25.01.2022 How good is this! Congratulations everyone!

25.01.2022 Have you heard the buzz? It's Australian Pollinator Week! This fun citizen science project invites you to count wild pollinators in your local environment and help build a database on wild pollinator activity. You've got till 15 November to take part. Check out the website: https://wildpollinatorcount.com/

25.01.2022 Simmos Beach in Campbelltown was named after the rogue (but apparently likeable) sand miner Rob ‘Simmo’ Simmonds who operated illegally at the site until the late 1960s. Lots of rehabilitation has occurred at the site, and the main part of the reserve is now a glorious place for an easy bush walk, especially at this time of year. Rehabilitation works along the creekline flowing to the river have made great progress this year and although we’re not finished, we’re keen to show... you how different it looks. Rob ‘Dicko’ Dixon, the not so rogue (but apparently likeable) Riverkeeper will be able to answer all your questions during this short walk and talk. Click the link for (free) tickets! Due to COVID restrictions on numbers, if you plan on attending please follow the event bright link and register. THANKYOU.

24.01.2022 Live in the Bayside area? Let Council know what you'd like to use the green corridors running through the area for. Nature trails? Birdwatching? Bike riding? https://haveyoursay.bayside.nsw.gov.au/planningourgreenspac

23.01.2022 Fairfield has a network of cycle ways and paths that transect the area. Many of the paths follow the five creeks that meander down to the Georges River. One of the best is the Bay to Mountains Path which follows Orphans School Creek (which is a tributary of Prospect Creek which flows into the Georges River). It has number public artworks including a fish habitat mosaic, a Cabramatta history wall and a fish and dragons display. As you walk or ride keep an eye out for wildlif...e; water dragons, turtles, and (invasive but impressive) carp call the creek and riparian area home. Remember, before setting out, please check the latest NSW Health advice regarding COVID-19 restrictions. Further info about these bike paths at https://www.fairfieldcity.nsw.gov.au/Com/Healthy-Fairfield Pictured here is one of the paths along the main estuary. Fairfield City Council

23.01.2022 These snorkel-like roots are the vertical, above ground pneumatophores of the grey mangrove. Grey mangroves live in wet and anaerobic (air-less) conditions which often smell strongly of sulphur. These roots stick out of the mud and help them to take in oxygen. 23.01.2022 Fantastic results from this popular citizen science project about feathers. Researchers from ANSTO and UNSW have analysed a vast selection of feathers using nuclear techniques and gained an in-depth understanding of the water birds and the broader ecosystems they live in, including their diets and migratory patterns.

22.01.2022 A new Crime Stoppers campaign is currently targeting crimes that are having a devastating effect on our waterways. This campaign has Georges Riverkeeper's % support! https://www.facebook.com/nswcrimestoppers/posts/3632082833469048?__cft__[0]=AZXkSn4ayYNC6aP6kMxl9MWmDfPmUnP2UHDYUsLDmg6-9ieHoaHh0ZljqFnEiQA1GXRw6ffqB1vwj0W_38L4Gg5CTngPMvf1qZA6SOyw0PHE6hFUXUei1MPjLkVwHGL5ZVSOuYoXD329rVwKktvQIlyHaJSp8XbE6eng6nI6CbL9lQ&__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R

22.01.2022 Did you know mangroves are protected in NSW? In the past they were greatly undervalued and seen as a wasteland species to be cleared. Fortunately, our understanding of the value of mangroves has greatly improved in recent decades. Mangrove forests are now highly regarded, not only for the habitat they provide but because they act as a buffer, reducing erosion and helping to maintain water quality. 22.01.2022 Everyone knows that echidnas have spines to help defend themselves but did you also know these fun facts? They have hind feet that point backwards and help to push soil away when they are burrowing. A young echidna is called a puggle. They have been known to live for as long as 16 years in the wild. They form mating trains in breeding season.... They have long sticky tongues that help them to slurp up food. They don’t have teeth (but their tongues help break up food in their mouths). In springtime, they are less reclusive and may be more easily spotted in the Georges River catchment. See more

20.01.2022 Over the weekend, we had fun exploring the bushland around Simmos Beach in Campbelltown for a special walk and talk event. Participants had a great time learning about how the site is regenerating and about the native plants and animals that call the area home. A big thanks to the participants for coming out on a chilly spring afternoon, and thanks to Campbelltown City Council, NSW and Campbelltown City Council Bushcare for hosting. This project is funded through the NSW Environmental Trust Restoration and Rehabilitation grants program.

20.01.2022 Spring is the perfect time of year to be out enjoying the bush. It’s not too hot or cold, there’s plenty in bloom, and after the recent rain, the bushland around Campbelltown is looking spectacular. Come and join us for a short walk and talk and let us show you around the creekline we’ve been restoring and point out some of the interesting plants and animals. The area is koala territory so we’ll be on the look out for koala trees and scratchings. Click the link for (free) tickets! Due to COVID restrictions on numbers, if you plan on attending please follow the event bright link and register.

18.01.2022 Georges Riverkeeper supports Bayside Council in objecting to the request to discharge sewage overflow into Botany Bay. The land on the northern shoreline of Botany Bay was historically thought of as the 'backyard of the colony'. The shoreline now supports Sydney's international airport and one of Australia's largest seaports. Such intense developments and other past industries have consequences and there are legacy pollutants in the area. But, the bay is still also able to provide many recreational opportunities for the local community. Sewage discharges would diminish those opportunities, so on this occasion, we say please 'not in our backyard'. https://www.theleader.com.au//bayside-objects-to-sydney-/

18.01.2022 This is a wonderful spot to swim in Botany Bay in summer! It's good news to hear the replacement swimming enclosure netting at Monterey Baths is being installed.

18.01.2022 Flash-back Friday! This historic bridge crossing Prospect Creek is currently being restored. What's your favourite bridge crossing the Georges River or one of its tributaries?

14.01.2022 Next week, local Councils, NSW EPA and DPIE will be out in force across Sydney and the Hunter Coast inspecting developments of all sizes to ensure #builders and #renovators GET THE SITE RIGHT and have correct erosion and sediment controls in place. In the Georges River catchment, the Blitz dates are: Wednesday 21 Oct for City of Canterbury Bankstown, Georges River Council, Liverpool City Council Australia and Sutherland Shire Council.... Monday 19 Oct to Friday 23 Oct for Campbelltown City Council, NSW Local councils and the NSW EPA have the power to issue penalties from $8000 to $15,000 for each incidence of non-compliance. 13.01.2022 Frogbit, salvinia, and water hyacinth are the three species that are being targeted by this Crime Stoppers campaign. Georges Riverkeeper supports this campaign to stop these devastating weeds from destroying our waterways. https://www.facebook.com/nswcrimestoppers/posts/3627119227298742?__cft__[0]=AZUUh8VxRBkoOo_Ja563pVWExb3sCNwya0Bgc75WceWUxQBPH8kqENHp_7lNaEiEIMXAY-IAJNW5wh8dBkHo4GmAJWfQA0ajsGnlXzlDjTR6FQoD-PIIJ_Pr-FzjBctx0u9v--CT34GLeG4JiVCvv0yORauhC9E7PwfTvdN1VgwAxw&__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R

12.01.2022 Look at this majestic creature! It's a Powerful Owl, one of the largest #owl species in Australia. This owl feeds on possums, and can often (but not in this pic) be seen roosting in the shade in the daytime with last night's prey in its talons.

12.01.2022 Lots of water falling today - splashing off the hard surfaces and running down the drain into our waterways. The fast flow can lead to erosion and take litter, sediment and weeds to the river. This video was taken earlier today with Georges Riverkeeper Program Manager Beth Salt at Oyster Creek Gully*, one of our project sites, where flashy stormwater flows degrade the creek and riparian area. The works we've done along the creek line will go some way to mitigating the impact ...of stormwater, however, you can do your bit too. Remember, what goes down the drain ends up in our waterways! And if you can stop the water from going down the drain in the first place, by using a rain garden or rain barrel around your house, then you can prevent some of that rain going down the drain and use it at a later time. And while we're talking about all the things you should do, if you're building or renovating make sure you Get the Site Right for days like today and everyday. * This project is funded through the NSW Environmental Trust Restoration and Rehabilitation grants program with the support of Sutherland Shire Council and Sutherland Shire Bushcare

06.01.2022 It’s World Rivers’ Day! Why not plan a walk, ride , paddle or picnic along the Georges River? It’s a great day to enjoy everything our local waterways have to offer. Did you know that ‘ecosystems services’ is the technical name for the benefits that we humans freely obtain from the natural environment, including our waterways? Benefits include human well-being, food, health, livelihoods, and survival. It is estimated that the Georges River provides over $2 billion of... ecosystem services each year! Of course, the value of the river to humans is just one aspect of the river’s total value. It’s impossible to put a value on the intrinsic importance of the river for the plant and animal communities it sustains. For this reason, we’d like to highlight the collaborations that are helping to protect and rehabilitate the Georges River: THANK YOU to our member Councils for taking a collective responsibility for the Georges River and its catchment and for your Councillors’ and staff’s dedication to our programs: Bayside Council Sutherland Shire Council Georges River Council Fairfield City Council Liverpool City Council Australia City of Canterbury Bankstown Campbelltown City Council, NSW Wollondilly Shire Council THANK YOU to our partners for supporting projects to help clean up and rehabilitate the river, including the NSW Department of Communities and Justice Corrective Services Division, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Conservation Volunteers Australia, NSW Government through its Environmental Trust, and the Australian Government. THANK YOU to all the individuals and community groups for helping to prevent litter from ending up in the river, removing litter when it does, and helping to regenerate bushland in the catchment we are humbled by your dedication and commitment. 06.01.2022 If you see a Red-eared Slider Turtle, report the sighting to the NSW Department of Primary Industries on 1800 680 244.

06.01.2022 The big rains earlier in the year saw water rushing down the Oyster Creek Gully site in Sutherland Shire. The water was supercharged by urban stormwater systems which deliver rainwater to the creek much faster than if the catchment was all bushland. Fortunately, much of the creek line is rocky sandstone and is not susceptible to erosion. However, the softer sediment at the bottom of the site was starting to get eaten away! This jute mat will help to protect from future erosi...on until the hardy plants such as Lomandras and Carex help to stabilise the banks. For those who live in the area, you can help out this creek too by joining one of the four Sutherland Shire Bushcare groups which help to look after this important remnant from threats such as stormwater. This Project is funded through the NSW Environmental Trust Restoration and Rehabilitation grants program.
