17.01.2022 Over Christmas time, like Santa Claus, the volunteers of QPSR didnt rest. Having spent 2 months thoroughly cleaning the smoke box, saddle, and motion work of... the PB15 (and we mean every nook and cranny) in preparation for some front end repairs, we got to work forming new Copper Gaskets for where the steam pipes pass through the smokebox floor, on their way to the cylinders. The old Gaskets had been made of thin sheet metal and had warped and deteriorated after a good 10 years of heat (amazing for ordinary sheetmetal in THAT environment!), which allowed a large quantity of air to be drawn up from under the smokebox, which reduced the pull on the fire created by the exhaust steam from the cylinders as it blasts up the chimney. This reduces the locomotives ability to generate enough steam whilst under load. Our former Ipswich Railway Workshops Boilermaker, Peter Kenzler, taught some of our younger members how to cut the copper sheets to shape, anneal (soften) them (so they can be flanged without tearing) and then how to form the sheets to the required shape, using the old sheetmetal gaskets as a template. These gaskets are now fitted and are sealing "like a bought one." Our thanks to George Weston & Sons for providing us a really good price on these copper sheets. Copper is the preferred metal, as its softer than the steel steam pipes and will not rub a hole in the steam pipe as the metals expand and contract with the heating and cooling that is inevitable with steam locomotives. The former sheetmetal gaskets did not rub a hole in the pipes because whomever made them had the foresight to use a heat resistant, fibre strip between the flanges and the pipes. "Good thinking, Ninety-Nine!"
