Soknoeun talks about what it's like coming back to Sunrise and what it's meant for her, her life and her career. 24.01.2022 Meet Geraldine Cox, fondly known as the grandmother of the University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS). She has been a part of the Humanitarian Affairs Asi...a family for the last 10 years since the beginning of the USLS and has inspired thousands of delegates with her heart-warming stories on life and its lessons. Geraldine started her career with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 1970. She was sent to Phnom Penh for her first career post, where she encountered life in Cambodia during the Vietnam War. This experience left Geraldine shocked and horrified. Despite leaving Cambodia for a period of time, Geraldine refused to turn a blind eye to the displaced children as a result of the war. Geraldine then made a bold decision to move back to Cambodia in 1996 to help children in dire need. With a determined mind and heart, Geraldine established the Sunrise Children Villages, giving hope, a loving home and an opportunity for an education to Cambodia’s vulnerable children. Sunrise Cambodia has since expanded, and so has her vision to focus on rebuilding lives through sustainable community development. Whilst her journey was not always smooth, she overcame every possible hindrance and stayed devoted to helping the future of Cambodia. Her story highlights the real difference one person can make. From heart-break to triumph, Geraldine shared with USLS delegates a profound enlightenment: The greatest currency you can have is how you affect others, so always be kind to people as people will remember how you made them feel. #IamHAfamily #GeraldineCox #SunriseCambodia #USLS #throughtheyears #togetherwestand

21.01.2022 Circa 1965. Eiffel Tower and Edinburgh Castle. It wasn't common for women my age to be travelling the world alone back then. But I was never one to stick by the rules! It's incredible to think that Cambodia had not even entered my life when these photos were taken. So much has changed, but my spirit of adventure is still fully alive. P.S.: Follow my Instagram account for more of my personal stories. IG: @mumgeraldine

19.01.2022 Today is my 75th birthday. The last few months leading up to it have no doubt been the most challenging ones of my life. There is nothing that I could ask for on my birthday for myself, but I wanted to share this very special message with all of you. Love and Light. Geraldine. 15.01.2022 Child sponsorship changes their life and yours. Your support gives them food, safety, clothing, access to education and, most importantly, a home. To sponsor a child, go here: sunrisecambodia.org.au/sponsor/
15.01.2022 During Covid 19 I have greatly missed seeing all the Community and Outreach children we help. Unfortunately with the Sunrise School closed I do not see their happy, little faces arriving each day. Of course this too shall pass. In the meantime I am so lucky to have the company of Sunny and Snookie. They are both so loyal to the kids and myself. I have always been a lover of animals. Something I have been able to pass on to all the children I mentor. Where would we be in life ...without them? Hope you are all keeping well and safe. Love Geraldine x x x
14.01.2022 One of our teenagers, Kanchana was rushed to hospital with a suspected burst appendix. She is fine now but bored in the hospital. They do not have radio or TV in the hospitals here and one of our staff also has to stay with her and give her her meals as hospitals also do not provide any meals. I took her some cakes which cheered her up.
13.01.2022 Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) we’ve had to make the decision to close our centres to external visitors. We love how many supporters come to see how we look ...after the children in our care - and the donations and gifts for the kids you often bring - but right now we have to put their health, and that of all the support staff, first. If you’d still like to support us during this difficult time what would help the most is a donation so that we can continue this important work: Donate here: http://bit.ly/SunriseCambodia Sponsor a child: http://bit.ly/SunriseSponsorship
12.01.2022 I was blown away this weekend at my home by a surprise visit and birthday party from my older children. Some of them even brought their families and children along. Even in these difficult times, and although most of them are facing financial struggles, they bought cakes and enough food to cook up a delicious curry for all of us. I felt so loved, that I would not have wanted to be anybody else in the world that day.
12.01.2022 Please read my letter, spread the word and help if you can
09.01.2022 Today I would like to share with you the talent of one of our boys, Phannat. Not only is he an amazing musician, but also a loyal friend and wonderfully kind human being. I also found out today that he was the ringleader behind my surprise birthday party. Thank you Phannat! I couldn't be prouder.
08.01.2022 The Sunrise story is one of dedicated people - supporters, staff, ex-students and more - working together to change the lives of vulnerable children. Today we'd like to take a moment to say thank you for everything you have done to improve the future for generations of Cambodian kids
07.01.2022 I recently attended my monthly get together with the graduated boys from Sunrise. The former Sunrise kids have an unbreakable bond with Sunrise and still consider me their 'Big Mum'. We all went to the recently opened restaurant of Monitha and Oeun our former music and dance teachers, who retired from teaching. It was wonderful to renew this relationship with them and so special for all who attended!
05.01.2022 "Here are three very poor families in the community near us who were deeply affected by COVID-19 and were in urgent need of assistance. Sunrise came to their aid and the food supplies we gave were very much appreciated." ~ Geraldine Cox AM
