25.01.2022 When you exhibit your art work it is customary to provide a blurb to be hung besides your art piece. It can be as simple as your name, the art works title and the media used to create it. For commercial reasons you can include the pieces dimensions, weight, price and any other relevant details (will melt in direct sunlight etc.) You can also include what inspired your piece, name collaborators, when it was made, and dedicate it to a person you admire. ... It can be as short as a few lines or run to a foolscap page. You can also coordinate the label to match your work with design or colour. So long as it is readable, the sky is the limit! For our upcoming exhibit we will be doing similar labels for all our artists. They will list Artist: in 16px Font, and in 14px font Title: In Italics Medium: and Price: if applicable, or Not For Sale if not. Art labels are usually mounted on white foam board so as not to be damaged. We have mounted ours on black foam board. The labels can be printed on sticky backed paper, but we printed ours on normal paper and took the extra step of cutting them in to interesting shapes then colouring the edges in soft chalks. The paper labels were stuck onto the foam board with a glue stick, and the air bubbles removed with a hard rubber roller. Then we added a touch more bling for interest! Hope you found this helpful! Come and check out our Art Labels (and our Art!) at Saint John of God Hospital on the 16th of June, 5.30pm to 8.

20.01.2022 Welcome to the Winter Solstice! A solstice happens when the sun's zenith is at its furthest point from the equator. On the June solstice, it reaches its northernmost point and the Earth’s North Pole tilts directly towards the sun. It's also known as the northern solstice because it occurs when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere. Picture by Lynda Mason

08.01.2022 So, art lovers, you are going to a gallery opening. What can you say about a picture you like? What will you think about a picture you like? Me, I think - that would look nice with my curtains. I am not that deep. What else can we think about when looking at a picture? Here are some things I Googled, because I am lazy too. Enjoy!... 1) Does my opinion about the artwork change the longer I look at it? 2) How did this artist use space? 3) Has the artist lead your eye into their piece? How? 4) If this painting had sound effects, what would they be? 5) What’s the story being told, if any? 6) What do you think happened next? 7) What do you want to remember about this artwork? 8) Who do you know that would really like this artwork? 9) Who do you think was this artwork was created for? 10) Would it go better in my lounge room or bedroom? Pictured, Snow Horse by Beryl Grace.

05.01.2022 One of our members has just started oil painting. She had been happy doing other things in other media, but was looking to express something different, and she has done an amazing job! Have you ever thought about trying something new? We have a small collection of oil and acrylic paints, some pastels and charcoals available for people to try if they want. Just ask and they can be brought out for you to try! We have some paintbrushes and pallet knives too, but you may have to ...ask if anyone has any spare paper for you to buy or borrow. There are some canvases here that can be brought too (we brought them for a project that hasn't gone ahead yet, but they will have to be replaced - hence you 'buying' them from us). Trying out new things can open up all sorts of possibilities, and using the clubs extra stuff makes sure you can have a go without investing heavily first. So have a go, and remember we have lots of artists that have used different media that can lend you a hand as well! Pictured - a club project showing a range of media. We have some talented artists here!
