25.01.2022 Over the weekend, we had fun exploring the bushland around Simmos Beach in Campbelltown for a special walk and talk event. Participants had a great time learning about how the site is regenerating and about the native plants and animals that call the area home. A big thanks to the participants for coming out on a chilly spring afternoon, and thanks to Campbelltown City Council, NSW and Campbelltown City Council Bushcare for hosting. This project is funded through the NSW Environmental Trust Restoration and Rehabilitation grants program.
25.01.2022 These snorkel-like roots are the vertical, above ground pneumatophores of the grey mangrove. Grey mangroves live in wet and anaerobic (air-less) conditions which often smell strongly of sulphur. These roots stick out of the mud and help them to take in oxygen. 25.01.2022 Congratulations to our member Council Bayside Council who is a Finalist in the Overall Sustainable City Award and a Highly Commended in both the Circular Economy Award and the Coastal and Waterways Protection Award at the 2020 Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Sustainable Cities Awards
25.01.2022 Georges Riverkeeper supports Bayside Council in objecting to the request to discharge sewage overflow into Botany Bay. The land on the northern shoreline of Botany Bay was historically thought of as the 'backyard of the colony'. The shoreline now supports Sydney's international airport and one of Australia's largest seaports. Such intense developments and other past industries have consequences and there are legacy pollutants in the area. But, the bay is still also able to provide many recreational opportunities for the local community. Sewage discharges would diminish those opportunities, so on this occasion, we say please 'not in our backyard'. https://www.theleader.com.au//bayside-objects-to-sydney-/
25.01.2022 Fantastic results from this popular citizen science project about feathers. Researchers from ANSTO and UNSW have analysed a vast selection of feathers using nuclear techniques and gained an in-depth understanding of the water birds and the broader ecosystems they live in, including their diets and migratory patterns.

18.01.2022 Simmos Beach in Campbelltown was named after the rogue (but apparently likeable) sand miner Rob ‘Simmo’ Simmonds who operated illegally at the site until the late 1960s. Lots of rehabilitation has occurred at the site, and the main part of the reserve is now a glorious place for an easy bush walk, especially at this time of year. Rehabilitation works along the creekline flowing to the river have made great progress this year and although we’re not finished, we’re keen to show... you how different it looks. Rob ‘Dicko’ Dixon, the not so rogue (but apparently likeable) Riverkeeper will be able to answer all your questions during this short walk and talk. Click the link for (free) tickets! Due to COVID restrictions on numbers, if you plan on attending please follow the event bright link and register. THANKYOU.

11.01.2022 It’s scary how much plastic waste enters our waterways! The good news is you can do something about the evil plastic which clogs our river and endangers wildlife. Come down to Heron Park on Saturday 28 November and assist Conservation Volunteers Australia with one of their monthly events to clean the foreshore and raise awareness of the issue. 11.01.2022 Did you know mangroves are protected in NSW? In the past they were greatly undervalued and seen as a wasteland species to be cleared. Fortunately, our understanding of the value of mangroves has greatly improved in recent decades. Mangrove forests are now highly regarded, not only for the habitat they provide but because they act as a buffer, reducing erosion and helping to maintain water quality. Read more about marvelous mangroves on our website: https://georgesriver.org.au/learn-a/georges-river-mangroves
08.01.2022 Frogbit, salvinia, and water hyacinth are the three species that are being targeted by this Crime Stoppers campaign. Georges Riverkeeper supports this campaign to stop these devastating weeds from destroying our waterways. https://www.facebook.com/nswcrimestoppers/posts/3627119227298742?__cft__[0]=AZUUh8VxRBkoOo_Ja563pVWExb3sCNwya0Bgc75WceWUxQBPH8kqENHp_7lNaEiEIMXAY-IAJNW5wh8dBkHo4GmAJWfQA0ajsGnlXzlDjTR6FQoD-PIIJ_Pr-FzjBctx0u9v--CT34GLeG4JiVCvv0yORauhC9E7PwfTvdN1VgwAxw&__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R
08.01.2022 Everyone knows that echidnas have spines to help defend themselves but did you also know these fun facts? They have hind feet that point backwards and help to push soil away when they are burrowing. A young echidna is called a puggle. They have been known to live for as long as 16 years in the wild. They form mating trains in breeding season.... They have long sticky tongues that help them to slurp up food. They don’t have teeth (but their tongues help break up food in their mouths). In springtime, they are less reclusive and may be more easily spotted in the Georges River catchment. See more

It’s not too hot or cold, there’s plenty in bloom, and after the recent rain, the bushland around Campbelltown is looking spectacular. Come and join us for a short walk and talk and let us show you around the creekline we’ve been restoring and point out some of the interesting plants and animals. The area is koala territory so we’ll be on the look out for koala trees and scratchings. Click the link for (free) tickets! Due to COVID restrictions on numbers, if you plan on attending please follow the event bright link and register.
02.01.2022 It’s World Rivers’ Day! Why not plan a walk, ride , paddle or picnic along the Georges River? It’s a great day to enjoy everything our local waterways have to offer. Did you know that ‘ecosystems services’ is the technical name for the benefits that we humans freely obtain from the natural environment, including our waterways? Benefits include human well-being, food, health, livelihoods, and survival. It is estimated that the Georges River provides over $2 billion of... ecosystem services each year! Of course, the value of the river to humans is just one aspect of the river’s total value. It’s impossible to put a value on the intrinsic importance of the river for the plant and animal communities it sustains. For this reason, we’d like to highlight the collaborations that are helping to protect and rehabilitate the Georges River: THANK YOU to our member Councils for taking a collective responsibility for the Georges River and its catchment and for your Councillors’ and staff’s dedication to our programs: Bayside Council Sutherland Shire Council Georges River Council Fairfield City Council Liverpool City Council Australia City of Canterbury Bankstown Campbelltown City Council, NSW Wollondilly Shire Council THANK YOU to our partners for supporting projects to help clean up and rehabilitate the river, including the NSW Department of Communities and Justice Corrective Services Division, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Conservation Volunteers Australia, NSW Government through its Environmental Trust, and the Australian Government. THANK YOU to all the individuals and community groups for helping to prevent litter from ending up in the river, removing litter when it does, and helping to regenerate bushland in the catchment we are humbled by your dedication and commitment. Wondering how you can enjoy, help and learn about the Georges River? Jump on our website to find out: georgesriver.org.au : Matthew Vasilescu
