10.01.2022 NOTICE: The contents of candidate statements are provided by the candidates to the Victorian Electoral Commission. Any enquiries about candidate statements shou...ld be directed to the relevant candidate. Candidate statements are not verified or endorsed by VEC/GSC Election Managers. CANDIDATES APPEAR HERE IN BALLOT PAPER ORDER WILSON, Gilbert "I offer myself to serve our Community. If re-elected I will strenuously represent you with strong decision making. I will continue calling out bad behaviour and disrespectful conduct. "A proud fifth-generation Portlander I have children and grandchildren living in Portland and Casterton. I am passionate about the Shire’s sustainability and prosperity for current and future generations of residents. I have held a strong commitment to our Shire over many years from involvement in sports, sports administration including twenty-two years in local government, three terms as Mayor. I will continue to listen to residents and act for the betterment of our communities across our Shire. "I support strong financial and environmental sustainability for our tourism industry, promoting natural beauty and many tourism experiences we have to offer. Strong support for World Heritage-listed Budj Bim, Great South West Walk, whales, Glenelg River along with the Shire’s iconic events. Strong planning decisions encourage industry and business into correct zonings. I support the great need for a new sporting complex that will increase the ability for basketball, netball, and other sports to increase their activities. Our connectivity needs infrastructure funding with safe bicycle and pedestrian paths connecting Maretimo, Dutton Way and Bridgewater to Portland CBD and foreshore. A footpath program to improve the connectivity of footpaths for Heywood residents. I will strive for better transparency from Council, including live internet access of Council meetings allowing residents the ability to watch their Council at work. This will also promote good governance and accountability for Councillors actions. I am passionate about continuing the fight for improving disability access and infrastructure across our Shire. I am a life member of: South West District Football League; Portland Basketball Association; Portland Basketball Referees Association; Dunlop B.C. I care and ask that you vote 1 Wilson, Gilbert." Mob: 0432 594 975 [email protected] - - - - - ALEXANDER, Malcolm "I am 55 years old and born in Portland i have lived and worked in the region most of my life and have been actively involved in the community through my profession as a plumber and through my apple and apple juice business as well as being involved with the community through my involvement with the rotary club of Portland bay and as a volunteer with the Gorae West CFA i am asking for your vote in the election as I want more transparency and to restore trust in local government, I have no private agenda other than to deliver honesty and integrity to the role of Councilor as well as convey the needs of the community to the CEO and hopefully deliver on the issues brought forward that are of concern to the individual and the wider community ensuring that our rates are going in the right places to make our shire a better place to live and a place where visitors feel happy and welcome and that there is work available in the future for our children and grandchildren to remain in the region and contribute to the viability of the area the balance of tourism and farming and forestry is a very important area as we need to keep the livability of the shire as a priority while there is a need for stability without turning into a giant industrial area the fantastic efforts put into events such as the upwelling, festival, wood wine and roses and the kelpie muster showcase our commitment to why we live where we live hopefully these events can be revived after the events that have effected all our lives this year and i am happy to talk more on whatever issues you may want to discuss." BH: (03) 5526 5246 Mob: 0438 265 380 [email protected] - - - - - RANK, Anita "I am running for council because I want to continue the momentum that has already been created in our shire. I have shown I have the ability to work with my fellow councilors to get results. "This has led to the roll out of major projects including the Foreshore Redevelopment and the Bridgewater Masterplan. But success does not come easy, it requires dedication, commitment and the ability to advocate at the highest level for more funding opportunities especially our sporting facilities. "This is something I will do. I have proven my capacity to lead and will show support for our major industries; renewable energy, manufacturing especially Alcoa, agriculture and aquaculture, forestry and transport. "We should also not forget the important contribution made by small business. Covid-19 has hit businesses and the creative arts sector hard and now more than ever they need our support. As the chair of the regions Suicide Prevention Taskforce and Headspace Portland, I fully understand the impact the virus has had on peoples mental health and wellbeing, thats why more than ever we need to stay connected especially with our young people. I will continue to advocate for the roll out of councils Tracks and Trails Strategy. Not only will this improve peoples health & wellbeing, it will also be a boost for our tourism. Tourism has and will continue to be a high priority for me. It has the potential to grow with improved branding and more marketing, across the shire. This includes better recognition for our cultural heritage. We need to do better at recognizing the contribution made by our traditional owners. It is a journey we need to take together to acknowledge our rich history. "I am proud of my achievements as Mayor, but I need your continued support for ongoing success." Mob: 0407 802 302 [email protected] - - - - - SMITH, Jayden M. "Hello, I’m Jayden Smith i am a young, driven, unbiased and unaffiliated candidate. I have lived in the Glenelg Shire my whole life cementing the fact it is an important place to me, from North to South, from East to West. "In my 26 years of life thus far I have watched the shire and the wider community change into a landscape that greatly requires young leadership. A leadership to inject some much needed diversity into our local government. These changes require equality. Equality is not just inclusion of people but also equal sharing of help from our shire, every person, every group and every town should have the opportunity to access the same resources across our great area. You, the residents of our shire deserve someone who will work tirelessly without the need for constant oversight and somebody who can be trusted to be a lone soldier in an environment of constant persuasion. "Come voting time the most important factor is in the work ethic of your candidates, i’m proud to come from a labouring blue collar background that has taught me to roll up my sleeves and get every job done, no excuses. I, Jayden Smith, would be honoured to work for you in a completely transparent manner." Mob: 0435 745 074 [email protected] - - - - - CARR, Michael If elected Michael Carr will ensure ratepayers get value for money, he will be accessible and approachable to all members of our community and work hard to see projects through to completion. Michael views running for Council as a logical extension of his already extensive community involvement and views this as an opportunity to continue to contribute to the Glenelg Shire. A lifelong Portland resident Michael grew up on the family farm at Gorae. After completing his education at local schools, he went on to study Civil Engineering at university before returning to Portland to live and work. He is married to Carly and the proud father to three young boys, Marius, Maximus and Monty. He has a strong understanding through personal experience when it comes to local industry. He was employed at Portland Aluminium for over ten years, working his way from a graduate position to Area Supervisor level before taking up his current role as Infrastructure Manager at the Port of Portland. Michael has volunteered across a range of organisations all his life. This includes the Portland Football Netball Cricket Club, including three years as president, The Bridgewater Lakes Aquatic Club, Junior Football Clubs, The Portland Basketball Association, and the Future Leaders of Industry. Highlights for Michael during his time as a volunteer have included the formation of the youth girls under 18 and open women’s football teams, The Hanlon park lighting project, turf wicket replacement project, construction of the female-friendly change rooms and the future leader’s graduation night. Michael’s envisions the Glenelg shire being an employment hub and thriving tourist destination that supports the recreational and educational needs of the community. With this experience I understand the impact that Covid has had on the entire Shire and will strive to get our economy moving again and rebuild our tourism sector through a vibrant marketing campaign, untapping Glenelg’s wonderful natural assets. "I will continue to listen to all ratepayers across the whole of the shire and ensure that council services meet the needs of the community, at all times. I will continue to push for funding to fix our road network to support our business sector and the safety of our community. I have a track record of getting things done, acting swiftly and decisively on issues that reflect community views. My experience as a councillor has enabled me to achieve many positive outcomes for the shire. Vote 1 Karen Stephens." Mob: 0417 527 200 [email protected] - - - - - NORTHCOTT, John "Married 47 years to Helen, three children and eight grand children. Farmer at Merino 5th generation, CV lists 50 years CFA member, 30 years Lions International and 32 years with Merino Bush Nursing/ Coleraine Hospital. I have been part of the Coleraine District Health Service; 16 years as Secretary Glenelg District Council VFF, nearly 45 years as VFF member and life member at the Tahara Cricket Club. "While on health boards I saw the development of Merino Community Health Centre and new Coleraine Hospital. I have experience in Local Government with 3 terms at Shire of Glenelg and 2 terms with Glenelg Shire. Having recently retired to Hamilton, I am keen to contribute to the Glenelg Shire. I believe there are very interesting times ahead. "There is a strong drift of people from Melbourne going to most towns in Southern/West Victoria. Unfortunately most times no children are coming with them, but these people need services and tradesmen etc. they are chasing lifestyle, security and peace. Service clubs may well have new member possibilities also. This drift has been going on for some time and will continue. Agriculture is strong in our reliable seasonal climate. A look around will see new silos, woolsheds, machinery & hay sheds, covered sheep/cattle yards, etc. These need steel, concrete, plumbing, electricians and so on. "An infrastructure lead recovery, builders are generally busy and you have to wait some time for them to arrive. Fencing contractors are busy also. If the shire supports this activity and education of young people through programs such as best wool, lamb, beef etc. I can only see higher production with potential six figure salaries following on. Support agriculture and the rest will follow. I look forward to your vote and a bright future, all being well!" Mob: 0490 830 621 [email protected] - - - - - WILSON, David No Statement Submitted Mob: 0427 233 991 [email protected] - - - - - HAWKER, Chrissy "A first-term councillor, I was elected in 2016, giving voters a fresh approach. I believe I am a progressive councillor. Portland was always home, with mother Kathleen, and my dear late father Jack McMahon, who was a postal worker. Siblings are my sister Frances and brother Kevin. "My community contribution to Council is 34 years of business experience and 25 years of sports management; I have always strived to offer reliable network ethics and professionalism in my role. "My qualifications are in Diploma in Sports Management and Human Resources. As a licensed security guard and Community Corrections (order) supervisor. Challenges Ahead: We face many life-altering challenges, for example, Covid-19 recovery plans, the future of Portland Aluminium. "We will need committed and competent councillors to ensure confidence, jobs are protected and new investment encouraged. Local government is about the people, and I want to ensure there is plenty of communication between the Council and communities being as always motivated and representing everyone fairly. Being impartial is paramount because we are not able to please every side to an issue. "We must make objective, accurate and strategic decisions for the best overall outcome for the people and employers. My commitment is to find solutions for tackling Methamphetamemes (ICE) abuse while providing everyone who wants to work with opportunities, improved facilities and increased retail growth. To do this we will push people beyond their comfort zones, sometimes; because progress means change. "If something isn't working we must explore innovation, creativity and robust analysis to improve the situation. "Areas of interest and knowledge are in sport, economic growth, tourism, community service, time management and a cool head in a crisis. If elected as an independent grassroots councillor, I will continue to listen, be accountable and work hard in achieving the best results for you." Mob: 0428 865 437 [email protected] - - - - - KOZAREVSKI, George "The Glenelg Shire is where my family, my home, my business (Bahloo Portland) and where my future is. Despite only living in Portland for 3 years, I experienced an instant connection to the community and knew that this was the right place to bring up my young family and to invest in our future. "The nonsense stops Now! : now is when the Glenelg Shire will unify. Now is when the North and South blocks stop and the Shire becomes one one way forward for the sole interest of the entire Glenelg Shire with greater transparency in decisions that impact residents. Kids/youth : I will work hard to develop greater options and opportunities for the young and the youth of the Glenelg Shire. "I will advocate creating a more resourceful environment providing valuable tools that can develop, encourage and empower the future leaders of this Shire. Older Adults: "I will develop and endorse a variety of opportunities to encourage positive aging for our older residents throughout the Glenelg Shire. These opportunities will exist by further developing strong connections, promoting social interactions, and provide inter-generational activities that will help maintain and improve the overall health and wellbeing of older adults. Small: medium business I will ensure there is a sharp focus on current and aspiring small to medium businesses within the Glenelg Shire. "I will advocate diversity and encourage an environment of entrepreneurship as an of enabler for growth and sustainability. As a small business owner, I understand the challenges, needs and support required to maintain a business and will endeavour to enrich economic growth within the Glenelg Shire to support development and sustainability." Mob: 0405 164 710 [email protected] - - - - - MARTIN, Scott ''I have been a business owner for 10+ years in the Glenelg shire with Bridgewater Bay café and most recently Goat and Tree café in Heywood. "The Glenelg shire stands at a crucial economic point in its history and I see its potential through the business experience, tourism knowledge and insight that I have gained over the years working within the community. "It is time the Glenelg shire moves away from its reliance on the Portland Aluminum Smelter and diversifies its opportunity for rates income and jobs reliance. The time to do this is now, not when the doors are closing and it is too late, we need action now. "Tourism and industry are two key pillars that will drive business growth throughout the shire and ultimately increase population, construction, jobs and the ability for the shire to increase its rates revenue while not increasing individual households rates. This benefits everyone, the more money the shire is able to spend, the better the services it can provide to young and old. Key projects like the Abalone farm, Kentbruck Wind farm, Budj Bim and the Cape Bridgewater Resort need to be seen through to completion, making sure the projects are delivered while balancing the needs of residents. These key projects will further grow existing industries like housing, hospitality, entertainment, retail and manufacturing whilst providing opportunity for diversity in the Glenelg Shires range of services to its residents. This will also bring further life into other towns like Heywood, Casterton, Dartmoor Cape Bridgewater, Nelson, Narrawong and Condah to name a few. The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing. It is time for change and it starts with your vote for me." Mob: 0414 990 801 [email protected] - - - - - McDONALD, Alistair "A resident of Portland for the past 64 years I am married to Lisa and we have a 20 year old son, Hamish. I was educated at Palmer Street and Portland High School. "My working life has been peppered with a variety of occupations, providing unique opportunities to meet people from all walks of life gaining respect for our growing culturally diverse community. Lisa and I own and operate the Portland Fish Market. I am a life member of the Portland Runners Club and a foundation and still active member of the Henty Food Producers Group and the Point Danger Management Committee. "If elected, I would continue to encourage the amazing diversity of tourism opportunities across the Shire with a specific interest in implementing the Tracks and Trail Strategy and seeing the completion of the Bridgewater and Portland foreshore master plans and the local port facilities. I will be a strong advocate in developing strategies to move forward and embrace opportunities in the food and fibre sector and in emerging new technologies, in particular the renewables sector, providing a sustainable future for our commerce and industry investment within the Shire. "I will continue to advocate for improvements and upgrades to the Shire’s sporting and art’s facilities, roads and services through funding avenues from State and Federal Governments. As a sitting councillor for the last four years I would value the chance to continue to make a positive and effective contribution to the Glenelg Shire." Alistair McDonald Mob: 0418 109 454 - - - - - WHITE, Geoff "In these uncertain times - where we need to find the right balance between protecting our lives and securing our livelihood, I want to continue contributing to meeting the challenges ahead for many in our community. I am a long time Portland resident married to Aileen and we are proud parents of four children. "My experience is Senior Manager at the Portland Harbour Trust, Glenelg Shire Councillor 1997 - 2020, four terms as Mayor, Regional Development Australia Committee member, foundation Chairman Bayview College Board, Chairman Victorian Alliance of 26 Councils for Rail Freight Development and leadership of other community organisations. "My task in the next council term is to further my vision of the shire becoming an economic, sustainable and liveability success story the envy of the rest of Victoria. I will be advocating strongly to attract investment, promote growth, tourism, job security and support our farming sector to deliver the outcomes you want to ensure future liveability for all our Shire communities. "My commitment to you is to apply a responsive approach to environmental issues, promote balanced economic development to create sustainable jobs that give our young people a future, support existing businesses and encourage new business opportunities, upgrade rail and road networks across the shire, guide our community post-covid-19 to achieve financial sustainability and growth and act swiftly and decisively on major issues to accurately reflect community views. "My record confirms I am a can do person who meets challenges and works for you to get the job done. I listen, act and deliver. If you share my vision for Glenelg Shire vote 1 for me. You will get a fiercely independent, experienced, fulltime Councillor working with dedication, energy and passion." Mob: 0419 883 390 [email protected] - - - - - PALMER, Alan "Our community will grow; Council outcomes will be for residents, in particular our oldest & youngest; they will receive programs of assistance to improve their health, wellbeing and lifestyle. Council will in practice prioritise support community groups and locally owned businesses; we will target better public transportation systems. "Our residents will have the confidence in the actions of their local government. My name is Alan Palmer. I have been a resident of Portland for six years. During my life I have run several businesses and held memberships of various community groups. I am currently retired, volunteering at Coast Guard Portland and a member at the Portland Bowling Club. I am the 2020 in-coming President of the mens section of the Portland bowling club. I choose retirement in the Glenelg shire as it is uniquely located in far southwest Victoria with rich natural seaside and hinterland features. "If I am elected to Council, I will work to secure outcomes for all residents, but in particular I will focus on the senior and junior residents of our shire. Sustainable population growth needs to be targeted and improvements to our transportation systems are a key to achieving this. Better roads, better public transport systems would be great; Reinstating our Passenger rail (& shipping/Freight for industry) would be the ultimate attractor for people to come and live in the Southwest. We have a deep water Port - why is it not connected to our Nations rail system. We need to continually promote and develop Tourism for the Southwest, but it needs to be safe as we emerge from the pandemic." Mob: 0498 497 834 [email protected] - - - - - McDONALD, R "I am standing for council with a vision of Creating Opportunities for our region, residents and families. Recently retired from a career in education, including 17 years at Bayview College, Portland, I can offer a full-time commitment as a councillor with the capacity to listen to and advocate for communities across the shire. "From experience in local residential and commercial property renovation and also as a retailer, I believe small business and innovative individuals can thrive on visitor and local support, while a diversity of larger industries provides clean green employment and training opportunities. "The potential to diversify our economy also exists through embracing local produce and cultural trails to connect with our smaller townships. With technology and the pandemic highlighting the advantages of working remotely, further attractions for new families and retirees to a regional lifestyle will be the provision of well-designed facilities and first class services. "I see sport, recreation and the arts as crucial to our physical, mental and social wellbeing, in building community connections and boosting health and self-esteem. Sound infrastructure, including well-maintained roads, is crucial for farmers and industry as well as ensuring safety and accessibility for all users, including cyclists. Council needs to protect our environment by encouraging sensitive development and eco-tourism, and promoting behavioural change towards reduction of waste and renewable energy use. "Given universal recognition that good design contributes to improved liveability of environments, and also significantly contributes to a more prosperous economy, I feel my background in Arts, Culture and Interior Design can add another perspective to progressive decision making for our shire. I remain optimistic that closer connections between community and council will promote a culture of respect and inclusivity, with more transparent consultation delivering the best possible outcomes." 08.01.2022 ATTENTION ALL GLENELG SHIRE VOTERS! You would have seen election advertisements of late attempting to sway people’s votes. I urge all GLENELG SHIRE VOTERS to NOT let anyone persuade your vote!!! Your voice matters and believe it or not you need to be heard. . So many community members have approached me to affirm how progression and positive change is needed within the Shire. These advertisements make transparent the alliances made through preference voting with candidate...s and will ultimately retain what we have now and may even drag the Shire to a different place. Take a close look at these advertisements and remember the candidates that are listed in the 2nd half of their sample cards. Most likely these are the people that the Shire needs for positive change. . The only way your voice can be heard is if you VOTE true to your words. Let your own opinion be the judgement of how you vote!!!! Let the way you vote reflect what you want for this community and what the Shire needs. . As quoted by Simon Sinek (which I hear very often by my wife is: The cost of leadership is self-interest. I ask you to all keep this in mind when you think about the future of this Shire. #thenonsensestopsnow Authorised by George Kozarevski (124 Cape Nelson Road, Portland) ***
