19.01.2022 Sharing our beaches with shorebirds Users of Tasmania’s beaches are reminded that they are sharing the beach with breeding shorebirds and penguins which are vul...nerable to the impacts of people and their pets. Between October and March, shorebirds are breeding and it’s also this time that we love going to the beach to fish, surf, swim and walk in the sun. Breeding shorebirds lay very well camouflaged eggs on the dry sand in simple shallow nests called scrapes. The newly hatched chicks can only run for about a month or so until they grow some flight feathers. The eggs and chicks are all very vulnerable to threats such as accidental trampling by people, horses and vehicles, predation by cats, dogs and rats and general disturbance on the beach. Beach users can help to look after shorebirds and penguins by: Walking dogs on designated dog-friendly beaches only (check the signs) and keeping them on a lead. Walk on the wet sand as shorebirds nest on the dry sand. If birds are seen nesting, give them space and don’t disturb them. Keep our beaches clean by taking your rubbish with you. De-sex cats and keep them in at night they are very efficient predators of native birds. 19.01.2022 Have you done the social distancing dance? Its that dance we do because we dont quite know how to greet people anymore. As we negotiate the foot taps and head nods, the endless cleaning and keeping our distance, has social distancing also changed the way we feel about things? In this episode the wonderful Maureen Lacey and Kylie Moore explain how theyve adapted to the changes, plus Bianca Welsh talks about how changes may have affected our relationship with work. Dr Ni...cholas Hookway, Senior Lecturer in Sociology at University of Tasmania helps us to understand loneliness and its distinction from social isolation. Then we check back in again with Mental Health Clinician Caroline Thain whos got some great hacks for reminding others to maintain their distance without assigning blame, and Clinical Psychologist David Bakker is back to help us understand and do self-care. Its another big episode and you can listen here: Best for mobiles: www.playpodca.st/healthspeak Best for computers: https://player.whooshkaa.com/episode?id=728201

16.01.2022 Is your child ‘asthma ready’ for school? School’s almost over and it’s nearly time for the summer break. But just because school stops, doesn’t mean your child’s asthma management does. Every year there is a sharp rise in the number of asthma flare-ups for children when they return to school after the holidays. This results in a significant increase in Emergency Department visits, hospitalisations and days off school. Not only is this unsettling for children as they start a ...new year at school, but often it impacts on time off work for parents or carers also. Learn more about what you can do now and over the holidays to ensure your child’s asthma control is maintained or improved and how we can support you to achieve this. https://asthma.org.au//asthma/ask-about-asthma-in-schools/

Annually Forico supplies domestic and international markets with 1.7 million tonnes of wood fibre harvested from their own renewable plantations, delivering approximately $130 million of gross revenue into the Tasmanian economy. Forico is another great example of a local operation servicing global markets, using renewable resources and sustainable practices. You can learn more about Forico at https://youtu.be/8UaUbH2G96w

07.01.2022 LOCAL HEALTH SPEAK PODCAST TO BUILD RESILIENCE DURING COVIC-19 A new series of Health Speak podcasts hosted by Healthy Tasmania Pty Ltd as part of the George To...wn Councils Healthy George Town initiative will focus on helping community members be resilient during COVID-19 conditions. Funded through a $10,000 partnership between Bell Bay Aluminium and George Town Council, a series of five special episodes focuses on supporting community members to re-enter the world with the key skills they need to live well during a pandemic. The partnership is one of a number of major investments the smelter has supported in the George Town municipality as part of a US$25 million commitment Rio Tinto has made to support communities around the globe during the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery, through its Partnership to Progress program. Bell Bay Aluminium general manager Shona Markham said, We are delighted to support this series of podcasts in partnership with the George Town Council. People are craving information that will support and help them through this pandemic and they want it from a trusted source like Healthy Tasmanias Creative Director and host of Health Speak, Penny Terry. As well as talking to experts, Penny has been out in our local community and into businesses to see what people are doing to deal with this pandemic, as we all do our best to live through and recover from it. I am looking forward to listening to this new series for some tips from the experts. Designed to provide listeners with a COVID kit of life skills to live well during the pandemic, each episode shares real stories and practical tips to help community members cope with change; including managing stress and blame, creating healthy habits and dropping bad ones, managing new processes and supporting others well, reducing loneliness, and even how to manage pandemic-exhaustion. Host Penny Terry said, This podcast is like being given a list of the best life-hacks for living through a pandemic. It has been incredible to hear community members share their experiences, thoughts and challenges so honestly and openly, it is the stuff we do not usually get to hear. When combined with some simple tips from the experts, this podcast is an interesting, easy and fun way to work out what life skills will truly be useful right now. George Town Mayor Greg Kieser said, Funded by Council in April at the height of the pandemic, the initial Health Speak podcast delivered enormous benefits to our community at a time of great uncertainty. It recorded excellent listener reach across our municipality and the State. Council believes the next instalment of Health Speak podcasts funded by Bell Bay Aluminium will be extremely valuable to listeners, in what we hope will continue to be the recovery stage of the pandemic in Tasmania. Series three of Health Speak launches on Thursday, 20 August.
