nitrogen-fixing-bacteria
21.01.2022 Today we moved to a next stage of a trial with Dr Julie Ardley of Murdoch University. The plants here are Eutaxia microphylla which were struck from cuttings on 24/8/20, inoculated on 15/10/20 and Pricked out on 20/11/20. The root development appears good and some of the plants had good nodules. The colour was good as well - this will be due to the nitrogen fixed by the bacteria in the nodules. ... By understanding this better and knowing which bacteria work with which plants, we will be able to grow better plants and know that they will thrive in our customers settings. On a larger scale, this can help with better carbon sequestration and prettier gardens that use less fertiliser and water !! The video in this link explains it well. https://www.britannica.com/science/nitrogen-fixing-bacteria

15.01.2022 Sedges have edges and reeds are round. These are Lepidosperma gladiatum or coastal sword sedge - you can see them on the banks of the Vasse River Diversion Drain. They are flowering at the moment - not spectacular flowers, but it’s nice to know what they are doing. ... https://gcln.org.au/product/lepidosperma-gladiatum/ They are grown at the nursery and provide habitat and protection in damp spots. The name gladiatum indicates that the leaves are like a Gladiators sword. The same goes for gladioli - I wonder if Dame Edna knew that when she coined the phrase ??
14.01.2022 A stark and sad reminder about the importance of responsible pet ownership and the impact cats have on our native wildlife. This footage was sent to us by Luke... from Queensland and shows the toll of a roaming domestic cat on a native snake. The following day, the snake was located deceased and the cat was recorded roaming in the subsequent nights. Sadly, the event captured here is not an anomaly according to leading scientists, each day more than 3.1 million mammals, 1 million birds and 1.7 million reptiles like this snake are killed by cats across Australia. Pet cats alone are estimated to kill 83 million native reptiles each year. Conservation is everyone’s business and you can do your part by being a responsible cat owner and practicing cat containment 24/7. Responsible cat ownership also means safer cats by keeping our cats happy and safe indoors. For tips and tricks on how to best look after your cat indoors, visit the Safe Cat, Safe Wildlife website: http://www.safecat.org.au/ Thank you to Luke for sending us this footage.

03.01.2022 This Thursday at the Busselton Naturalists club Laura Skates has just handed in her PhD thesis after three years of research into carnivorous plants.
