19.01.2022 My old university friend John Quiggin is now a fan of credentialism - either a sign of age or he's angling for a job with the Department of Immigration, which these days could be called the Department of Labels: http://insidestory.org.au/in-praise-of-credentialism

18.01.2022 Perhaps President Trump would like the freedom the Australian Constitution gives - nice piece from George Williams today including a riff on the Immigration Restriction Act 1901: http://www.canberratimes.com.au//australias-discriminatory

18.01.2022 Rules surrounding travel restrictions are changing regularly. For those seeking the most up-to-date info, including guidelines on decision making by the Department of Home Affairs, you can see them here: https://covid19.homeaffairs.gov.au/travel-restrictions

17.01.2022 Wishing success for the Vanuatu Smiles book. This beautiful book of photographs will raise money for charity, as Myra says - Vanuatu has had a profound effect on Marty and I each and every time we visit - not because of it's poverty and the fact that it is one of the least developed countries in the world, but because of the spirit of the people and they way in which they taught us a lesson in humanity. We wanted to find a way to show our gratitude and this book "Vanuatu ...Smiles" is the result. Marty and I have donated pro bono our time and images to the creation of this book and 100% of the profits we raise from sales are going to a charity called Operation Education Vanuatu. They are a grass root, 100% volunteer, not for profit, non-government registered charity that provides resources and building materials for the construction of school buildings and heath clinics in various communities across Vanuatu. All donations they receive go directly to the cause and non is directed to administration etc which is quite unique for many charities. Apart from our decision to direct the profits to this charity, we have no affiliation with this charity or its associates. However, we do believe in their efforts and how they go about achieving this, and we also believe that small individual contributions can make a difference to our world. http://au.blurb.com//5179664-vanuatu-smiles-large-hard-cov

07.01.2022 Thinking of moving to Australia? *New Regional Skilled Work Visa* Tomorrow, the Australian Government is launching two new skilled work visas for skilled migrants looking to settle in regional areas of Australia.... The Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491) and Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa (subclass 494) will allow migrants to apply for Permanent Residency after three years of living and working in their regional area. 23,000 places will be available annually, replacing the current 187 and 489 Visas. We're still waiting on the state governments to confirm the list of acceptable occupations for the 491. We do know that, 650 occupations will be avaiable for the 494, they can be found here: https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2019L01403 However, we're getting indications that it might not be ready just yet. While the Federal Government says its ready for launch, the individual states may take more time: A spokesperson for NSW Treasury said the NSW Government is carefully considering the nomination process for this new visa and they will provide an update at the appropriate time.. Both the North Inland NSW Regional Development Australia and Riverina RDA, don't expect to be taking applications until January 2020. If you think this is something that interests you or you'd like more information on these new visas. Contact our office: www.austimmigration.com.au

06.01.2022 A landmark decision today in the High Court. Ruling that Indigenous Australians are exempt from immigration law that could lead to their deportation. Excellent news.

06.01.2022 The Minister - in fact it's not Dutton but Alex Hawke who'll be responsible for this - has shown that he's responsive to media coverage, A trend which I'm sure will continue until the next election but very sad that decision-making is not always based on fair, humane, objective criteria.

05.01.2022 An interesting proposal on how Australia could boost immigration levels during COVID-19: employers facing skills shortages, and workers seeking to migrate to Australia, could share the cost of travel, visa applications and quarantine periods. https://thenewdaily.com.au//15/immigration-economic-growth/

04.01.2022 Just a brief note to say I'll be in Germany after Christmas until 18 January - happy to be of help with migration issues during that period.
