01.01.2022 Our #throwbackthursday today is an excerpt from The Propellor following Armistice celebrations at Mortdale in 1918. "On Wednesday last a procession, followed by - sports in Judd's Paddock, were arranged by a hastily formed committee at Mortdale, who carried out affairs creditably. The school children formed in procession at Railway Square, Mortdale. Included in the procession were the "Mortdale Light Horse," (12 of Judd's draught horses), the " Mi Mi Blacks," " Mortdale Way ...Backs," and many other fancy costumes and turn outs. The procession marched through Penshurst and Mortdale and finished at Judd's Paddock, where refreshments were provided by the ladies. The sports were a great success, and the children occasionally had a "war" among themselves. The prizes and refreshments were donated by the local tradespeople and residents. A memorable day was concluded with the burning of ex-Kaiser Bill after a mock trial before Judge Bacon and a jury of six representatives of the Allies." Propeller, 22 November 1918, p.2. #tbt #GeorgesRiverHistory #remembranceday #armistice #mortdale See more
