22.01.2022 Holy Thursday or Maundy Thursday - Mass of the Last Supper

22.01.2022 What a speech by Pope Francis yesterday! Worth a read regardless of your faith *You can have flaws, be anxious, and even be angry, but do not forget that you...r life is the greatest enterprise in the world. Only you can stop it from going bust. Many appreciate you, admire you and love you. Remember that to be happy is not to have a sky without a storm, a road without accidents, work without fatigue, relationships without disappointments. To be happy is to find strength in forgiveness, hope in battles, security in the stage of fear, love in discord. It is not only to enjoy the smile, but also to reflect on the sadness. It is not only to celebrate the successes, but to learn lessons from the failures. It is not only to feel happy with the applause, but to be happy in anonymity. Being happy is not a fatality of destiny, but an achievement for those who can travel within themselves. To be happy is to stop feeling like a victim and become your destinys author. It is to cross deserts, yet to be able to find an oasis in the depths of our soul. It is to thank God for every morning, for the miracle of life. Being happy is not being afraid of your own feelings. Its to be able to talk about you. It is having the courage to hear a "no". It is confidence in the face of criticism, even when unjustified. It is to kiss your children, pamper your parents, to live poetic moments with friends, even when they hurt us. To be happy is to let live the creature that lives in each of us, free, joyful and simple. It is to have maturity to be able to say: "I made mistakes". It is to have the courage to say "I am sorry". It is to have the sensitivity to say, "I need you". It is to have the ability to say "I love you". May your life become a garden of opportunities for happiness ... That in spring may it be a lover of joy. In winter a lover of wisdom. And when you make a mistake, start all over again. For only then will you be in love with life. You will find that to be happy is not to have a perfect life. But use the tears to irrigate tolerance. Use your losses to train patience. Use your mistakes to sculptor serenity. Use pain to plaster pleasure. Use obstacles to open windows of intelligence. Never give up .... Never give up on people who love you. Never give up on happiness, for life is an incredible show.* (Pope Francis).

21.01.2022 On St Valentine’s Day we remember that Love is God and God is Love. That is why we all know in the depth of honest hearts that atheism is a nonsense as we all k...now love is real and alive, so then is God. Love and God are the same reality. To say one doesn’t believe in God is as absurd as saying one doesn’t believe in love. The symbol of Love/God is spelt out in the Arts and Crafts Movement images in John Hawes’ many churches including St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral, Geraldton, particularly in the image of the heart. Here are four examples from the Geraldton Cathedral.

15.01.2022 Hi Everyone Yesterday I received the email below from Johann Vexo, Choir Organist of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, sharing with us a video to mark the first an...niversary of the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral. You may recall that Johann gave an amazing concert in our Cathedral in February last year together with Damien Riviere. We wish Johann and Damien the very best at this time and look forward to seeing and hearing them in our wonderful Geraldton Cathedral in the not too distant future. In the meantime, enjoy the video below. Fr Robert Cross Dear friends, Im pleased to share with you the video that former and current musicians of Notre-Dame, Paris recorded for the first - and sad - anniversary of the Cathedral fire. You may also share it with your friends if you like it! I hope to see you again before too long. Very best wishes, especially during this hard time for the world Johann https://youtu.be/jsq86NfU_ao

11.01.2022 REFLECTION ON THE ROMAN MISSALS ILLUSTRATION FOR TODAYS SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY The following image adorns the Roman Missal fo...r todays Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It dates to the 12th century and comes from "Psautier dIngeburg de Danemark" (Psalter of Ingeburg of Denmark) as do all the illustrations in the Catholic Truth Societys publication of the 3rd edition of The Roman Missal. (See below a short note on Ingeburg and her marriage to King Philip II of France.) Medieval religious art was a means of conveying religious truths and doctrines at a time when many were illiterate in terms of reading and writing. But illiteracy in reading and writing didnt mean they were ignorant. They were literate in their ability to read and understand religious and sacred art. Regretfully, so many today, including many artists and those who teach art, are illiterate when it comes to "reading" and understanding and appreciating religious and sacred art. It is an "art" we might all (including myself) consider recovering in the Church today, as religious and sacred art has a capacity to touch us deeply and passionately and be a powerful tool for evangelization. In this image, what particularly appeals to me is the beautiful if not unusual illustration of Christ holding a child (see lower panel of illustration). We are used to images and statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the Christ child - the Theotokos, meaning - God bearer. But images or statues of Christ holding a child are rare from my experience. But look carefully and you will notice that the child is a female. This young girl is the immaculate Blessed Virgin Mary. The Theotokos is now carried by Christ and born (or should we say borne) by Him into eternal life, just as Mary once gave birth to Christ into and this earthly world and bore him unto us, she who is the Ark of the New and Eternal Covenant is now assumed into eternal life by her Son. Where she has gone we one day hope to follow! As an aside, it is interesting to note that the Psalter was written and illustrated for a female reader, Ingeburg, the Queen of France. She would no doubt have deeply appreciated the subtlety of the artist in portraying Marys Assumption into Heaven in this manner. NOTE ON INGEBURG: Ingeburg married Philip II of France in 1193 but Philip disputed the canonical legitimacy of the marriage the day after it was celebrated but the validity was upheld by the Church. As a consequence Philip had Ingeburg locked away for most of their married life in castles, convents and abbeys. Philip II married again and the Pope declared it invalid, which Philip tried to ignore. Pope Innocent IIIs response at one stage was to place Philip and the whole French Kingdom under Interdict (suspension of pubic religious rites e.g. Mass) in 1199 for one year. Interesting times and reminiscent of King Henry VIII!

09.01.2022 Light streams into the Cathedral leaving heavenly reflections on the altar and sanctuary terrazzo pavement. One of the features of the Cathedral is the different character it takes on depending on the location of the sun as it transits the day.

08.01.2022 In todays Gospel Christ asks, Who do you say I am? Christ is the Son of the living God and we are the living stones of His Body the Church. Yesterday the Old... Boys of St Pats got together to reminisce and celebrated Mass in Australias most amazing Cathedral. There they cried out their identity with the famous Boomalacka chant, Who are, who are, who are we? We are the sons of the SPC (St Patricks College) - the living stones on which the Church is built, and how alive are they as they boom out the boomalacka! A huge thank you to Russell Canistrini for organising the reunion!!!! See more
