25.01.2022 15 years of the wonderful, Carolyn Pegler! Carolyn Pegler has worked at Ngala (and formally the Geraldton Regional Community Education Centre) for a whopping 15 years! This month we said farewell as she is retiring. Jenny Allen, Ngala Executive Manager Operations says "I cannot speak highly enough of the contributions Carolyn has made to our organisation, our Midwest and Gascoyne teams and the children, young people and families across the region. I cant even begin to ima...gine how many kilometres she has travelled." Carolyn, we are so very grateful to have you as part of our team, we will miss you dearly. Enjoy a much deserved retirement, tending to your beautiful garden and house overlooking the ocean - and spending time with your grandchildren. Your Ngala Family

22.01.2022 Today, we invite Western Australians to celebrate with us, as we recognise our 130th Birthday! Ngala is proud to reach this distinctive milestone of 130 years of providing support and guidance to Western Australian families; guidance that has the power to give parents and carers a sigh of relief and a feeling that theyre in safe hands with our team. In 2020, Ngala is an industry leader in early childhood intervention, but this is just the latest incarnation of an organisati...on that has undergone a number of rebirths in more than a century of operation. Today, Ngala runs 38 different programs and services for children from 0 to 18 years, including early learning and development centres, programs for Indigenous families, a parenting line and the Ngala Hospital. At Ngala we believe every child deserves the opportunity to be their best, and that parenting should be a joyful and rewarding experience. Join us over the next 12 months, as we reflect on our past and look towards another 130 years of supporting and guiding Western Australian families.

22.01.2022 You may have seen our previous post about Carolyn Pegler retiring. Minh Henderson has taken over the Parenting Connection WA role in the Gascoyne. So before Carolyn officially clocked off, she added in one last regional road trip and travelled up to Carnarvon and Exmouth. Carolyn also travelled with Taylavie, who is Geraldton's current Social Work Student from Perth. Taylavie was keen to jump onboard to travel and learn more about working in the region. The ladies met with local networks and discussed how Ngala can continue to support families in the Gascoyne.

21.01.2022 Did you know that the number of family and domestic violence-related victims increased in Western Australia by 10% between 2018 and 2019? This translates to 19,437 people experiencing family and domestic violence in just one year! It’s frightening statistics like this one that drive Ngala to throw our support behind the WA-led campaign for change - 16 Days in WA to Stop Violence Against Women. Commencing today on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Wo...men, 16 Days in WA works to promote equality and respectful relationships, violence-free spaces and safer communities, all key elements in stopping violence against women. The theme for the 2020 campaign is ‘Respect starts with you’. There is no quick fix to WA’s high rates of family and domestic violence, but we hope that education and shining a light on violence against women, will develop generational change, which is crucial if we are to achieve long-term success and stop gender-based violence in our communities for good. One in five (or 25% of) Western Australian women reported experiencing partner violence since the age of 15 63% of assaults in WA were family and domestic-violence related in 2019 11,975 family violence restraining orders were lodged in Western Australia in 2018-19, equalling 75% of the total restraining orders filed. As many as 56% of youth homelessness cases in Western Australia are linked to family and domestic violence. Family and domestic violence is a leading cause of women’s homelessness. Domestic violence accounted for 55.8% of the accommodation support from specialist homelessness agencies in WA in 2017-18, up from 45.1% in 2012-13.10 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women account for 67% of hospitalisations due to family and domestic violence in WA

21.01.2022 Can boys have long hair? Can girls play football? Can girls be Builders and boys be Nurses? . Our Strong Self Strong Spirit participants recently shared conversations about how boys and girls are actually in fact, quite similar. This activity really showcased that we can be anything we want to and it doesn't matter if we are a boy or a girl. ... . This activity kicks off today the "16 Days in WA" a state wide campaign to encourage our community to stop violence against women. We know that violence against women starts with gender equality underlined by unhealthy gender stereotypes. To prevent family violence we need to challenge unhealthy gender stereotypes. . Community, Respect & Equality #violenceisNEVERok #16DaysInWA and the answer to the questions is yes! https://www.communities.wa.gov.au/projects/16-days-in-wa/

15.01.2022 August LEAD session recap by participant Shermy : We started our awesome morning with inspiring speaker Dave Clare to challenge us thinking outside the box! We put our project into a business mode and brainstorming how to make our project stand out. Then we had a hands on volunteering experience at different sites, mine was Foodbank WA, others went to St Vinnies, Variety - the Children's Charity Midwest and the Child and Parent Centre - Rangeway. We got the job of unpacking... skin care products while chatting away with the manager. Time spent on the site had gone too quick and the amount of job still massive. To be able to go somewhere we won't normally go and do something we won't normally do, how this experience had broaden my mind! We spent the afternoon outside sitting in a circle preaching the wisdom of life balance from the wise old gentleman Rob Houwen from Geraldton Toyota, then finished with the leadership journeys of Angie and Todd West. Another session of LEAD done and just like the rest of it, I was packed in awe and so full of inspiration and new ideas. Really looking forward to our next catch up!

14.01.2022 Yesterday marked day two of the "Bike Rescue" project with Dismantle. The boys have been busy working away at perfecting their bikes. They've had to scrape off stickers and prep their bikes for spray painting, add the wheels onto the frames and connect their brakes and gears. These tasks require patience and everyone working together, to get the job done. Today (Friday) is the final day to finish off their bikes.
